school class with windows network

#1 Post by oui »

bonjour

we wish to add a (or more) new Puppy Linux PC in a class room network builded with windows compatible hardware. for your comprehension, the hardware is:

- ethernet LAN hub's for J45 connectors in cascade
(one main hubs with 6 connector places, one for the router,
connects 5 "level2 hubs" for untill 6 tables/users each)
- a combined internet-DSL-telefonbox-router

working now under windows in a TCP/IP network and using DHCP.

Under windows we use:

group name: BESTCLASS
computer name: DONKEY1..29 (actually 12) or TEACHER

we are sharing all the harddisk toghether and the printer of one of the PC's (it is not connected as a real network printer)

we work togheter using the conference mode of the yahoo messenger  (our flat rate makes it possible and the data flow is not so important!)

we can of course interchange files, audio files and pictures using the y! messenger but the sharing of all harddisk toghether is more easy and more fast and each participant knows that all people can read and access all contents of his disk so that he can't save dirty or other unplaisant files on his disk

the full sharing of the hard disk is part of an internal anti spams working!

what is to do to connect this one PC more in this configuration and preserve the full sharing (if possible also for the printer)

please, if you can help, answer here:

the empty page is prepared. only click twice or more and you can write there, where you actually the ................. 's.

thank you very much

salut

Maybe the subject of the thread is what didn't attract people.

You are talking about a windows network but reading your post it seems that you want a network of puppy computers.

I dont' think you really mean "Windows network". There may be windows servers and windows desktops, but the protocol and the hardware has nothing to do with Windows other than it may be supported by the OS

I think that is what's confusing.

If you want the Puppy computer to use other computers HDD, then you just need to either smbmount or to use LinNeighborhood to connect to the servers. See this thread: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?p=13074#13074

To use printers connected to the windows printers you may want to use CUPS on the windows computers to share the printer.

There is also a thread that includes the full Samba server for puppy. I think it's overkill but available if you need it. Just search for it on the Additional sofware forum.

Also a google search gave back this : http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-10.html

Hi rarsa

I thank you very much!

I will read your links exactly in a few days coming back because i will go tomorrow to the hospital for a bad operation for about a week minimal and would like to let my pages correctly in the wiki before that. But it don't seem to be possible any more.

It is really possible that the subject didn't attract people.

I am sorry but it is the real situation.

The hardware supplyers in our country (germany) never speaks from linux. if you buy a new hardware, the official situation is, that you, in the first time, have to build really a Microsoft Windows network! And if you encontre difficulties, you have a chance to get help and support from your supplyer.

If you say : "oh! all our computers run Puppy linux", you are alone...

In the praxis we have to use really and daily the ability of Microsoft Windows to build efficient networks in a few minutes to interchange big amounts of data from an harddisk to the other and to use only a printer. This printer as local printer can be a cheap no-name local windows printer (and the same would be possible with other equipments).

bye until about next week
