Is there something special about your DVDs? Nobody else has reported needing this additional codec pack.

They are Japanese Anime with english dubbing, (Fruits Basket (abc3 Australia) and Azumanga Daioh (think of a Japanese version of Dear Sir),) that is all. They worked out of the box first time with Wary55 when using Ogle so I don't know.

And I can confirm the requirements (at least for me) as I deleted the savefile and tried again from scratch and the same two steps were necessary.

1- delete the /etc/asound.conf :- to get gnome-mplayer to start. It complains of file corruption or an old version.

2- add the mplayer_codecs_basic2-20130718.pet to play the movie dvd's.

I also noticed that the sound volume and quality is less than Ogle gives, even when turned up and the configuration is set with larger A/V Buffer sizes. And no, nothing else was running.

I shall install and try rcrsn51's pet next and see if it's better otherwise I shall see if I can find an ogle pet and try that under precise retro

regards

That cluster of 9 MB's worth of ffmpeg / libav libs still appear to be duplicated in /usr/lib and /usr/lib/i686/cmov

I thought they had been removed or converted into symlinks during the size-reduction phase a little while back.

Hello broomdodger,

You couldn't find them?
Well, if you look in /usr/lib/i686/cmov you will see 7 real files and 7 symlinks.
The exact same 14 files are also present in /usr/lib

These are libs which are created when you compile ffmpeg or libav from source.

If they are in the .iso then there is nothing really to be gained for the user by removing them I don't think. It's just that I thought I read that they they had been removed by BarryK and I was wondering if they have been left there deliberately for some reason or have crept back in at some stage.

Any follow-up on this? Because Peasy DVD is just a front-end for MPlayer, I expect that it would also need the additional codec pack to play your Anime.

However, I would be interested in knowing how it plays standard Zone-4 DVDs made for the Australian market.

sorry rcrsn51, I installed it, but that was as far as I went, I will try it later today and report back.

I went back to my old puppy wary as I also found that both the subtitles doen't work with precise 571, PLUS it won't use Japanese language for voices, just English, even when set on in both places (config and running menu).

And as I reported, the maximum audio levels are half what wary55 has with an Intel HDA ALC888, so that is also a problem somewhere.

And as a request, I'd also be interested in seeing a L-R balance control appearing at some stage in the retrovol package, I know Ubuntu has it in their system so there must be something around.

EDIT1: decided to do it while I remembered too, went well except can't set the language to Japanese, just en, fr, es, does this mean anything to you? Is there (maybe) a language pack missing for mplayer? I can set Subtitles up though.

EDIT2:And while I'm at it, there is a codec file installed by default for gnome-mplayer, however it seems to be the wrong one as it's an old one. A later one is in the tree.

EDIT3: I've installed the ogle and ogle-gui from packages-wary5 and that works perfectly ok, so the problem must relate to gnome-mplayer somehow.

Puppy has had L-R balance for some time, but it is not in a menu that I know.

When the mixer is open, use 'F1' to learn how to do L-R balance, and more.

Create access to the mixer:
+ open file > my-applications
+ create a new text file
- right click and select New > Blank file
+ edit it by add the following
+ save as mixer (or what you like)
+ make it executable

#!/bin/sh
exec rxvt +sb -e alsamixer

I added the '-g' option because I like the size:

#!/bin/sh
exec rxvt +sb -g 141x31+0+23 -e alsamixer

Add it to the desktop and give it an icon!

Bill

PS here is one already made.

The Retrovol also has L-R control, but hidden.

+ right click on the volume in the tray
+ select Full Window
+ mouse over the 'Speaker' control
+ press 'shift' and scroll mouse wheel to change left
+ press 'control' and scroll mouse wheel to change right
+ without the 'shift' or 'ctrl' keys change both L and R
+ click in the bar to return to equal

Also works for Headphone, PCM, Mic Boost, Beep, Capture, really everything except Master Volume.

Are you talking about setting the language from the front-end screen or during playback?

From here:
Quote:
Click the Help button for instructions. Note the use of certain keys to control language and subtitles during playback.

From the Help:
Quote:
If your two-letter language code is not in the list, type it in the box and save your settings.

Hi all,

I am having a bit of an issue with xlock in Precise Puppy Retro running on my Pentium lll desktop... While I can set a screensaver and password and get it working, sometimes when I return to computer after an undetermined but considerable length of time, I find the screensaver is stuck and the system is frozen. I end up doing a hard shutdown and start-up to get myself going again.

I looked at xerrs.log and found the following:
Code:
xlock:  bad command line option "-mode"

This suggests to me that there is something wrong with the call that brings up the screensaver --which in my case happens to be: spiral but I don't know if that matters, as I haven't tested the other screensavers yet.

This issue happens frequently but intermittently, so I am finding it difficult to zero in on exactly what is going on here. I have not experienced this problem with Wary Puppy.

Monsie
