A Puppy Linux 3.01 - Unoffical Service Pack

#1 Post by darry1966 »

Hello my fellow Puppyians,

I have been playin around with Puppy Linux 3.01 to see what I can do with it.

At my Sourceforge 3.01 Update website listed there are updates some from Pup4
that work with Puppy Linux including Xorg Full 7.3 anyway if you're a 3.01 fan fill your boots. Added SDL libraries from Debian to give great support to games and Debian Squeeze version of GTKam.

You can now get updates directly here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/puppyli ... rce=navbar - No passwords Usernames required.

New Games added and also updated dbus libaries namely dbus and dbus-glib from Quirky.

Added GTKDialog4 from Wary which is required for updates as I had left this out when I transferred files from old site. Instructions below revised...

First Updates to do
glib-2.22.2-p4.pet, glibc-2.10.1.pet, glibc_locales-2.10.1.pet, gcc-4.2.2-1.pet, gtkdialog4-246-w5.pet, libjpeg-7-w5c.pet,libjpeg8_8d-1_i386.pet, libtiff4_3.9.4-5+squeeze8_i386.pet, libstdc++6_4.4.5-8_i386.pet

It is wise to reboot before continuing.

Xorg 7.3 Upgrade..Optional see.....

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88540

I have made a wiki with Instructions at the sourceforge site.

Mplayer added - 15-12-13

What I installed For Basic Upgrade

#2 Post by darry1966 »

Glib-2.22.2-p4 - Puppy Linux 4, Gtkdialog4-246-W5, Glibc-2.10.1, Glibc-locales-2.10.1, gcc-4.2.2-1, Shinobar's FFmpeg-20100408-0.9, libstdc++6_4.4.5-8_i386, Shinobar's Xine-lib-1.1.19-p4-Full and some other minor as required puppy 4 pets.

The Glibc updates seem to be highest possible.

Steps I used

1. Installed Glib-2.22.2 from Puppy Linux 4 repos
2. Installed Glibc 2.10 and Glibc locales 2.10
3. GTKDialog 4 and GCC-4.2.2-1
reboot

Installed the other updates above.

You don't need a google drive account you just go to the google.com web page - the same as if you were doing a search there click on google drive in the area where it says email type anitaos1964

Password : anitaos64 once logged in left click on anitaos and scroll down to the 3.01 folder click on it and you're in and download and add files as you wish. Again you don't need an account I am giving people carte blanche access to that account for the community.

Are the core updates mainly to support gtkdialog4 as that cause a major headache with barrys softmaker pet?
As a not irregular 4.12 user I still seem to run the same core as it came with ..gtk 2.12, glibc 2.61 etc.

I did it as an exercise to see what could be done with 3.01. It enables me to use latest seamonkey and run a bit more modern software.

However I like running some of the Gtk stuff as well.

I like compiling from Slackware too.

I have downloaded your modified Gtkdialog 4 and I am using it thanks Mike available here

I did a test and gtkdialog4 does need some functions only in gtk 2.12 and newer ... just for reference.
My fix only changes a deprecated function name so does not seem to affect functionality.

keeping our old and not so old hardware flying

For Puppy Linux 4.12 only

Here is the GTKdialog4 from Wary modified with your GTKdialog4 file inside replacing the original. I used Big Bass's Unzipper drag'n'drop tool from Slaxerpup, to unzip the original pet and drop your new file inside then used dir2pet right click from Stu90 to make it a pet again.

At my Google Drive site and Aitaos Sourcforge site I have kept both versions of GTKdialog 4 so users for Puppy 4.12can choose I didn't have issues with the original.

For 3.01 I will stick with the original
With my updates for Puppy Linux 3.01 I stuck with original gtk to update requires using an updated cairo and jasper pets from wary Puppy, I try to keep system as original as possible.

Updating to gtk from Puppy 4 involves new updated cairo and it should be known it breaks puppy 3's Puppy sound mixer so just stick to original unless you are adventurous and want to use SGmixer instead.

So I have provided basic updates trying not to break any old apps that came with original pup3 that people may still want to run.

The standard network/wireless wizards from 4 should drop in too ...I even used them in slax. Puppy 2/3 has similar structure but the wifi side was incomplete at the time thats all.

Well system to match the hardware makes sense. I have no reason really to change from my slax 6/puppy 4/ windows 2000 on the machines have. I also see too many bugs in the recent releases and I cannot be bothered to spend the time debugging them for probably little gain.
