The echinus window manager now has a central thread -- here!

#1 Post by musher0 »

Good morning, everyone!

Member jplt has been bugging me (in a very polite way, I must say)
about creating an echinus thread under this heading because he feels
that this excellent wm really deserves having its own rallying point on
the Puppy forum.

And he's right, there are echinus threads scattered all over this place!
Project threads, in English:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47476 (mine)
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 49&t=47966 (aragon's)

Config thread, in French:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90034 (config)
Note: anglophone threads above also explain the echinus configuration.

The most recent version of echinus, v. 0.4.9 can be downloaded from:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#731167
There's a screenshot here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#731168

darkcity has made room for echinus on the Puppy wikka:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Echinus Thanks, darkcity.

Outside of this forum:
The source code:

The "git" for echinus: https://github.com/polachok/echinus
The author's page: http://plhk.ru/

A few blogs and articles about echinus:
in English:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 18#p205418 (review on a crunchbang thread)
http://linuxbbq.org/wiki/index.php?title=Echinus (on a LinuxBBQ thread)

in French:
http://geekfault.org/2009/08/19/echinus-wm/

If you'd be kind enough to report below anything concerning echinus
on Puppy, and let's play on words a bit, any of your concerns about
echinus and your use of it. This can and should include any utilities,
menus, panels, etc., that work well with the echinus window manager.

So let's try to keep everything echinus in one place.
jplt, and echinus lovers generally, will love you for it! ;)

;) Voilà, jplt, it's done! :D Have a great day, everyone!

Hello all.

A new member of the forum was looking possibly for an alternative window manager, so
I thought it might be appropriate to bring this thread back in the loop.

Echinus is not easy. Needs training.
However my answer will give it a chance to please people by getting again at the top of the desktop section.
Nota : i tried it with a Puppy where Echinus was included. I will test again with a stable Puppy, released a long time ago.

Hello all.

This post simply to bring the echinus WM back into collective focus.

I was viewing a couple of videos about the awesome window manager on
youtube the other day, and it struck me that echinus has almost identical
capacities as awesome -- without the extra complication of having to learn
the lua language to configure it, since the echinus configuration file is in
plain text format.

In short, IMO, the echinus WM has nothing to envy to the awesome WM;
echinus is right up there at the top of the list with the best WM's available
for and on Linux.

Considering that the echinus window manager allows floating windows as
well as tiling windows (please see attached screen capture), this excellent
window manager should be much more popular than it is.

Used here in combination with xcompmgr, echinus displays shadows and
transparency. It also shows one floating window on top of four tiled windows.
At bottom we have the bmpanel2 traybar.

Hello all.
Most Important: Please back-up your current
/root/.echinus directory before installing this pet.
Please find attached a pet archive containing 37 themes for the
echinus WM, plus illustrations of a few, and some reference material.

How-to:
-- back-up your current echinus configuration
-- install the attached pet

-- open a terminal
-- cd to /root/.echinus
-- type

Code: Select all

./ChooseTheme.sh
-- type in your choice (no typos allowed, sorry)

-- X recycles the echinus WM with the new theme.

Constructive, improvement-focused feedback is always welcome.

Most of the these themes were inspired by the color palettes on this page:
https://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_palettes.asp

~~~~~~~~~~
Also included is a panel to help memorize the key bindings in echinus.
From terminal or otherwise, activate
Code: Select all
Combinaisons.sh
in the /root/.echinus directory to view them.
~~~~~~~~~~

IHTH foster the interest in this excellent WM.

Please read this commented tree of the attached pet archive. It may
answer some questions. TIA.

Hello all.

There is a new package for echinus, compiled for and on xenialPup32:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... ost#972425

In the same thread you will find a pet package for the bmpanel2 traybar and panel.
