I am using Netgear 16-bit PCMCIA MA401 wireless card. Works well, but wonder why I have to configure it every time I start the laptop. I do not have to reconfigure the ethernet port at startup as long as an ethernet cable is plugged into it.
I previously was having trouble with the Intel wireless card that came with the laptop, see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90473
I decided that card was defective, and am waiting for another one to be delivered.
Should I expect the wireless connection to be configured every time I start the laptop? I did save the profile. This is a HDD install!.
I am looking at /var/log/messages. Any thing to indicate why wireless has to be configured evey time I boot?
Any other files to look for?

I'm just making a WAG (wild-ass-guess) here: it may be that Puppy still fondly remembers the configuration of your original wireless card, but you went and replaced that card with a different one, so the configuration for the original card is confusing Puppy. I don't know how to fix this but I'll bet someone who does will be along shortly.

If I was you. I would look in /etc/resolv.conf and copy and paste what is in there to a blank text file and name it working when wireless is working. The, when it is not working.
Do the same and compare the 2 to see what differences there are. That is all I can think of without breaking out my Lighthouse 5 old IBM a22m and slapping my card into that one.
It has a bad lcd cable and requires me to hook up a external crt monitor to it to see anything. Maybe later on this week I will break it out and see with my card and report back.
Also. You did not mention connection manager you are using, example: Dougals, Barrys, Frisbee?

Using Dougals
Might try using Frisbee instead as it seems you are losing dhcpd saved settings.
Are you saving dhcpd using Dougals? It is a extra step after the 1st save. Auto DHCPD button in Dougals GUI.

When I switch from Dougals to Frisbee or Barrys. I delete the saved profile 1st before using those to start fresh so that there is no conflicting config files.

Which makes me wonder if you md5sum checked your Puppy iso after you downloaded it.
I religiously md5sum check linux iso downloads here in Texas because our ISP suck the big one and drop connections because the net infrastructure sucks out here.
Little gitches like a Window not opening when it should during a application process can be
a corrupted iso download that is causing that problem.

When I have switched them out on pcmcia Flash. The kernel assigns a new network interface. If original was wlan0. With the new card it becomes wlan1 with the new card.Flash wrote:roky, what happens if you now switch wireless adapter cards?
Antix has better command line tools eing Debian and H2 script based commands like inxi.

I have personally seen this happen on my Lighthouse install where eth1 is wireless and when card was changed. eth2 was what I had to configure for the next card.

I broke out the broke laptop and changed out wireless pcmcia. This one is a Dlink WNA 1330 Wireless G card capable of taking advantage of wpa_supplicant since I use wpa2 secured wireless. I edited my long echo command 2 posts up so it would work on my Lighthouse install. Wlanx is now wlan3 since I changed hardware/wireless.
Since inxi failed to detect wireless card. Puppy and inxi script have some comaptibility issues because of puppy file locations and structure. The chip is a atheros on the Dlink and uses the Ath5k module.
Anyhows, this is what inxi should have spit out from when I ran this card on another install at another time.

Might try Frisbee, but it does look complicated to do. Hope retro precise gets fixed so the next guy doe's not have to go thru the same mess.
I went to a used computer parts place to get a bigger HDD and more RAM. They asked how big a drive I had. It was an old 6GB drive that I had retroprecise installed on. The guy could not believe I had anything installed on only 6GB. I gave him a demo. Said he had a lot of 10 GB drives, and would try installing puppy on one. Hope he does not try to run wireless. I bought a 40GB drive and 1GB RAM.
This D600 originally had XP PRO on a 40 GB HDD and 512 MB RAM. Ran pretty good as well. It had been set up by the Cornell University tech staff. The guy must have known some tricks.

I reinstalled retroprecise 5.4.3. Went thru the Internet Connection Wizard. If I select the Autoconnect profile, the only security option is WEP. I can not select open. In my situation, I want open.
I then have to edit and create a profile so that I can operate open.
I think that because I can not run Autoconnect is the reason why I have to reconfigure wireless every time I reboot the D600.
