That worked ! :D Backed up the profile but it didn't need restoring. And it now has an update button in the about palemoon window. So will it update using that in the future or would I need to download and extract the tarball whenever a new update gets released?

The problem is I can see that the new version uses a slightly different profile library - fewer the number of files - so I think the intaller script for the old version is no longer good for the newer version.

Yes! use that button...you will not need to download the next tarball ....

Yes, the separate updater program is now obsolete for the new palemoon

No, you'd only ever need to restore that backed up profile if you ever decided, for any reason, to revert to version 27, since from version 28 onwards, as I understand it, the "profile format" has been changed.
That was just a one-off, peace of mind, measure, in case you come across any bugs or sites the new version doesn't want to play nicely with, sadly not unheard of in the world of browser updates!

The newest version of Palemoon seems to require some high demands for hardware.
I hope they are not going down the same hardware road as Firefox.
Latest release: 28.0.0
Pale Moon is specifically optimized for current-day processors and as such requires a reasonably modern system to run properly.

A modern Linux distribution. The browser may not work well on old or LTS releases of Linux.
A modern processor (must have SSE2 support as the absolute minimum).
1GB of RAM (2GB or more recommended for heavy use).
GTK+ v2.24
GLib 2.22 or higher
Pango 1.14 or higher
libstdc++ 4.6.1 or higher

I usually open 40-50 tabs at once: palemoon 28.0.0 is much slower than 27.9.4. I have an old celeron cpu with 1,5 Gb of RAM. However palemoon is faster than current firefox.

Firefox users would benefit from reading in detail the following link:

You could argue, but it is unnecessary because the article does not give any concrete details. The more unnecessary imaginations and vague references to Firefox being played by the big brother and searching for it in your private life.
We do not ask for imagination, but only actual, concrete things, mistakes and their exact description of articles.
You should know the virtues of each browser and its possible mistakes, and having this in mind, you should use them properly.

Been using it since yesterday and everything seems to be working fine, except the downthemall extension.

Anyone found a way to get YouTube videos working?

Otherwise it's back to 27.9, I'm afraid! :(

No backi, can't say I've found it noticeably slower, but then, having run it for a couple of days, can't say I've found any advantage from having installed this update either!

28.0.0 (32-bit) "just works" for me. :D
And it's working better than version 24 did [which would eventually freeze Youtube video, and I had to copy the url to "Slimjet" to play the video].

Oh that's very odd; I just get the "loading" circle then after a little while a transparent message on the video screen telling me "If playback doesn't begin shortly, try restarting your device."
32 bit here also.

Have tried thus far in Xenial 7.09 and Slacko 5.70, two extremes, with same result. Will now go and update a Tahr's and a Precise's Palemoon to make absolutely certain.

Strange thing is Twitter videos play just fine as they do on 27.9, which has often been a problem with older Palemoon versions running on older Puppies.

The result of my Palemoon v28 test:
old and very old pc = Palemoon v27.9.4 or v26 series
new modern pc = Palemoon v28 series

From release notes.

So, people having issues.
What is your hardware?

My old pc:
3 Ghz dual core CPu
1.5GB RAM
+ 128MB RAM NVidia card (the video ram integrated into the card)
V28-Palemoon's normal web browsing ok, only youtube is a problem.
Youtube html5 playback starts, it works fine for some time, but after a while, it starts freezing.
Palemoon browser replacement, v27.9.4 I do not have this problem.

In xenialpup 64, the updater doesn't work anymore for palemoon, too bad :(.
"the latest version number could not be retrieved."
I installed the version 28.0.0 manually by unzipping to /opt . Good news : it is much faster than the previous version. I will update my benchmark results later.

@bigpup

That's the irony, I've just been forced to go out and buy a (to me) monster, sparkling, state-of-the-art, machine with 4 GB RAM, dual-core processor, and with all the bells and whistles, after my old faithful Optiplex GX270 (that's the one with the notoriously dodgy motherboard) 1.5 GB, P4, antique workhorse, which I've been nursing along for close on 10 years, finally died last weekend.

Think that should be able to cope with a Palemoon update! :D

I get the "failed to find version number" issue as well. is that a permanent thing or have they just incorporated updates into the software?
