Can someone faced?
Hello, sancxjo.
You need latest version of GetFlash (broken links in older versions).
Get this one from here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 869#835869 or here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=84267
If your CPU is an older Athlon box, then use latest 10.xxx version. Version 11 is for more recent CPU's.
Cheers!

P.S. Anybody out there who could help me with compiling Nvidia legacy for Slacko 5.70? Please view my post on page 25. Thanks!

Are you sure you are using the NON-PAE version?
The reason I ask is because you say Slacko 5.70
The PAE Slacko is usually numbered 5.7.0
The non-PAE Slacko is usually numbered 5.7 (without the "0")

If you are sure you are using the correct kernel sources then it may be that the driver is old and was never updated to work with more recent kernels. If so then you may need to use your favourite search engine to look for a patch.

You got me wondering if I've downloaded correct versions of kernel sources and devx. I'm afraid that your assumption was correct. :?

Got the kernel sources from here
(kernel_sources-3.4.82-slacko_4g_f2fs.sfs) According to Mick's post here this is the non pae kernel. But...
Link for the devx.sfs via SFS manager (menu/setup) was broken so I found 'em here but mistakenly downloaded wrong version - 5.70 instead of 5.7.
I'll give it a shot later today, though I'm not very optimistic about final results, because Mick already noted that
Old nvidia N3x cards (mx440, fx5200 and some others) often do not render properly.
For those use this string in a similar fashion to above:
nouveau.noaccel=1
which is correct and I managed to get proper resolution after switching to vesa, loading kernel sources and then choosing Nvidia driver with KMS.
I'm fine with OS drivers but my girls are not pleased since they can't play some of their favorite games.
So be it. I'll report later today, hopefully with 'capable to play games' driver.

Thank you, Oscar. You have a sharp eye!

Hi

@ Griot

Here are drivers for both
Slacko-5.7 and Slacko-5.7.0 Before attempting to use these packages, please make a backup of your savefile.
Use entirely at your own risk !

Hey, CatDude.
Long time no see, mate. :D

You were first to help with the same issue last year when I started with Puppy (and Linux) and I'm very grateful for your assistance.
This is very much appreciated.

Of course, if it wasn't for Oscar's quick response, I could have been struggling with M$ again. :D Just kidding. Win No More!

There's so much to learn about this wonderful OS and FLOSS in general
and I'm having a real fun here. Well, it's no always funny but I'm
still standing. :)

Thank you!

No problem mate,
i'm always happy when these packages work for other users.
It makes it (the pain in building these buggers  ) all worth while.

Nouveau is back!

#386 Post by Griot »

Hi, folks.

After a month of use of nvidia proprietary drivers for Slacko 5.7
provided by CatDude (thanks again, mate!), nouveau rears it's head again!
Does this make any sense? :?
Is it something related to kernel source .sfs being loaded
or something else?

Terminal output of 'glxinfo' looks fine, but 'lsmod' spits out a whole
bunch of nouveau modules in use.
Should I get rid of them by 'rmmod nouveau' , blacklist 'em via startup manager or...?

Finaly, here's my current 'lsmod' output:

Code: Select all

Get Palemoon browser for slacko-5.7(.0) (latest version - 27th July, 2015). It is a fork of Firefox.

It runs as 'New Moon' as it is customised so it is a licence requirement to disable official branding.

It is the third pet as the one for 593 will not run in this version of slacko.

Just wanted to bump this thread with a link to rcrsn51's Legacy Grub Config 2013
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 147#692147

Also, a nice assist by OscarTalks in installing the latest Firefox on Slacko 5.7
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=105462

I hadn't realized how close to perfection this version was for my computer.

The links to Nvidia legacy drivers provided by CatDude here are no longer active. Does anyone have these drivers, or know where I can download them?

archive.org indexes pretty well on google so worth running the file name, also I add loads of stuff so it's worth popping in from time to time on the site http://archive.org/details/puppylinux for a mooch about

:)

ps - if anybody knows of a repo worth mirroring get in touch

I tried to use CatDude's proprietary nVidia driver for PAE. Not only did this fail, it rendered the x server unrecoverable. When the driver was installed, the most noticeable error message was "No screens found". Not sure what that means. Anyway, I have booted into the live CD, and would like to recover x by replacing the borked xorg on the frugal install with the liveCD xorg. Is that the way to fix this? I will also be interested in uninstalling the proprietary nVidia driver.

Where is the main xorg file located? First, I swapped xorg.conf file, and when that didn't work, I swapped the entire X11 directory. Same negative result:

Code: Select all

Fatal server error. No screens found.
I guess I should have made a backup before I tried this graphics driver. How would I make a backup, just copy the savefile and rename it?

I will start over, I guess.

Outdated version of Chromium (version 25) refuses to allow user to sign in. Reportedly, also true of Chrome, outdated version won't allow sign in, saying "The sync server is busy, please try again."

This is Dell Precision 390 core2 desktop with 4GB ram, 2x2T hdd (not RAID).
Pfind froze yesterday, and I had to shut down x with cntl + alt + backspace. When I reached desktop again, there were no bookmarks. I rebooted again with the same result. I tried to restore bookmarks from backups, restore did not work. Then I tried to singly add bookmarks, but bookmarks could not be added. I also noticed that the default search engine was completely out of commission. Browser history was not working as well. Mozilla Support provided the following tutorial.
Fix the Bookmarks file

If your changes to your bookmarks do not appear when you restart Firefox, the issue may be that your bookmarks file is write-protected. A write-protected file can't be changed, which prevents Firefox from saving any changes you have made.

Create a new Bookmarks file

Bookmarks and browsing history are stored in the Firefox profile folder in the file places.sqlite. If there is a problem with this file, your bookmark changes may be lost whenever you restart Firefox. You can force Firefox to create another places.sqlite file by deleting (or renaming) the existing one.

You might want to print these directions out, or copy them down to reference because you will have to close Firefox to delete or rename the files.
Warning: Once you delete the places.sqlite file, you will lose all of your browsing history. Firefox only keeps one copy of this file and there are no automatic backups for browsing history as there are for bookmarks.

Open your profile folder:

Click the menu button New Fx Menu , click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Directory. A window with your profile files will open.
Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.

Close Firefox completely:

Click the menu button New Fx Menu and then click Exit Close 29 .
In your profile folder, find the files places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal (if it exists) and delete them (or rename for example, to places.sqliteOLD, to keep the old file as a backup) .

(Optional) Also delete the file xulstore.json. This will reset any toolbar customizations you have made.

When you next start Firefox, it will create a new places.sqlite file and automatically import the most recent bookmark backup file. Your bookmarks will be restored from backup but you will lose your browsing history. Note that browsing history is used for the address bar autocomplete feature.
