#1 Post by Pete »

Hi everyone

The title says it all.
Any recommendations as to an available browser and Puppy version?

Thanks in advance.
Pete.

HTML5test how well does your browser support HTML5?
The HTML5 test score is an indication of how well your browser supports the upcoming HTML5 standard and related specifications. Even though the specification isn't finalized yet,
Test HERE
http://html5test.com/

My Firefox result.
Your browser scores 424 out of 555 points
You are using Firefox 27.0 on Ubuntu... Wrong Puppy
Precise Puppy 5.7.1 Retro Fatty Edition. Hp Compaq 2510p 2x Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Cpu U7700@ 1.33 ghz,2 gig ram Booting from 8 gig micro USB + 32 gig SD card instead of HDD

You can install in recent puppies (precise 5.7.1, slacko 5.6...) firefox:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=91945

or install and update:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=91108

Read:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=86801

To convert in html5 youtube flashplayer's contents I use:

https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/a ... 5/?src=api

My experience says that html5 go to be developed but the web still stays on flashplayer's contents. So still install the plugins you need.

Thank you for the replies.
My intention is to use it to play retro type games available in HTML5.

@L18L

I was under the impression that SeaMonkey was not HTML5 compatible, but will try it, thanks.

@NickAu

Thanks for the link, will use it to test.

@watchdog

I don't use Ubuntu but have Firefox on a win7 machine so decided to test it:

Your browser scores 448 out of 555 points
You are using Firefox 27.0 on Windows 7

Why the discrepancy?

As for your retro type game, a link would have been helpful...

html5 is when 1st line of page source is

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html>
and every browser can render such a doctype...

Almost any browser (except IE of course) is available for Puppy.

One example:

I don't agree with that statement as it certainly does not mean it's specifically HTML5 but simply HTML.
HTML5 comes from the elements it uses which are not present in "normal" HTML.

Kind of unfair as it is running in Wine but after 3 minutes I gave up

Point Proven. :P

And I use precise puppy its just that those sort of things pick it up as Unbuntu ( prob because its based on it??)

Why the discrepancy?

My up to date Firefox under Win 7 scored 418.
Yes I turned off AV!

Maybe the title should be something about games....

Hi...

In case it helps, my copy of Google Chrome, version 25 (on Ubuntu) performed pretty well on the HTML5 test, scoring 495, if I remember correctly. I'm using a newer version on Puppy, so perhaps I could test that version later. :)

Dont know how many are aware: HTML5 is the "language" of apps and games for both Apple and Android phones with Microsoft coming in starting late last year. The idea, that they all use, is that any developer can create an app/game on one of these, and have it also work and run on all the others OSes (including PCs with correct peripherals).

In a way, this also extends from Puppy to those smartDevices as well. So, the title may have been correct to bring awareness to the community that HTML5 can be extremely useful for desktop apps in Puppy Linux as we move into our future.

Puppy Linux could be a cornerstone/foundation for not only its own needs but also for being a useful platform for build/test/launch of cross-platform stuff in the home.

This community may be on the verge of a resurgence of Puppy Linux growth and extension, should choices be made to take advantage of the Puppy technology additions we are starting to see including those that have happened in Puppyland just this year: MTP being just one of those.

Hope this helps

@gcmartin

Quite right, HTML 5 (plus javascript and WebGL) is gaining popularity as a cross platform frame work and will become ever more popular in the near future.

As an example, it's one of the "standards" (Qt being the other) for writing apps on the new Ubuntu phones.
