Are y'all aware of this Linux Arm activity?

http://techtablets.com/forum/topic/linux-on-atom-based-devices/page/12/

Perhaps some of the effort may be common & shared?

I'm looking at getting a Chuwi Hi12 & would love to run a FatdogARM vs Mint on it.

@edoc: Are you confusing Atom with ARM?

You know, when starhawk referred me to FatdogARM I didn't even put the two together!

ooops!

So, which Puppy do you think is most likely to match what they are doing with Linux Mint on those tablets?

Thanks!

I sit corrected. I saw "tablet" and assumed ARM. Sorry 'bout that!

You will need something with a very recent kernel to run on that hardware.

Marv knows a little about that, IIRC. Maybe he can answer for us?

Using tex dog method I was able to get OMXplayer to work in fatdog arm

I used omxplayer_0.3.7~git20160506~6c90c75_armhf.deb

I had to install Samba as well because it needs samba-client
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/arm/packages/beta/samba4-4.0.15-armhf-1.tbz

I checked it with mp4 and mp3 files

There is a problem with displaying text however that maybe because I didn't install
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/f/fonts-freefont/fonts-freefont-ttf_20120503-4_all.deb

Most keyboard bindings work

Quote:
Key bindings
Key Action
1 Increase Speed
2 Decrease Speed
j Previous Audio stream
k Next Audio stream
i Previous Chapter
o Next Chapter
n Previous Subtitle stream
m Next Subtitle stream
s Toggle subtitles
q Exit OMXPlayer
Space or p Pause/Resume
- Decrease Volume
+ Increase Volume
Left Seek -30
Right Seek +30
Down Seek -600
Up Seek +600

I will post when I put right click menus inside.

Great Don, what was your package size.. I figured I must have added too much unneeded when it became 20M compressed. Got a RPi3 so playing with that currently ( well actually doing my burn-in 24/7/30day ) so havent tested FDA yet.

The package size is very small if I leave out the free fonts package and
the Samba package (under 10 megs)

...but the bad news is I have 2 SD cards . The original where I made the
first install is working . The second card where I tested my omxplayer package has stuttering video. So a lot more work is needed.

I got right click menus to work by launching omxplayer in a terminal

Code:

defaultterm -e omxplayer.bin "$@"

Playing video from sdcard can be slow, too slow there is a cache setting somewhere ( I do not recall having to install fonts ) I playback using a usb harddrive never run into problems, also can with some minor modification have the fd-arm.sfs and saveback files on usb.
I started with the browser hooks package so I see its not needed after all.

@Jamesbond, in our past, was an inspiration when he created and deployed a method so that LAN machines could start from a FD PC versus the need for local media. This worked successfully for x86 PCs booting from that FD machine.

The SLOW media that is used on arms would get a "shot in the arm" if they, too, could boot from a FD PC which is using @JamesBond's "Netboot" utility. Certainly would be faster that the slow local Arm media.

Mere thoughts, IMHO.

I got a second card to work with my package of omxplayer.

First make sure you have libtirpc and samba installed...

ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/arm/packages/beta/libtirpc-0.2.4-armhf-1.tbz
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/arm/packages/beta/samba4-4.0.15-armhf-1.tbz

then download and install my package of omxplayer

I found that leafpad 0.8.18 would open a script properly but then
save it improperly.

I compiled version 0.8.17 and it works properly with scripts.

Can you recommend a very cheap tablet which works with this Puppy?
I'd be interested to use it mainly to support the Easycap device which has models with differents chips, most of them not working on Android tablets.
