I tried to use CatDude's proprietary nVidia driver for PAE. Not only did this fail, it rendered the x server unrecoverable. When the driver was installed, the most noticeable error message was "No screens found". Not sure what that means. Anyway, I have booted into the live CD, and would like to recover x by replacing the borked xorg on the frugal install with the liveCD xorg. Is that the way to fix this? I will also be interested in uninstalling the proprietary nVidia driver.

Where is the main xorg file located? First, I swapped xorg.conf file, and when that didn't work, I swapped the entire X11 directory. Same negative result:
Code:
Fatal server error. No screens found.

I guess I should have made a backup before I tried this graphics driver. How would I make a backup, just copy the savefile and rename it?

I will start over, I guess.

Outdated version of Chromium (version 25) refuses to allow user to sign in. Reportedly, also true of Chrome, outdated version won't allow sign in, saying "The sync server is busy, please try again."

This is Dell Precision 390 core2 desktop with 4GB ram, 2x2T hdd (not RAID).
Pfind froze yesterday, and I had to shut down x with cntl + alt + backspace. When I reached desktop again, there were no bookmarks. I rebooted again with the same result. I tried to restore bookmarks from backups, restore did not work. Then I tried to singly add bookmarks, but bookmarks could not be added. I also noticed that the default search engine was completely out of commission. Browser history was not working as well. Mozilla Support provided the following tutorial.
Quote:
Fix the Bookmarks file

If your changes to your bookmarks do not appear when you restart Firefox, the issue may be that your bookmarks file is write-protected. A write-protected file can't be changed, which prevents Firefox from saving any changes you have made.

Create a new Bookmarks file

Bookmarks and browsing history are stored in the Firefox profile folder in the file places.sqlite. If there is a problem with this file, your bookmark changes may be lost whenever you restart Firefox. You can force Firefox to create another places.sqlite file by deleting (or renaming) the existing one.

You might want to print these directions out, or copy them down to reference because you will have to close Firefox to delete or rename the files.
Warning: Once you delete the places.sqlite file, you will lose all of your browsing history. Firefox only keeps one copy of this file and there are no automatic backups for browsing history as there are for bookmarks.

Open your profile folder:

Click the menu button New Fx Menu , click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Directory. A window with your profile files will open.
Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.

Close Firefox completely:

Click the menu button New Fx Menu and then click Exit Close 29 .
In your profile folder, find the files places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal (if it exists) and delete them (or rename for example, to places.sqliteOLD, to keep the old file as a backup) .

(Optional) Also delete the file xulstore.json. This will reset any toolbar customizations you have made.

When you next start Firefox, it will create a new places.sqlite file and automatically import the most recent bookmark backup file. Your bookmarks will be restored from backup but you will lose your browsing history. Note that browsing history is used for the address bar autocomplete feature.

There is a .pet package of mplayer which is more recent than version 1.2.1 here:-
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks
Compiled in Slacko 5.7 (slack14.0 in the name)
it has GUI enabled (gmplayer) so you can add other skins.

More info in this thread here:-

Possible remedy for browser and ROX freezing: simply press Ctrl to release freeze. Works on browser hangs, when the circular progress indicator stops.

Room in ~/ shouldn't be a problem.

Rename /root/.mozilla/firefox >> /root/.mozilla/firefox_anything-your-heart-desires.

Dwnld one of the builds near the end.. You'll choose good enough.

Unpack it somewhere.. /usr/lib or /tmp if unsure.

/tmp won't be permanent.

Fire the binary!

If you leave ~/.mozilla open, you'll notice a new FF directory gets created.

The whole shebang? No more than two minutes.

This method allows you to reinstall the same version you had.

And should you need one of these, it goes in /usr/share/applications.

I'm stuck at the "Fire the Binary" step. I've clicked on Firefox-bin and it has no effect. To get to this stage I had already shut down FF so I'm offline. Do you have any other suggestions to get FF upgraded to Firefox-46.0b1a please?

Then for all practical purposes, we'll shoot for a real install.

Extract your download to /usr/lib, then drag "firefox" to your desktop.

Were you trying to tell me the binary doesn't launch? I see no reason why it shouldn't.

Don't however use the menu to launch this new guy.

The old one will fire and populate the new profile with old build files..

NOT desirable.

Should you find the new version adequate, we can adjust for permanence.
