Slacko 5.7 - March 2014

#1 Post by 01micko »

After many months of work, stresses, set backs, hassles and fun.. I can finally announce the release of

Slacko 5.7

Visit the Download page.
EDIT: above link is broken for now. See it HERE.

Official release notes: here

Further notes: here.

It is available in NON pae 5.7 and PAE 5.7.0. The devx for respective versions (important only because they contain respective kernel headers) is available from the main download area. The kernel sources are in the pet_packages-slacko14 repository at your favourite mirror (and should download ok with the inbuilt sfs manager).

Enjoy!

Almost 2 am so too late for lengthy reports but successful fresh manual frugal install on the AMD box and a successful upgrade from 5.6.8 to 5.7 on the Intel box w/everything working.

Why is cdrdao included ?
I can't see any pre-installed apps relying on it.

Code: Select all

# cdrdao
Cdrdao version 1.2.3 - (C) Andreas Mueller <andreas@daneb.de>

...No bugs so far

I couldnt resist. Yeah. I had to download Slacko.
I opened an pdf and I used the search with Ctrl + F....as I always do. And....it seems the old bug is there....
Or is it just me.
Fine job anyway. The icon work by Zigbert is really fantastic !
And the whole Slacko of course.

New frugal install complete on hp 6730b laptop. No bugs found with my softwares. Newly compiled motion, mtools, v4l-utils. I uploaded motion, I think the only newly compiled needed, in Security section of Additional Software. I got aware of new feature of lighencrypted slackosaves' filesystem check at boot. Installed Wxcam by PPM: extra install needed as for slacko 5.6:

http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-1 ... /0.3alpha/

Many thanks.

EDIT: got aware of new Pavrecord in Multimedia menu. Wxcam not needed.

Non-pae Frugal install is working fine. The firefox ESR is version 17 where as 24 is out. How to go about updating it?

AMD Athlon 3500 64 (1.5GB)
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
Slacko 5.7 Frugal DVD boot image (Non-PAE)

Boots to black screen.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and drops to text mode, xorgwizard select VESA, xwin and loads GUI OK.

Belkin wireless F5D6050 USB not found by Frisbee. Load at76c50x-usb-firmware.pet reboot and Frisbee connects to internet OK.

See that its the same dev version of abiword as in 5.6 which for me crashed after 30 mins of entering text and images (abiword stable as per slacko 5.5 works a lot better for me)

Tried updating graphics to NVidia, mouse locked up. Hard shutdown, savefile deleted and reverted back to more stable Slacko 5.5.

From what I did see of 5.7 it all looked nice.

Puppy Package Manger, search for "evince" and install that and its dependencies and it seems to be a much better alternative (installs to menu, documents, document viewer)
