Install the new v28 version manually, before you retrieve the old version's profile directory, then install the new version with a completely clean installation.

I am pretty sure I'd mess up the whole thing, this is why I always used the installer. I am just going to use the current version which I have installed as long as I can without any problems. Looking for alternatives already.

I don't know why would they remove the installer when it was working perfectly, even if the new version would update itself. At-least let the installer be used to install/update to latest version.

There's nothing to it (even I can do it! ).

Just download the tarball from here, making sure you choose the correct version for your OS (32 bit or 64 bit), then extract it over your existing Palemoon directory, normally to be found in "/opt".

If you're replacing the directory with another one of identical name, it shouldn't affect any existing menus, desktop links, or launch buttons you have set up.

Though in this one case it sounds like, before updating to version 28.0.0, you firstly need to copy your existing config directory, to be found at "~/.moonchild productions", to a different safe location (possibly also do the same with the Palemoon directory to avoid having to find and download it again if needed). Otherwise you'd never be able to revert to a 27.x.x version with all your personal settings intact if you ever wanted or needed to.

Note that the browser needs to be closed while performing any of the above copying operations.

Whole process only takes a couple of minutes!

yes it is easy......I renamed /opt/palemoon to /opt/palemoon-27

then downloaded the tarball extracted to /opt and that's it.

all the menu and defaultbrowser icon work still.

I didn't even save/copy the /root/.moonchild productions

the installer program will not work anymore and is deprecated

That worked ! Backed up the profile but it didn't need restoring. And it now has an update button in the about palemoon window. So will it update using that in the future or would I need to download and extract the tarball whenever a new update gets released?

The problem is I can see that the new version uses a slightly different profile library - fewer the number of files - so I think the intaller script for the old version is no longer good for the newer version.

No, you'd only ever need to restore that backed up profile if you ever decided, for any reason, to revert to version 27, since from version 28 onwards, as I understand it, the "profile format" has been changed.
That was just a one-off, peace of mind, measure, in case you come across any bugs or sites the new version doesn't want to play nicely with, sadly not unheard of in the world of browser updates!

I usually open 40-50 tabs at once: palemoon 28.0.0 is much slower than 27.9.4. I have an old celeron cpu with 1,5 Gb of RAM. However palemoon is faster than current firefox.

You could argue, but it is unnecessary because the article does not give any concrete details. The more unnecessary imaginations and vague references to Firefox being played by the big brother and searching for it in your private life.
We do not ask for imagination, but only actual, concrete things, mistakes and their exact description of articles.
You should know the virtues of each browser and its possible mistakes, and having this in mind, you should use them properly.

No backi, can't say I've found it noticeably slower, but then, having run it for a couple of days, can't say I've found any advantage from having installed this update either!

28.0.0 (32-bit) "just works" for me.
And it's working better than version 24 did [which would eventually freeze Youtube video, and I had to copy the url to "Slimjet" to play the video].

Oh that's very odd; I just get the "loading" circle then after a little while a transparent message on the video screen telling me "If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device."
32 bit here also.

Have tried thus far in Xenial 7.09 and Slacko 5.70, two extremes, with same result. Will now go and update a Tahr's and a Precise's Palemoon to make absolutely certain.

Strange thing is Twitter videos play just fine as they do on 27.9, which has often been a problem with older Palemoon versions running on older Puppies.
