display problems with puppy linux Subject description: no text in the middle of the screen - display driver missing???
I was considering installing puppy linux on an old machine to make it run better so I downloaded the latest slacko version and booted from a live CD with the iso on it.
Things were mostly fine EXCEPT one big thing - everything in the middle of the screen was displayed incorrectly. For example I'm clicking the menu button to start a program and everything there is empty but the very top items or I'm opening firefox and the text in the middle of the screen is missing. Pictures and colors are displayed correctly but text in the center portion of the display is missing. Then when I hover over the missing text and I try to select it, it sometimes magically appears but when I scroll a little it disappears again. Really strange...
I tried changing the display driver but X wouldn't start.
The video card is nvidia - maybe I need some specific driver for that?
I really want to be able to install puppy because I like it but this problem is stopping me for now.

This is a "known issue" with some nvidia graphics cards and the nouveau xorg driver.
Boot your Live CD and when you get the initial Puppy splash screen, (press F2 or start typing within 5 seconds) type:-
puppy pfix=ram noveau.noaccel=1
and press Enter. It should boot with all the graphics displaying properly
After you make a save-file you can go to Puppy Package Manager and install the proprietary nvidia driver (depending on which card you have but probably the legacy one and depending on which Slacko it is, PAE or 4g). _________________ Oscar in England
