thirty gigs of stuff...

#1 Post by Puppus Dogfellow »

EDIT 3/2/15: new, more accurate title reflects growth; this is the thread formerly known as

three and a half gigs of stuff...
my attempt at putting together a repository

_____________

EDIT 5/25/14: think it's time for a better table of contents. the original post sits below the three asterisks, but it will eventually be altered so that some of the list becomes direct links to progs i think may be of particular interest or are particularly nifty. unless replaced by improved/updated versions, all are contained within the following folders regardless:

pupli repo home

audio, graphics, video, studio, QT

browsers, network, internet, games

desktop

file managers and viewers

puppy isos

Utilities Tools System Libs

Wine/JRE/JDK/Python/Virtual Box/Java

word processing and related

some of the new direct links will be anachronistic to the original post date, and the day may come when this post has more edits than the thread has posts, so i figure that's another reason this is worth mentioning. thank you to all the contributors--i will continue to try to credit those i can (i started amassing pets and sfs files before i realized i'd be using them for this) and those i as yet haven't.

also, the repo's probably closer to 25 gig than ten at this point. (three and a half has long since passed)

***

here's a link to my attempt at making a repository. most of the stuff comes from this forum in one way or another, but maybe someone will find it useful.

the pets, sfs, etc have been used in Slacko 5.3.1. to Precise 5.7.1., this stash weighted more heavily towards the latter, i guess. i'll update it as time goes on, paying attention to Libre Office in particular (impossible for me without the scripts of 01micko, don570, RSH, and numerous others--the collection totals nearly three and a half gigabytes as of this writing). i also intend to mirror the latest stable and stablish wines from greendome....

the latest chrome and firefox as well, though one of my computers (HP laptop running precise 5.5 off a partitioned SD card) has been updating FF pretty well on its own since 16.02...

disclaimer: not everything was used/tested--some stuff was just downloaded because it seemed cool or useful. as far as what ended up getting installed, the collection's pretty griefless.

(lest anyone think i'm terribly computer literate, the above hyperlink now represents my fourth attempt at getting one to show...)

Hello, Puppus Dogfellow.

What a great initiative! And congratulations for your patience in setting this up!
I'm sure that many Puppyists will find this quite useful. I've put the URL in my bookmarks.
It might also double-up as an unofficial back-up for the files on this forum.

Best wishes of success and "good continuation" !

I wonder if this would be a good collection to merge/collaborate with this project:

3.5 g's lol, noob. I never delete my puppy pets, either, when I shuddered Puptrix.org all those custom iso's and pets hosted just filled one DVD. I'm now burning bluray disks to store puppy related distros about 5 to 8 BR-discs every other month.

I like the archive sight above, get with the guy who's full time volunteer Job is to save puppylinux world from disappearing if John Murga (AKA John Galt) does.

I have finished uploading ISOs to the archive and am now starting on pets, sfs and devx's

unfortunately I was unable to have a second login but anybody can upload to the archive after you've registered

upload to the generic archive, contact the admin and they will transfer over

please do you're best to add legitimate files to their respective folders (ie puppy 4 stuff only in puppy 4) etc. etc.

ted dog, I was unable to download devx's at the start of my campaign due to available drive space and bandwidth, I would be interested in any you can add (ISOs too)

happy to pay for discs and postage to the uk

ally :)

Yes, cut paste a list of what your missing or I'll just start mailing you stuff. I have a tall spindle of mini-dvds, which can be sent in regular letter mail to cut cost. Also, do not worry about cost, I think you are doing an extreme service to the community and I've got so much old puppy stuff (DVDs) that I could finally part with to clean up storage space. Do You have a bluray reader/burner?

Bummer Blu-rays hold 5x DVD and cost the same per disc in bulk, at the same shipping cost but the cost per Gig is less than 10cents, and have better burn success due to hardware track rewriting failures during burns, also about 4 to 6 times faster to read and write as data.

May need to PM me your public Amazon UK wishlist link

Ted Dog wrote:3.5 g's lol, noob. I never delete my puppy pets, either, when I shuddered Puptrix.org all those custom iso's and pets hosted just filled one DVD. I'm now burning bluray disks to store puppy related distros about 5 to 8 BR-discs every other month.

I like the archive sight above, get with the guy who's full time volunteer Job is to save puppylinux world from disappearing if John Murga (AKA John Galt) does.
i'll spare anyone from even having to look at my bloated remasters.

as for merging the two, i think my entire archive (regardless of how big it grows?) can be downloaded as a single gz file from google, so if you want, you're welcome to it.

yeah, i think categorization of the stuff (and grouping dependencies with their originals, or just making a pet of it and saying what's inside) would be helpful, and maybe one day i will, but i put it here and in this way so it would show up in forum searches and people would have access to it if the other links were down (actually got the idea from reading a post about a lost kde sfs file--i had most of this stuff dropboxed so i could have it for all my computers conveniently.)

for what it's worth, i started using puppy a few years ago (brain's fried--maybe this will be more accurate:) with slacko 5.3.1. not long after 5.3.3 came out (was never very on top of things). i have no idea what would work on the 4 series and below, but i tried to take stuff from "common" and similarly named sources (that's how i interpreted "no arch") when i could. ted's right--i'm a complete noob, but it seems to me puppy will just continue to develop into this hyper efficient way to use good software from just about every linux family--that the word? pretty sure i don't mean "distro"...

but yeah, it's a disorganized mess i suppose. my biggest complaint is i didn't include file sizes.

i like how shinobar's repository is set up....that plus the explanations of what the stuff does and how to do it is pretty much this forum--no interest in competing with it, just offering/safeguarding some stuff i thought was cool and useful, which much of it proved to be.

tell you what i'm missing though--i'd like some sort of .sfs package that allows puppy to outdo those ubuntu studio things--if i ever make a remaster for public consumption, i'd like it to be able to rescue the nyc education system (and others). i think music can help. (contributed the LO and will praise xpad, have learned to love geaney, graphics programs galore...they have machines rotting in the backs of classrooms...)...

anyway, google downloads much faster than ibiblio. for me anyway.

Your project will certainly acquire you the title of "Puppy's Monk-in-Chief"!
Naah... "Abbott Puppus" sounds better!
