Directory structure is different from the 3.6.x series.

Fine effort, OscarTalks...it is much appreciated, especially the prompt updating! The sfs route keeps my puppy mods (i.e., savefile) nice and lean.

I will give it a try...hopefully all goes well.

I am using a Fujitsu Siemens esprimo P5905 with a 3GHz cpu.My main file is slacko 5.7. I downloaded the link http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks to get the 'tor-browser-4.0-x86.pet' file and get the message to open with an application. I do not know which application to use . Can someone help me please? Thanks.

Hello NETTKNUT,

Are you downloading with a browser such as Firefox and the "open with" is in the download dialog box?

If so you should open with petget. If it does not offer you petget as an option choose "other" then "File System" and navigate with double clicks to usr>local>petget>petget and "open". This should add petget to the options in the dialog.

Otherwise use the "save file" option in the dialog rather than "open with". This saves the .pet in your usual download location (eg /root/Downloads or whatever you have set). Then just open that download location folder in ROX to see the .pet and click on it to install it.

There's a new version, 4.0.3, out. And not only that, but when I opened 4.0.2, I received a small, exterior to the browser, pop up window that asked me if I wanted to "download and install" 4.0.3. Should I go for it, or is it likely to mess up things, such as not work or add megabytes to my save file?

Not sure if the automatic updating process works in Puppy. Might be interesting to test it but I always just delete all my old profile data and start again.

Thanks for the update and info. Do you know an easy way to keep my old bookmarks? Maybe a file I can save before deleting the old version?

Looks like the Tor browser profile (with all bookmarks, addons, etc) is stored in this folder:
/root/my-applications/tor-browser/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default

4.0.6 is out now. I was able to update OscarTalks' SFS pretty easily. But maybe others might appreciate new packages?

I decided to put the Tor Browser in my /mnt/home directory. Here's how I did it:

I downloaded Oscar's latest sfs file. I clicked on the downloaded sfs file, whereupon I was given the choice of "viewing it's contents" it or "installing" it. I chose the former, and a window opened showing me the files.

I created a directory on my home directory (which is one of my hard drives). Then I browsed through the copied files, clicking on "root", then "my-applications", then "tor-browser". I copied the two items in "tor-browser", which were "Browser" directory and "start-tor-browser", to my newly created folder.

I then mouse-dragged the "start-tor-browser" icon to my desktop creating a link.

When I click on the link, tor browser opens. One advantage of this is that I can use the same "installation" in various save-files, merely creating a link in other desktops. Also, I've found out that when new updates come out, tor automatically asks me if I want to update, and it updates with no problems.

a tip: I've found out that from time to time, or perhaps it's just in a new savefile, I have to update my clock to the correct time or tor browser will not open, hanging up part way through the startup. Sometimes I've had problems with getting my clock synched correctly, where the correct time was not showing in the right bottom corner. In most cases I didn't really care and didn't bother to fix it, but for tor it has to be correct.

Just downloaded and using the latest 4.0.5 sfs.

No problem auto-updating to the newest 4.0.8.

Packages now updated to version 4.0.8
The updating process (auto or manual) now seems to work without needing to create fresh profiles or anything. Users may find that they get a lot of "captcha" verification requests because the "tor exit nodes tend to earn a bad reputation". It has its limitations but can prove useful on occasions. Thanks to all the folks who are testing and responding.

Also it has AppArmor that limits the browser integration with the operating system to limit out of bounds exploits.

This is the 32 bit version with x86 in the name. I am not sure if it is i386 or i686 but if we can establish that I will specify in future. I have added a note to the first post. I don't do the verification but do always download from the official site. Puppy does not appear to have the gpg tool but I may look into this in future. Packages from me should always be regarded as experimental. Usual precautions should always be taken.
