OCI (one click installer)

Posted: Sun 29 Sep 2013, 10:14
by ASRI éducation
The OCI (one click installer) utility provides users with an easy method to install the operating system on the primary drive (sda) of their computer.
One click to format/erase the primary hard drive and start the installation, then you take a walk and make you run a cafe. When you return, it remains only to click a second time to restart the computer.

The simplified installation method does not replace the traditional method (puppyinstaller), but in many cases it allows a novice user or pressed, install the operating system without having to worry about the steps required by puppyinstaller: gparted , grub, etc.

Important!
  1. It is strongly recommended to read the help before using the OCI utility.
  2. The simplified installation proposed by OCI must be activated from a media liveUSB (vfat) or liveCD/DVD (iso9660) used with pupmode=5 (first use without backup).
  3. The simplified installation allows you to install the operating system on the primary hard drive of the computer (sda), no other host support is possible.
  4. The simplified installation formats/erases automatically the different partitions of the main hard drive (sda) of the computer. So you must save the files (available on the main hard drive sda) you want to keep before you start easy installation!
  5. The simplified installation does not affect the additional hard drives: sdb, etc.
  6. Users wishing to benefit from a complete selection of options (multiboot, encryption, etc.) must use traditional method "puppyinstaller" (/usr/sbin/puppyinstaller).

Notes
  1. For ASRI Edu 300 et Puppy Lucid 52x it is necessary to install a dependency gettext-base_0.17.
  2. OCI is based on scripts of rcrsn51, cf. How to do a One-Click Installation of Puppy.
  3. A discussion exists for French-speaking users, cf. OCI (one click installer) - Utilisateurs francophones.

Improvements planned for future releases
  1. Create two partitions on the hard drive host (sda), one for the OS and one for data.
  2. Allow extra frugal installations without overwriting the hard drive host (sda) to add other versions of Puppy without overwriting the existing installation.
  3. Improve conditional display of the main GUI: swap file size and pupsave according to size available on the host hard drive, display pupsave information only if frugal installation is selected.

Some small bugs to report (obviously you can help me to solve):
  1. The installation "silent" pollutes "config" file, then with the installation "talkative" everything is ok.
  2. With Precise Puppy 5.7.1, the creation of the pupsave file causes an error at the first reboot. To find the desktop icons and menu, you must write in console "gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache" and restart the X server
  3. The simplified help is written in gtk (with notebook option). When starting, the first tab is not the correct size.
Cordialement,
Unfortunately i can't help with development/coding but i'd be happy to help you with the Greek translation any time you want!

Unless I am mistaken, no tester in the English forum ...
Shame, because OCI seems to be an interesting utility.

I guess many users do not have this liberty with their hard disk - that can explain the "no tester" that you observed. :)

You're right.
OCI is intended for novice users or pressed.
Obviously, on this forum I deal with experts who perform manual installations (without using the puppyinstaller).

i don't foresee wanting to erase any of my hard drives, but if you could mod it to allow the user to select a particular partition for installation, i'd conceivably give it a go.

seems like a cool program, but it also seems a bit unnecessarily destructive.

I'd like to know how to do it, but actually it is not possible for me.
Especially because of the automatic configuration of Grub.
However, I can find a possible solution...
