Just curious about Puppy's parents

#1 Post by tropicalretriever »

I am new to Puppy, and was wondering if it will always be based on Ubuntu. I know there is a Slackware variant, but the main distro seems to be Ubuntu based.

Thanks.

There is no such thing as the "main Puppy distro".

There is no such thing as "always".

Pick the Puppy that works with your hardware, has the features you like and has lots of community support.

Hello, tropicalretriever.

If you're talking about Puppy's genealogy, Barry Kauler usually bases his "pure" Puppies on files from the "T2" depot.

Rumor has it that AmigoLinux is great-great-great-grand-father of Puppy. Whether that is
true or not, I do not know. But it would be nice to have an informed reply from someone.

Puppy versions are built using Woof Builder.

Here is background info on Woof.

The latest Puppy version by Barry (Precise Puppy) is based on Ubuntu packages.
The next one could be something else.

Slacko Puppy is another version, based on Slackware packages.

Developers choice.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Thank you all for your replies! I really appreciate it. I have used Ubuntu, Mint, Slackware derivatives, Mageia, Fedora, and a few others. I have been wanting to download Puppy for awhile, so I'll give it a try.

Thanks again!
