Hello Everybody,
Today sees the release of Legacy OS 2.1 LTS (Long Term Release) the final Series 2 release ever! While there won't be any new releases for the 2 Series you can still expect new applications will be added to the repository over time. In this release you'll find some new applications and a few that have been update like the Opera Web Browser. Those who are currently using Legacy OS 2 will notice an improvement in Usability / Look and Feel. A number of configuring applications that once looked more like scripts now look like normal applications. With over 200 menu choices for users to choose from Legacy OS 2.1 LTS brings together a collection of extremely useful applications that could make a Pentium III PC far more useful then a user could imagine. Install once and use for years to come.

Happened to be on my Xubuntu box and Legacy OS 2.1 boots live.
Going to try on an old P3 with 256 mb of ram in a few.

Second test....old P3...733 mhz with 256 mb ram. It boots.

Now to try an install.

Successful full install on the old P3...... no problems. Pretty snappy even on this old box.

I've not installed it yet but I have made the following notes based on its running as a live disk;

1 / Konqueror is really not fit for purpose now as a web browser (though it's probably still a decent file manager). It crashed twice even on what was a fairly undemanding site.

2 / Flash doesn't work with Opera 12.02, although it will with Opera 11.64 (which is easy to install instead).

Just downloaded to external usb storage using my 701SD netbook.
Must get a usb CD/DVD burner for it.
However, the older Acer and even older IBM laptops both have CD’s, so will use one or both of them to test.
Really good to see you are still improving Legacy OS.
You make users of older kit very happy by offering an outstanding alternative to (well you know what I mean).
Now to find those CDR disc’s.

This should probably be in a more general thread, but does anyone know how to start a 4 or 5 series Pup which has been installed to the hard drive (full install), once you've installed a 2 series one to the same drive?

This has never worked out for me, either when I've used Grub4Dos from within a 2 series Puppy or when I've used the Legacy Grub installation from within the same.

When I run both Legacy OS 2 and Legacy OS 4 Mini on the same computer I need to modify the grub menu.Ist file Depending on which version of Legacy your using you will need to experiment with root=/dev/sda or root=/dev/hda to get both to boot on the same computer (see image)
When it comes to Grub2 I have no idea.

Konqueror is used more in Legacy for displaying files then surfing the net. General when it crashes on web pages it doesn't actually close it just pops up a message.

2 / Flash doesn't work with Opera 12.02, although it will with Opera 11.64 (which is easy to install instead).

Flash works perfectly for me running live or installed in 12.02 I've been using this version for months with no problems? Early versions of Opera 11 would crash when closing when 12 doesn't.

Legacy OS 2.1 LTS uses Flashplayer 10.3 which is the last version of Flash that works in Legacy OS 2.1 LTS.

Here's part of my menu.lst from this old P3....full installs of 2 series, 4 series and 5 series.And Vector.

Legacy Grub though Grub4dos will use the same.
The obvious difference is that the older kernels in the 2 series use "hda" while 4 and 5 series use "sda".

Thanks fior the info John (and concerning the grub entries too). I don't know why I'm unable to run Flash in Opera 12 but it's very consistent in Legacy and Opera 11.64 doesn't have the same problem - I've no idea why this is.

In my setting (see below) it crashes while trying to load a(ny) page without any informative error. There is a "Failed to execute m4" and then crash on address <HEX> with nothing informative on this address (non-ASCII). Starting minimal, no difference.

Other than that it runs pretty nice considering the setup.

In this emulator only ttuuxxx's 2.14 was able to run but with considerably more problems, so it would be nice to have some browser because Konqueror can hardly manage.
What about seamonkey 1.x or firefox 3.x? Any of those tested in Legacy 2.1?

Opera 11.64 is available from the main Opera website. I can't link to it at the moment because I'm in Wary 5.3 and have turned off Javascript to save system resources, but I will in an hour or two.







I've tried various versions of Firefox and Seamonkey extensively in
Legacy and none of them work; they all segfault when loading. I don't know why. The last one of John's distros I was able to get Firefox working in was Teenpup 2009, and that was the early version supplied with it (Firepup, which is based on Firefox 1.5).

(Edit; just for fun, I loaded up Teenpup 2009 and installed Opera 5 in it, which I'm posting from now. You probably wouldn't want to use it (Opera 5) - for one thing, I couldn't find any way to "zoom in" and make the text in an editing box bigger - but it still works, despite having been released as long ago as February 2001. (It was the first "free" version of Opera, and was supported by adverts displayed prominently near the top of the window to the right of, but just below, the menu bar).

You're welcome, but as for using Opera 10; nothing wrong with it, but my machine's a Pentium III (as you can see from my sig) and Opera 11 still works pretty well on it.



Opera files aren't very big downloads, so it's easy to try different ones and see which you like best.
