I install in lucid puppy Sylpheed 3.4.1 by shinobar as a pet package (I remember some malfunctions when installed as sfs). I do not use GNUpg. In order to use encryption I would use gpg4usb.

Thanks for that info, watchdog.

Since lupu already has gnupg (and gpgme), I decided to try sylpheed 3.4.1 with the lucid repo version of GNUpg and its dependencies. I made .pets from the .deb files and installed them with sylpheed 3.4.1. I had made a .pet from shinobar's .sfs file of sylpheed-3.4.1.

Sylpheed started OK and did not complain about GNUpg. And no error messages appeared in xerrs.log. That is as far as I went, because I did not want to set up a mail account.

I notice that GNUpg version 2 installs as "gpg2" instead of gpg, which remains as version 1.4. Does sylpheed use gpg2 if it is there, or should there be a link to gpg2 from gpg?

Could someone more familiar with sylpheed than I am try 3.4.1 and gpg2? Here are the links to them:Richard

It does not work for me. I exported my public and private keys of my two email account for testing in gpg4usb and imported them in gpg in lucid after installing your packages. Sylpheed 3.4.1 fails decryption and crashes with no error output because of a symbol lookup error about libgpgme.so.11. But if you encrypt a message in gpg4usb and copy it in a email you are able to decrypt it in gpg4usb again by copying and pasting. I stick with gpg4usb: I have it in /mnt/home and works in every puppy.

https://www.gpg4usb.org/

It now also has the 64 bit linux portable starter.

watchdog,

Thanks for testing the new packages. To try to resolve the symbol lookup error, I downloaded the libgpgme .deb, trimmed it and made it into a .pet, as before. It is now added to the set of packages in my previous message.

Please install it to see whether it helps.

Success! It works. A symlink was needed:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/bin/pinentry-gtk-2 /usr/bin/pinentry
The symlink:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/bin/gpg2 /usr/bin/gpg
seems to be also needed.

watchdog,
Thanks for the test, again. So, I can add those packages and links to the next release. Whew! Thank you for helping me with this.

Lucid Pup 2017 release beta available

#907 Post by rerwin »

I have assembled the next version of 5.2.8.7 for 2017. This might be the final release of Lucid Pup unless something major can be fixed in Lupu. I am offering beta versions of the release (lupu & sulu2 only, so far), so that we can refine the release if necessary. Please check to be sure it still does what you need it to do for you.

The 2017 release disk images are here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?5il6yef4h3sdj

The main upgrades are:
  • - Network connection upgrade for changing among Simple Network Setup, Network Wizard and Frisbee (but not PeasyWiFi).
    - Seamonkey 2.48 supported, using watchdog's technique with glibc 2.19.
    - Sylpheed upgraded to version 3.4.1, from shinobar.
    - Palemoon browser installer added, giving Palemoon as an alternate to Seamonkey.

    - Latest version of openssl, from belham2.

    - /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit - extend wait for usb mouse in CD boot-up
    - /usr/sbin/remaster_package_check - correct PET conflict detection (20171007)
Notes:
  • Seamonkey browser/mail: Version 2.46 is the last that will run in Lucid Pup without the glibc 2.19 support package. Version 2.48 generally works but sometime distorts menu lists, slanting them and making them difficult or impossible to navigate. I do not know how to fix that, so welcome any advice on that. I had to revert to 2.46 because I was unable to manage my email due to that persistent distortion.

    Palemoon browser: This is activated with the Palemoon Installer (menu > Internet > Palemoon installer), not through the 'browse' desktop icon. Once activated, though, the icon will start Palemoon as the default browser.

    Sylpheed mail: This was upgraded as a possible substitute for Seamonkey mail, in case that becomes unusable. (Needs testing by sylpheed users.)

    Network Connection Upgrade: This straightens out the details of switching among the three network managers and allows use of a manager different from the default (and back), without confusing the connect wizardry.

    Wifi/wireless CRDA: This can ensure that wifi modem operations comply with regulations in the country of operation. This relates to constraints on channel availability (1-11 vs. 1-4, etc) and transmission power. This is useful in countries where channels 12-14 are legal. By default, only channels 1-11 are allowed.
As usual, please report any problems with this release, so I might fix them. Thanks go to watchdog and sindi for their help in troubleshooting seamonkey and sylpheed and the network connection improvements.
Richard

New frugal install in savefolder of lupu-5.2.8.7-20170923-beta. Many thanks, rerwin. No problems with my usual install using palemoon and sylpheed. All working well until this moment. I have to report the slow first starting of PPM because of the slowness of populating the /tmp files (I made a script in /root/Startup to copy them). I have also found an odd behaviour of /usr/sbin/fixmenus because of support for other windows managers which throws errors which also interfere with jwm (with the original fixmenus one my menu item does not start saying "operation not permitted" but it does in console). I have deactivated them in fixmenus:

Code: Select all

#w001 support for fbpanel, lxpanel, openbox, fluxbox, pekwm...
#[ `which variconlinks` ] && variconlinks #100404 for my fbpanel pkg.
#[ `which tempicons` ] && tempicons
#[ `which fbpanel_menu_refresh` ] && fbpanel_menu_refresh
#[ `which lxpanel_menu_refresh` ] && lxpanel_menu_refresh
#[ `which jwm2fluxbox` ] && jwm2fluxbox  ##current fluxbox_menu_refresh doesn't support menu icons while this does
#[ `which obmenu-refresh` ] && obmenu-refresh
#[ `which jwm2pekwm` ] && jwm2pekwm
(errors about fbpanel and openbox).

Sometimes the booting of a savefolder in ext4 partition freezes at "Loading extra sfs...". After hard reset at next boot lucid updates again layers ("layers have changed").

EDIT: this problem is also affecting the booting of a lupusave.2fs file in ext4 partition on my hardware.

Thank you.

I've not been able to boot it on this Dell E6410.

Most recently, I have put the files on an ext3 partition

Code: Select all

/mnt/sda2> ls -l vmlinuz initrd.gz  lupu_528.sfs
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root   1922867 Sep 23 16:16 initrd.gz
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 198594592 Sep 23 16:16 lupu_528.sfs
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root   2228976 Sep 23 16:16 vmlinuz
and did a grub4dosconfig which resulted in this in menu.lst

Code: Select all

title Lupu 528 (sda2)
  uuid 4bdf9ac9-3f53-484c-b768-a129c2671ff6
  kernel /vmlinuz  pmedia=atahd  pfix=fsck
  initrd /initrd.gz
Please help me with getting this new LuPu to boot.

Thanks again,
Sheldon

Hi Rerwin,

Just wanted to give you feedback on this latest release. Mostly all good. Only two issues I can find after using it all weekend and again tonight: redshiftgui loads and runs, but nothing happens (I'll later find the problem with this easily, not a big deal right now) and, second, on this core i3 laptop that I 'frugal' installed lupu too, it cannot find any sound. I know the sound works as many other pups have used this laptop. It's a bit of a problem, but I am not sure what to do to fix it. Thought I'd ask you first before I go rooting around trying my fixes. Also, I will flop this 'frugal' install over to my P4 machine tomorrow and see if the sound (and redshift) problems appear there.

As a side note, I'm sure gonna hate to this lupu end. Why? Simple: it still runs great and I can see your hard work and touches everywhere. It's nice to see a pup creator/ maintainer be like this. You've done great with this, Richard, and deserve credit :wink: . Anyhow, here's some pics, the titles explain them, Palemoon installed from the Menu script so fast I couldn't believe it, and the pop-up boxes for everything that you do in Lupu, like I said, your touches & attention to detail are everywhere:

Hi belham, maybe helps what rerwin wrote here (try other mode in settings):

So, this monitor responds only to VidMode.

Hi Fred,

That was the first thing I tried. No luck. Also, this laptop (running all the other pups and ddogs) has no problem with redshiftgui. I just gotta figure out what changed from the the previous lupu version to this latest lupu version, and then I'll know what's happened. I've a feeling a few dependencies are missing, or it is something to do with the xorg used in this latest lupu, which (if so) means no fun at all, haha, trying to fix it. :wink:

belham2,
Thank you for your good feedback and kind comments about my efforts. I am not planning to abandon lupu, but it is getting harder to keep up with browsers for it. (I depend on watchdog to deal with their challenges.) I suspect that more and more people will feel they should move on from lupu because of security concerns, although I assume there are uses where that is not important.

Regarding redshiftGUI, I look forward to hearing the results of your attempt to get it working. I am surprised that none of the backends work on the laptop, but don't know what to do about it.

Regarding the sound card, if you give us the details about it and the driver that works for it in other pups (wary? precise? racy?), I could look into maybe finding or compiling a version for lupu if there is no other solution.

Does it work if you replace
uuid 4bdf9ac9-3f53-484c-b768-a129c2671ff6
with
rootnoverify (hd0,1)

Also, try the newer version of grub4dos (grub4dos-0.4.4.v1.9.2) which supports grub2, available from shinobar:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 995#384995

I plan to add that to the next release.

No, Richard. It still did the red "pausing" near the beginning of the boot sequence, then proceeded all/most of the way, before hanging, with two indicator lights flashing in the strip above the keyboard.

But I apologize for a blunder!

I just now copied the 3 essential files to an ext4 partition on an older computer, the Dell Mini 9, with BIOS A06 of 12/29/2009. On that computer, it booted normally with the rootnoverify. I think it'd work OK also with a menu.lst produced by grub4dosconfig.

I kind-of vaguely recall a similar problem a few years ago; maybe it was that LuPu did not boot on this Dell E6410 with BIOS A11. But SuLu does.

Oh, is it perhaps something related to video? Maybe I should try with booting nox, and then try xvesa?

UPDATE: Yes, that worked, in this Dell E6410. I'm on now with Dillo.
How could I arrange to use something other than xvesa? And what is supposedly the reason why xvesa is "not as good" as the video produced by xorg? Please excuse my ignorance.

Thank you,
Sheldon

Hi Richard ! :)

Tons of thanks for this revitalization !

1. The latest at now iso lupu-5.2.8.7-20170923-beta.iso runs OOTB here on an HP 2530p elitebook 2nd hand bought.
I'll look for installing gnumeric 1.10.17 (don't know if it could be ever possible).

report video reports:
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Lucid , version 528

Chip description:

Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Actual rendering on monitor:
Resolution: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)
Depth: 24 planes

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
#
2. I also got a try on lupusuper4 lupusuper4-5.2.8.7-k3.9.9-20161228.iso on the same laptop: X fails to start automatically; only the vesa driver works (manually selected when launching xorgwizard when prompted - there are one or two posts in this thread reporting the same issue with lupusuper4 installed on another laptop Dell 620).
On the other hand, I have Pemasu's upup-raring-3.9.9.2 still running on these very same laptop using the intel driver (I plan to copy its intel video driver onto lupusuper4 to see what happens...)

Best regards, Charlie
