Quirky Tahr

#391 Post by broomdodger »

Installed: devx-6.0-tahr.pet

Compiled: vim 7.4.160

sylpheed-3.4.0beta5 already installed
updated to: sylpheed-3.4.0beta7

But it installed in a different place, I will check first next time:
sylpheed-3.4.0beta5 is /usr/bin/sylpheed
sylpheed-3.4.0beta7 is /usr/local/bin/sylpheed

No problem on a 4GB USB I still have 2.1 GB free!

Quirky6 T2 and Quirky6 Tahr are great fun.

I checked for broken links, after installing devx so do not know if they were there before.

Installed to a 32gb flash drive.
Updated ppm and installed firefox,lxterminal,lxtask,icewm,icewm
themes,emelfm2,xfe,mc,wine,xine,fotowall,aisleriot,mahjonng,pupsnap,grun,links,
and video-info-glx-1.5.3-noarch.pet.

I don't have the devx or kernel source installed, I did that in an
earlier install and it didn't go well.
I tried to compile the proprietary nvidia driver and it failed, it's
not really needed with the nouveau driver giving hardware acceleration.

PPM is working well, I did need to update it to add the Quirky 6 repo.

I will do another install to a pc with ati graphics and see how that
goes.

Thankyou Barry for Quirky Tahr 6.0!

Tahr: there were issues.

Didn't find my Radeon9200/128 at first boot, but xorgwiz+xwin shows OK with modesetting.

Where has the only icon set I can tolerate gone? ! [aluminium]

Confirm
qupzilla crashed
- it happened as soon as bbc iPlayer activated, not before.

Good news: Opera deb(other) i386 works perfectly as usual. D/l direct from opera.com

Had some problems with PPM. Quirky Tahr is empty, only Ubuntu ones seem to load?

This one seems faster all round.

Installed to a 16gb flash drive, pc is a gateway desktop.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Thu 30 Jan 2014 on Quirky Tahr 6.0 Linux 3.12.6 i686
5.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS780 [Radeon HD 3200]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RS780 01.00
X Server: Xorg Driver: modesetting
X.Org version: 1.14.5
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (507x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor
Core 0: @800 1: @800 2: @800 3: @800 MHz

After installing the devx and
linux_kernel-3.12.6-nopae-aufs-squashfsbuiltin-i486-quirky6.pet I
tried to compile the
amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.1-legacy-linux-x86.x86_64.run
proprietary driver but it failed with an error that said 1 or more of
the necessary components was missing.

I updated ppm and installed smplayer and smtube from the ubuntu repo,
it needed a libwrap dependency which I found in ppm and installed.
I compiled mplayer-checkout-2014-01-30-i686.pet and smplayer is
working well.
Installed a few other programs from the ubuntu repo as well.

Apart from the proprietary driver not compiling Quirky Tahr is working
well so far.

EDIT:
Installing go-mtpfs-20130628.pet,mtp_detect-0.11-exper-noarch.pet,and
mtpstatus-0.3-i486.pet allows transferring files between the pc and my
nexus7 tablet.
The unmount icon is in the tray.

BusyBox has a 'stable' update that fixes many things
20 January 2014 -- BusyBox 1.22.1 (stable)
http://www.busybox.net/

Quirky Tahr 6.0 uses an 'unstable' BusyBox

Quirky Tahr looks like yet another winner. Installed to partition no probs and recognised the Radeon graphics card with xorgwizard. Installed using Manjaro as the host.

Qupzilla doing fine as the default browser. Would be nice to get the *xz file trimmed down a little if at all feasible.

Will play with it some more over an extended period and also try out the install to USB script.
Real progress!

Should be announced on Distrowatch btw.

Quirky Tahr first impressions. I get the wanted 1360x768 resolution, which Quirky 6.0 - 6.1.X didnt give and neither Slacko64. HDMI output to LCD TV works. Both audio and video using intel graphics. I had to remove nouveau.ko because it is still broken in 3.12.6 kernel. Suspending and waking up freezes totally. That is same problem with all 3.12.X kernels with my nvida optimus - intel dual graphics laptop.
After removing nouveau.ko my dual graphics uses only intel and all is good.

Gimp, Qbittorrent, Google-chrome, Thunderbird, Smplayer ( with Mplayer2 ) all works fine.

Thanks...

Any font sizes set withing Qupzilla preferences seem to get ignored by web pages. I therefore installed Firefox 25 build3 via the package manager without issue.

I also installed the latest Libreoffice 4.2 (issued today) using the DEBS from the main Libreoffice site.

To install this use dpkg -i --force-depends *.deb

You will get errors relating to a missing dpkg folder under /var. Similar for the file status and the directory info. Simply create these manually when you see the error messages in the terminal. You can access the binaries under /opt in order to run Libreoffice.

This would be easier if supplied as a PET or DEB package. if I can find the time I'll get this organised.

Acccording to Barry's Blog
3. The "pet-tahr" repo in the Quirky Package Manager is not yet working
It's a lot of work for Barry to make a repository since all the apps
in the Ubuntu Tahr repository have to be carefully copied to a new
database.

Can someone download dropbox from portablelinuxapps.com and see if it appears in the taskbar?

Yes, of course, Don. So why is there a tahr repo prominently listed and shown as default?! There is/was not enough explanation, maybe, as BK himself admits. Yes, it's a lot of work. The biggest problem I am facing is that a large cache of putative users and recruits are frightened witless by confronting a CLI installation of an .img file. This is a fast ,compact GUI-based offering, it deserves an .iso whether or not BK is inclined to provide it or not, despite the technical objections. We all have to work with folk the way they are not the way we would like. The devil's OS has expended $tn on providing pretty pictures, clickety-clicking, & co. to get a receptive market. IT education alone is unlikely to offer an answer either now or in the longer term because it remains the fastest moving technology. Goodness knows where next. A couple of years ago it would've been a cause for intense mirth to suggest that these machines could be operated by shouting, winking or even thinking commands - now everyone is doing it. What next?!

On DW BK talks about a live cd ??

http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=08279

This is a small and experimental live CD which, unlike the the original Quirky 6.0 released last month, is binary compatible with "Trusty Tahr", Ubuntu's current development tree. From the

But on ibiblio I do not see it.

Could anyone give me the link to this LIVECD ?

(which might make installing much easier for noobs like me).

I added xfce4 with PPM, it's not working 100% yet but it's useable, fun playing with it anyways :)
EDIT:
Getting closer.
EDIT:
It takes some time to set up but I like it.
EDIT:
Just discovered the wallpaper manager, allows changing wallpaper automatically.
