Puppy Can't see iPhone 4 or Samsung Note 3

#1 Post by Blackfish »

I'm running Precise Puppy 5.7.1 from USB stick on a Dell Latitude D531.

As much as I love my Puppy, there's stuff he just can't do.

He can't see the pictures on my iPhone 4. He's completely useless with iPhone 4, matter of fact.

He's completely useless with Samsung Note 3, too. Can't see pictures, files, nothing.

Poor Pup.

Those are both specialised devices, which require specialised applications to interface with a personal computer ... regardless of operating system.

It would have been less presumptive on your part if you had asked what applications could be used under Puppy Linux ... or maybe even searched this forum for such applications, yourself. Then you could have found:

For the Galaxy Note - Media Transfer Protocol
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=91442

For the iPhone - gtkpod 2.0.2
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=59183
gtkpod probably needs to be updated for the iPhone 4, but will be soon.

Yes. It sees the folders, but not the contents.

I don't really give a rip about the iPhone. I am weaning myself off that thing and switching to the Android. I'd like to have that working, for sure, if possible.

Anyway, once the Samsung device is plugged into the computer, it says:
"Unable to find software on your computer that can recognize your device. Service Pack 3, Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, for Windows XP or Android File Transfer for Mac OS must be installed.

You can download and install Kies on your computer from http://www.samsung.com/kies in order to sync data with our device, back up data, and upgrade your device (Wndows and Mac are supported)."

It's all greek to me, but it looks like I might be able to get somewhere with something here! Workin' on it!

The contents are only accessable via Media Transfer Protocol. Did you miss my previous post?

Hi @Blackfish

Actually, couple months ago, members in Puppyland developed, not one, but 2 solutions for smartDevice cable connections to a modern PUP. The members were @01Micko AND @Can8V. Both of the these PETs give full access to content which can be moved into and out of the smartDevice. 01Micko's solution certainly will work with a Slacko PUP, while Can8V's should cover, also, a broad range of PUPs.

See the first link that @Tempestuous provided in his earlier post. Either solution provided in that link should meet the needs you request in this thread.

Here to help

Samsung Galaxy has the same message when plugged into my new 2014 auto... so not just a puppylinux issue. with those links given both iphone4 ( before replacement ) and newest Samsung Galaxy phone both work fine.. so fine that other linuxes seem to have more problems with both. Puppylinux and those pets list before work nicely.
I am posting from my phone now...

Did not miss your post. I am reading all the material to understand it.

It's all new to me.

And thank you, very much.

Here's a screenshot taken with my "Samsung Galaxy tab-2 10.1" [running Android-4.0 methinks] connected to a USB socket on my 2012 desktop PC when running "Slacko-5.5.91".
I believe I have Can8V's program installed here.
The Xfe window auto-launched to display the files on the tablet.

Yes, this is a place where Puppy could be more user friendly and obvious than Windows but isn't. When you plug a a "thing that connects to the USB that may have some files on it" onto the USB, ideally, a new little icon should come up in the lower left of the screen for you to click on. Clicking on the icon should pop up the "files thing" for you to look at files and drag and drop etc.

Unfortunately, things that use the MTP interface are not handled in the same way. For cameras, there is gtkam or pupcamera which don't quite work the same as the icon. Given that the thing you want to get files from is sort of like a camera, you may try which ever of those is on your system to see if it can do MTP with the phone.

I have a Samsung Soul phone. It has three settings: Samsung PC Studio, media player and storage device. Puppy 412 is the only puppy that works with all three settings. PC studio for internet connection, media player for the camera and storage device for storage. Later puppies only work in PC studio mode for the internet. Can't access the camera or storage.

One of the problems that surfaces from this thread is the confusion that users using Puppy Linux have, now that handhelds and smartDevices have become prevalent in society. Many of us have them, and soon, everyone will have one. The work produced by both, @Can8V and @01Micko, have not as of yet surfaced in ANY distro released or built since they completed their PETs. While, at the current time, we all understand the need.

Let's hope that future distro developers, whom almost every one of them owns a smartDevice, will begin to incorporate MTP built-in, OOTB, without users wondering.

If it was easy, I know, it would be a slam-dunk. But, there are, at least 1, additional issue that I am aware of that remains: what to do about current wired webcam and USB camera stuff in PUPs and the drag-along confusion it presents in today's climate of wire devices that our PUPs talk to? One approach may be to add MTP support versus the partial implementations they currently use. But, other options may be more appropriate.

Hope this is helpful in understanding current positions

On a completely different take on this subject of data transfer with smartDevices! (in fact, this is worthy of a new thread unto itself, but I start the idea here.)
  • SAMBA! Has anyone else added a SAMBA server or client on any Handheld. The "app store providers" will usually call this "SAMBA something ..." or they will call it "...File Share...". In any event, some/many of these products allow Wifi connections to your LAN PCs in the same way as PCs do (of course the UI is different for a touch screen, but functionally these behave the same way). Using this approach, depending on which you choose, you can read-write from your smartDevice OR you can, both, read-write AND SHARE from your smartDevice. In either case, you give your smartDevice a means to participate without the use of wired USB while gaining the exact same ability provided by the data transfer ability of the wired MTP approach we have been discussing on this thread. The primary gain in using SAMBA, is that the USB wire is eliminated ... totally allow full access to your smartDevice's filesystem's content, media, etc., securely.

Maybe time for a new thread or a need to add a new post to the existing full-SAMBA "on Puppy Linux" thread we have. Remember, full-SAMBA v4.xx has been built with the proper protocols and knowledge of smartDevices, so for your PUP PCs, look for this full-SAMBA version for Puppy Linux. It is currently the smaller than the old V3 implementation for sharing available for PUPs with a whole world of users who have knowledge of full-SAMBA to help with ANY connection issues.
Hope this helps

nic007:

You may wish to try the MTP Connect pet package. It also requires go-mtpfs (I believe it's in the same post). It's somewhere in the forum boards. I was able to get my Kindle Fire connected that way for storage purposes. The cam is a different animal.

I hope this helps!

Thanks anyway, to everyone who tried to help, but I'm afraid I am inept. Most of this stuff you guys are talking about is way up over my head. I'm a bad Pup!

Anyway, I will keep reading and trying to figure this stuff out.

Meantime I can still get all my work done, so all is not lost.

Don't get lost in the development discussion.
Just install go-mtpfs-20130628.pet from here -

I'm sorry. I should have included the links. If you plug in your tablet and still don't see it, use the Filemanager which is usually in the Menu --> Filesystem of the desktop. Mine has Rox-Filer but there are others.

Then, arrow up (green arrow on top) and click on the mnt section. It should show up there.

I have puppy precise 5.7.1 as well and it connects to my iphone 5 just fine. When I connect my phone, a window pops up, I don't use that first window. I have to tap on "trust pc" on my phone first and after that a second window pops up. That second window is what I click on to access my phone. The first and second window have two different device address. Not sure what the difference is between iphone 4 and 5.

I assume the popped up windows you mention here are on the PC. So the routine is:

1-Plug in the phone
2-close the window on the PC that pops up
3-click the trust the PC on the phone
4-click something on the new window on the PC

I downloaded the files and they are in the download manager. I went to open them and it asks me which program I should use to open the files.

Which program should I use to open the files?

I can't find how to open the files.

I've also gone to get OpenOffice. I've downloaded that file as well. Can't open that one either.

I do a ton of writing. I need to be able to use fonts that aren't in .abw or in OpenOffice, particularly Courier New. Can different fonts be added to the programs?
