I've been using Upup Raring 3.9.9.2 lately and I have only a few small
faults with it.

1) You should check the default applications. For instance I found that
'defaultaudiomixer' was missing  and an audiomixer
should be on the Start menu

2) Bulldog finder should be upgraded to the most recent since it
can open mo files and run scripts (if build_gettext and Run_in_Terminal
is installed)
Image

3)I have found a small bug in mhwaveedit in Raring. When I try to record with
mhwaveedit for the first time I get this error message if an audio file
is playing in the background (with pmusic )
at the same time. However with subsequent launches of mhwavedit it
will record with pmusic in background

Image

4) Also I can't get the capture source to be 'Mix' in Raring .
Here is picture in Precise which does show the capture source as 'Mix'
This means I can't record the sound from video files etc. so I have to
use Shinobar's ffconvert which can get the audio from video files.

to Pemasu:

Check that there is a configuration file (that makes the yellow
background color) found in

/root/.config/pclock/

not

/root/.config/puppyclock/

It's a long story why the file is called orange and produces the color yellow

Hi Don, is Imagination capable of creating a slideshow that can be viewed by someone who does not already have Imagination installed? (I think I have seen a program that does that by producing a swf output or similar...)
Hi greengeek,
This is what I have been using for some years. Then upload to http://megaswf.com (Site currently down which is unusual  )

Is this natively Linux-friendly?

The http://megaswf.com URL is blocked by opendns.com for some reason.

Hi edoc.

It is a windows package that I use with XP. Sorry, I should have pointed that out. The megaswf server is still not accessible. I can however ping the ip address (74.86.179.226) without packet loss. Given that ping returns the IP there is no point flushing your DNS cache.
Bottom line is “Try later

Upup v Precise

#307 Post by Barkingmad »

Hello

I was wandering what the main differences are between Upup and the "stock" Precise Puppy from Barry Ks download site. I think the kernel might be different but what else has been changed/improved?

Thanks for any pointers -- I've probably missed the list!!

Hmm...if we are speaking Upup Raring and Precise Puppy differences. Upup Raring uses Ubuntu Raring Ringtail packages. Precise Puppy uses Ubuntu Precise packages.
I have started with early Barry Kauler`s Raring Puppy project and continued then on my own. I have incorparated fixes from Barry`s later Ringtail woof build and then again continued on my own. I have updated several apps to use newer versions than Barry`s repositories offer. I have support to latest Zigberts applications versions like Pmusic and Pburn. Which has needed modifications that woof does not offer atm.

I have compiled my own kernel and included laptop tools to make my builds more laptop friendly. I have f2fs filesystem support.
I do use latest woof and fixes Barry and community offer for woof builds.
I have included Radky`s great PuppyApplications, several of them. And so on. In my builds is large Rox Right click support to enable many tasks to be launched from right click. Based on don570`s work.
I usually include more community created apps and scripts so that people`s work has place in distro. I swap them though quite a lot. So that menu would not be just jungle.

Barry has called my builds as enhanced versions of his woof builds. I think it describes my work quite well.

CUPS & Raring

#309 Post by edoc »

Should a computer loaded with Raring, and connected to the same network, automatically pick up networked printers?

Two such computers here are not seeing a networked printer.

I'm reluctant to force the issue via CUPS as I think that I was told that only one CUPS computer should be used for all CUPS-related administration.

Is that correct?

Or do I need to Add printer via CUPS on each computer - but there are certain settings that should only be changed on a single computer?

Thanks!

Edoc. Your questions go under CUPS usage.
I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean real network printer which is not attached to any computer or do you mean computer attached printer which you want to share for other computers for printing.

Also...you didnt tell the printer model. What driver does it use.
Anyway. You need to install or use right driver in the Upup Raring from which you print. Do you know what driver your printer should use.

I havent got yet any reports of working 3gmodem. Now I got stick which to test. Huawei 3gmodem works ok.
So....my usb-modeswitch-data-20130610 and usb-modeswitch-1.2.6 project is working one in 3.9.9.2.

The newer version has 297 modem chip versions info in /usr/share/usb-modeswitch data folder. 43 more than in the version in woof repository. It was time to update it.

Hi edoc !

foreword: - i did not yet experienced this with raring-3.9.9.X ... but well on wheezy-3.5.2.5.

here have 2 comps wire-ethernet-connected to and sharing the same printer connected to the so called computer#1;

to configure CUPS, both mut be running + working ethernet connection + printer ON (...trivial isn't ! :lol: );
do Menu/CUPS settings/Administration
and there i have the following boxes checked:
- V display shared printers with other systems
- V share printers connected to this sytem system
confirm by clicking on the button below «modify parameters» (this restart tne cups-server);

notes:
- comp#1 must be running + printer ON (...), with the above settings made; (i always switch ON the printer before starting the computer);
- sometimes it happens that computer#2 doesn't «see» the printer, especially if comp#2 has been booted after comp#1. To fix this just have whether restart comp#2, or manually restart cups-server on comp#2 by going to a console and typing

Code: Select all

# /etc/init.d/cups restart
- i also remember once i have had to reinstall the cups-server downloaded from PPM.

sorry if you are already aware of all this ...

hope this helps
charlie

Pemasu (a few posts back)

Thank you for that. It looks as though your aiming for a kind of "Puppy plus a bit".

I might stick a frugal install on and try it for a bit.

I am experiencing a problem with PupSnap - if I let it save to /root it works fine, but if I navigate to an external disk (eg either a usb stick or inbuilt HDD) and tell it to use that as the file destination it does not save the file. I'm guessing some sort of permissions problem?

mtPaint screen capture works fine.

(forgot to mention this is on a frugal install on usb stick)

EDIT :
I think this problem is actually caused by the fact that my destination contains a space in one of the directory names (eg: /mnt/sda2/Linux other/snaptest). If I change "Linux other" to "Linux_other" it seems to work (although on occasion it seems to lock up pupsnap with some display about x parameters or something then I have to close pupsnap and reopen it to get back to normal). I will post back with clarification if I see this again.

Hi greengeek,

PupSnap-2.2 supports (removes) spaces in filenames selected for captured images, but currently does not support spaces in directory names.

Thanks for your report.

EDIT: The upcoming PupSnap-2.2.1 will support spaces in directory names.

On one PC I have here 3992 boots up mostly black screen with some scattered icons.
This PC runs Slacko 5.5, Racy 5.5, and Raring 5.6.94 ok. It's a Dell Dimension 2350
having on-board Intel 8245 Brookdale-G hardware. The monitor is a Acer X191W LCD.

The behavior is weird. Vesa doesn't work either. I got a good startup GUI once and
thought a personal Save file and reboot would end the problem but it didn't.

The video driver problem surprised me since I was under the impression that this
sort of thing is ancient history, never to annoy users again when we try out the
latest and greatest pups :)

Artsown. Intel Brookdale is problematic. If you dont have any solution to provide, I dont know how to get it working. It would need succesful solution provided by some brookdale owner. Of course problem can be my compiled intel_drv.so and if so...you could try the ubuntu version from PPM.
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.21.6-0ubuntu4.1_i386.deb

You need to get intel_drv.so copied from the deb over existing intel_drv.so

Probably you will need to boot to the console state and do the job in console.
Hmm...nice little exercise. And I dont know if it will help.

@artsown:

Does a Raring 5.6.94 exist ?? :?

In any case, I have pretty much the same problem as you.

I guess this is the end of the "beautiful friendship" between single-core machines and Puppy.

I had the same misadventure with Puppy Precise 5.7.1 (regular edition) and Puppy Slacko 5.6_PAE : they boot with vesa 800x600 as the graphics driver, but they hang the disk if I try to go to console and launch the "xorgwizard".

the cause doesn't seem to be the glibc (or eglibc) version.
What I do not know is
  • is it my old NVidia card? or
the fact that this computer is single-core? or
if it's even possible to have a single-core computer and PAE?
I have replaced the old NVidia card with a slightly "younger" Radeon 9600 graphics card, but the change is not impressive.

In short, I'll have to find some big bucks to buy a new computer in order to keep up with the new Puppies.

Best regards.

pemasu, I decided to try the intel_drv..so file from Barry's Raring 5.6.94 since it has a
different file size than yours. It seems to be working OK. I re-booted several times
without problems. Both Hardware Info and Quick Setup show the Intel driver as
being used.
