RE the comment that Lucid is one of the most popular versions - why is this?

It's popular because it ROCKS!...

And did I recently mention that playdayz ROCKS!!??... Very Happy

Seriously, thank you to all of our great Devs!...

My observation is that Lucid is lighter hardware load than 4.31/4.32. It also has better stability, and better hardware support -- I don't think that I've run across anything "newer" that it didn't work on. **Newer being machines from the last decade -- my newest desktop is from 2005 (though I did recently buy a "new" Win7 laptop). 5.28 also runs fine on my older desktop. And 5.25 Retro runs on my really old 333 MHz PII laptop (though I recently rolled it back to 4.12 Retro -- the newer versions are just a bit "heavy" for it, once you open a browser).

Looking at my user "pile" (machines which are actively used), all 5 are running 5.28 (all dual boot - 1 with Win98--my main desktop, 3 XP, 1 Win7). My old 333MHz test bed is Win98/4.12 Retro/5.25 Retro. And I almost exclusively use 5.28 it on my Win7 machine (running on a SD card in the side) -- just don't think it's a good idea to give Windows too much access to the internet...

I was given an old "junk" laptop that I'm thinking about putting into service. No HDD (and they tossed the adapter/carrier for the HDD), and it has some keys missing, but it's fairly fast and has 1GB RAM... Maybe I'll swap it in for this tower I'm running -- probably use less power... But then I won't have access to my 5.25" floppy drive... Wink Laughing Laughing Laughing (hey, I am a retro tech guy!... I recently started going through my old disks, dumping them on a HDD - still got a couple shoe boxes of 5.25" to go through...)

What if people are like me? Smile

Nope that is not the answer
I am a rather odd user of Puppy.

But it is a known fact that

"If it aint broken why fix it"
so people that got Lucid/Lupu
working for them feel no need
to test another one like Slacko
or FatDog unless Lupu fail to boot
on a UEFI machine and FatDog actually
give instruction on how to boot their OS

I just tested it on an Asus-701 and all appears to work including the somewhat mysterious wireless network of the 701. I was able to google just fine with it.

Next comes loading it up with my favorite programs.

rerwin,

The links in the first post need to be updated to reflect the latest version download.
Example:
Lupu is now 20131215 not 20131120

Could use a little more information about the different versions of Lupusuper.
Like what is 1, 2, and 3?

Thanks again, for all the work you have done to update Lucid!!!!

just curious - lupu3hd I downloaded on 11/24/13 was 169mb according to my notes. copy d/l today dated 12/17/13 is only 148 mb. Did size change that much or did I write down wrong size on earlier version?

Thanks

Done. Thanks for the reminder.

Later: majorfoo,
Not to worry. You will notice that the luci_001 file is about the same size. The older ISO contains a 22MB z-drive file file even though the remaster was done without making a zdrv. I found that remasterpup2 always copies the zdrv from its original puppy (CD or iso) but deletes it if it makes a new one, but not otherwise! I have deleted that copying in remasterpup2 in the latter lupu3hd, which was used to build it.

Hi Rerwin,

There's a fellow who is fighting with a wimax card... I'm out of my depth on the issue (not an obvious simple problem...). Perhaps you can take a look, and/or point him to someone who can help.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90765

Not sure if the card is one supported by 5.28 or not... Or if he has some other "handshaking" or "authentication" issue...

Edit: Reported as SOLVED... Thanks to those who jumped in!

Atle wrote:
Video will not play on Mplayer. Just says "stopped"
I found this in playdayz's initial page for lucid pup 5.2.8:
Quote:
Possible Issue: If you have no video in gnome-mplayer please click the play icon on the desktop to open gnome-mplayer, then choose Edit -> Preferences, click the drop-down Video Output menu, and change to x11 (from xv). The video is set to xv by default because 1) it has higher quality, and 2) the DVD menus work better.
After encountering the same behavior, I made the change he recommended. My .mov video now plays as one would expect.

So, that is the first thing to try.

PostPosted: Mon 23 Dec 2013, 15:22    Post subject: monitor problem

Yesterday I got a Dell Latitude E6410.

The recent lupu3hd lets me see the screen OK on an external monitor, but the laptop's built-in monitor does not show the system tray at the bottom.

When I unplug the external monitor, and reboot, the laptops's own screen works fine.

Any advice, please?

Thank you.

Sheldon Isaac

Team,

Good stuff, It's nice to see this linage maintained. From what I gather, it's a smaller code base thus runs a bit quick than the Precise distro. Are there any other advantages over Precise?

Maybe both monitors are trying to use the same resolution. The resolution set for the external monitor. Probably being bigger than the laptop monitor, the external monitor resolution would be wrong for the laptop monitor.

The specs for this computer say it has a Nvidia graphics controller. Using a Nvidia graphics driver should give you better options for duel monitor.
Nvidia has its X-sever settings program, with monitor setting options.

For the hardware in this computer, (cutting edge for Puppy), you may get better results using Slacko 5.6.

to all of you but inspired by post by backi
here above my post.

I should not write at all my brain is becoming old
and not really reliable.

But I do vaguely remember that the only Puppy OS
that promised to be able to do Suspend and Resume
where the one built for ASUS EEEPC 700

Have any other developer promised Suspend
and Sleep and to get back from these without problem.

Maybe I have not paid attention of some other Puppy OS has it?

If I am wrong then I would be very happy to be corrected
because I would love to suspend and resume or
to go to sleep and then to wake up the computer reliably

Maybe it has to do with code for ACPI and such may be proprietary

Has anyone already done this?
If not, I plan to code this up in the new year:

With gphotofs, we can extend the current icons appearing for memory sticks to make an icon appear when a camera is plugged in that works a lot like you plugged in a memory stick. The icon will appear and can be clicked on to mount the camera and make the directory appear. To the user it would then look like puppy just knows the camera as a file system and no special software or special GUI is needed.
