PuppEX (Puppy Slacko64) Live DVD with kernel 4.3

#1 Post by exton »

PuppEX Slacko 64 bit is a remaster of Puppy Linux Slacko64 6.3.0, released on November 16, 2015. Kernel 4.3.0-x86_64-puppex is used. Kernel 4.3 is the latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org as of 151130. PuppEX uses the original Puppy Slacko64 Desktop. I have added PCManFM and LXTerminal. They are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 766 MB, which is due to me including also NVIDIA Graphics driver 352.63, Gimp, Vlc Media Player 2.2.1 installed from source (so you can run it as root), Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86 (for Netflix), Adobe Flash and compiling tools. Puppy Slacko original is of only 234 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).

Compatible with Slackware 14.1
The beauty of Puppy Slacko64 is that programs that are available for Slackware 14.1 also can be easily installed and run in Puppy Slacko64 (and thus also in PuppEX).

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES
I’ve changed kernel from 4.1.11 to 4.3.0-x86_64-puppex and installed NVIDIA Graphics driver 352.63. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “modern

Speed?

#4 Post by exton »

Thanks for testing!

I'm interested to know if you've noticed a decrease in speed. I.e. if you compare PuppEX with the original Puppy system.

I downloaded last night and have been running for a few hours, it feels very snappy, same as slacko64 to me.

Only issue I had is my wifi with b4321 chip did not work. I copied b43 firmware folders from LXPupSC which had working wifi OOTB. Wifi working now.

I downloaded this pupex distro on my 2005 laptop, then half-way through realized it was 64-bit only. Whoops

Hi Terry H,

I am curious (if you have the time), does your wifi work with this 4.3 build? I think LXPupSc uses an EmSee version also.

Yes LXPupSC uses stemsee's kernel. Downloading iso and i'll let you know.

Yes it worked OOTB. This iso also has some additional b43 firmware which isn't in the 64-bit LXPupSC.

Terry H,

Thanks for testing PuppEX Slacko and also for the tip about b43 firmware! I will add it next time.

Works on SSD in Lenovo G50-30

#11 Post by LoboGrande »

I've been running PuppEx Tahr(frugal) on a Samsung 840 Pro SSD for about 6 months. It was the only Linux I found that wifi worked out of box but it was cranky. PuppEx Slacko doesn't seem to have any issues with the Realtek 8723BE wifi card that PuppEx Tahr showed. Love the speed that the 64bit OS is showing on this machine now. Thanks!

How to used the built-in NVidia driver versus Nouveau

#13 Post by gcmartin »

I got this from SourceForge. Correct checksum (md5)?

Code: Select all

4c162573b8e17615099c8ce7acb6c377 puppex-slacko-64bit-766mb-151130.iso
Boots using pfix=ram, copy, setup FirstRUN localizations, tailored SAMBA via Menu>Network>SSM and all is well as I share this PC's download folder contents.
ImageImage
Video driver Questions
System boot chose Nouveau instead of the motherboard's Nvidia.
  • Is there a boot setting so that proprietary driver is chosen?
Or, is there some recommended steps to have system boot using the enclosed nVidia video driver?
Stable and very swift operations. Thanks muchly.

Bug
In a ROX folder window, if you open a video file by clicking its icon the gnome-mplayer opens to play the video. While that is playing, if you open a 2nd file, subsequently, it too plays. But, the 2nd player CANNOT be stopped at all unless the 1st video is stopped.

Further, if the player's help file is opened, the link shown in the help window will not take the user to the site for additional info.

P.S. Future idea to consider
Out of the box with the default layout, The left taskbar when it is popped, covers the leftmost drive icon. There are several ways this can be gotten around: move drive icons to the right slightly or .... Operationally, though, this does not impact stability nor taskbar/desktop operations.

Manually, I am aware of how to change the taskbar locations in the Tray Configuration screen from "Buntoo" to "Puppy" to move bar positions.
Image

And manually, I am aware of how to change the location of the Drive's icons (must remember to click the "realign" checkbox):

Why doesnt wireless adapter show up for setup?

#14 Post by gcmartin »

LAN subsystem issue
The wired feature is detected and shown

Code: Select all

# ip addr
But, the wireless hardware feature is NOT shown or detected. Thus no ability to setup wireless on this laptop.

What can be given to help ID this problem?

Nvidia and wireless

#15 Post by exton »

gcmartin,

Nvidia: Run the command nvidia-xconfig and log out and back again. If that doesn't work your card isn't supported.

Wireless: Looks like your card isn't supported. Broadcom?

wireless issue

#17 Post by Wellesfargo »

I hav a Lenovo X1 Carbon with the iwlwifi card. I have to setup my wireless networking everytime I restart the ultrabook. The setting is saved but it is never active after rebooting. I am setup as a frugal boot on a USB flash drive. Tahr 6 see the card on reboot (also setup on the same flash drive as frugal setup). Any suggestions on how to make it sable?

Slacko64 doesn't detect my network cards.
PuppEX does detect wireless and wired. At least the wired works fine.
My newish laptop is alleged to have both Intel and nvidia graphics drivers.
PuppEX from a DVD tries to load nouveau, but something gets confused, and eventually the Nvidia hardware sort of disappears.
Some status reports below:

I don't understand what the ACPI warnings mean, and I have no idea how nouveau gets involved even when I select some other driver.

I have a decent photo of the screen, but my max upload size is 0 bytes, so I can't upload it. I tried to transcribe it accurately, but there may be some errors.

I got PuppEX to boot from a flashdrive.
I could not get a printer configured and working in CUPS. The printer queue name is there, but on attempting to print, it reports that some needed directory does not exist. I seem to have CUPS modules both from Slacko and from the Slackware repository, with an assortment of different revision levels, some apparent duplication, and they're clearly not getting along with each other.

Wifi and ethernet work fine.
Audio works fine.

Dmesg reports a large number of messages about nvidia and nouveau problems and conflicts. The sequence seems to suggest that multiple installers are fighting each other, and eventually sort of give up, removing what they can, and leaving me with unaccelerated video. It does boot X, and run as quickly as I expect any Puppy to run. I'm not doing anything right now that would tax a video system, but I'd like to get it fixed so it boots with no/fewer error messages, and will work with other than max resolution.

The full transcript of dmesg's output prints to 13 pages, so I have provided a greatly abridged copy here.
Blank lines below sub for output that seemed to indicate success,
or at least not abject failure.
