PostPosted: Mon 10 Feb 2014, 05:12    Post subject:  Cannot Install Guest Additions in Precise in VirtualBox

hi

running various puppies in virtualbox.

i'm unable to get the vbox shared folder to mount.

i tried installing off of guest additions virtual cd, but that fails.

i think i have to install something for guest additions from the repository, but not sure which.

has anyone found a solution to this?

thx!

hi johnywhy,

i think that you need both the devx.sfs and kernel-src.sfs for guest additions to install

Results from attempting install of Additions with Devx only (not kernel). Is this a success? Or should i still install the kernel source?

note "Doing non-kernel setup"

Code:
# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.3.6 Guest Additions for Linux............
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Removing installed version 4.3.6 of VirtualBox Guest Additions...
Copying additional installer modules ...
Installing additional modules ...
Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules
The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following
module compilation fails then this could be the reason.

Building the main Guest Additions module ...fail!
(Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong)
Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.
Installing the Window System drivers
Installing X.Org Server 1.12 modules ...done.
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions ...done.
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done.

When i open Shared Folders from vbox menu, i still get "Additions not installed" error.

For kernel source:
not sure where to get the kernel. is it one of these?

linux_kernel-2.6.39.4-PAE-slacko.pet
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-slacko/

kernel_sources-3.2.13-c.sfs
http://www.carolina-linux.com/elroy/lina-lite/kernel/

kernel_src-2.6.39.4-patched.sfs
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-slacko/

or
http://bkhome.org/sources/

or just install from Package Manager inside puppy? Which one of these?
http://s19.postimg.org/5hh90i6b7/Screenshot.png

in package manager, i'm also seeing this one. Is this what i want?
"virtualbox-kernel-addons-4.2.16-k3.10.19i686"

Using X-slacko-1.0.iso. it's the only iso available at
http://www.carolina-linux.com/rg66/X-slacko/iso/

Not sure if it's PAE or non-PAE, but Package Manager lists a bunch of "PAE" items as being installed.

X-slacko. It's the only non-delta iso, so I think it's PAE.

Do i need to install those deltas?

i installed 3.2.45 from the package manager (only because it's the newest one). See pic.

But it did not seem to be installed, so i opened the downloaded archive from root. It asked me if i wanted to install, and i said yes.

but i still do not see it in any of the UNinstallers, and still getting "additions not installed" error when i try to run 'shared folders' from vbox menu.

also, why is devx 'queued'?

plz see pics.

thx!

you will need to find your kernel version ...... menu>>>>system>>>>hardinfo and click on the' operating system' section

then find the matching kernel source.sfs.

not sure what that queing thing you're having with the devx is ..... i usually just right click on an .sfs file and choose sfs_load
