#391 Post by zagreb999 »

To Mr. 666philb

Thank you !
Your Tahrpup is the best OS
I have ever seen!
I think it would be much better
with XFCE...

All functions work great...
Congratulations!!!
---------------------------------
But:
File Wine pet from your
repository and all others does not work...
Regards.

666philb said thanks re the need for kernels for use with rc1 and the seamonkey firefox.desktop collision.

You are welcome.

Thanks for the follow-through and fixes.

This could be considered normal Puppy behavior.
With a built-in cd drive, the "sr0" icon does not show until a cd is inserted.
If the cd is mounted, and then unmounted, the cd is ejected and the "sr0" disappears.

@gyro
I can confirm the behaviour you observe in tahrpup-5.8.3 and if I recall correctly, all the recent pups I have used (all slacko based).

I have also observed that if an empty cd/dvd is in the built in drive, sr0 is not seen either. For a while I thought many of my cds were defective.

Kernel swap query - intel graphics

#395 Post by peebee »

Hi

Tahr Pup 5.8.3.rc1 with k.3.14.11pae works fine on my HP550 laptop with Intel graphics....

Slacko6-Beta2 with k3.4.94-nopae also works fine....

However if I swap the kernel in Slacko6-Beta2 by copying the vmlinuz and zrdv files from the 3.14.11 kernel pack kindly provided by 666philb into my frugal install directory, renaming the zdrv file appropriately:

the system boots and runs OK but on bootup I get an "almost black" screen with a very dim desktop which needs me to press the Fn-f8 button on my laptop to bring it to usable brightness.

There is therefore some sort of dependency in the graphics handling which gets messed up if I change Slacko to a different kernel - just wondering if anybody knows what the problem might be and how it might be fixed.

Thanks
PeeBee

@peebee
I think there is s conflict of colours in the splash screen and the boot.msg.

Open the splash screen - logo.16 in mtpaint. what are the colours indexed 0 and 7?
Open boot.msg in geany. What are the 2 lines with the text something like:
0aJust wait 5 seconds for normal startup!07

Hi BK

This is a manual frugal install to disk so I never see the splash screen - it doesn't even get copied out of the iso.

The system boots to the desktop - its just that the desktop is so dim that there is only a very faint image on the screen until the laptop's brightness function key is pressed.

Thanks for your advice.
Cheers

hi peebee,

i've just tried booting the slacko beta with tahrs kernel on my netbook and it booted to a bright desktop. i've no idea why it isn't for you.... have you tried the other kernels 3.14.13 & 3.15 to see if they do the same.

hi Revolverve,
evince should be set to be the default pdf viewer in tahrpup 5.8.3.rc1
although by setting it the way i have... you can't use the defaults chooser to change it.

you need to edit /root/Choices/MIME-types/application_pdf to this

Code: Select all

#! /bin/sh
exec defaultpdfviewer "$1"
fix in quickpet thanks

TahrPup is using an older xdg generator.

TahrPup-5.8.3.rc1

Code: Select all

# grep xdg_puppy /root/.packages/woof-installed-packages
xdg_puppy-0.7.6-15-binaries_only-p4|xdg_puppy|0.7.6-15-binaries_only-p4||BuildingBlock|328K||xdg_puppy-0.7.6-15-binaries_only-p4.pet||essential XDG utilities developed by rarsa, binary executables only, /etc/xdg and /usr/share/desktop-directories moved to Woof|puppy|4||
Slacko-5.7.0

Code: Select all

# grep xdg_puppy /root//.packages/woof-installed-packages
xdg_puppy_jwm-0.7.6-16-i486|xdg_puppy_jwm|0.7.6-16-i486||BuildingBlock|24K||xdg_puppy_jwm-0.7.6-16-i486.pet||essential XDG utilities developed by rarsa, binary executables only, /etc/xdg and /usr/share/desktop-directories moved to Woof|puppy|4||
This is the reason for TahrPup to fail setting the height of the menuitems using /usr/sbin/menumanager or /usr/local/jwm_config/menu

"Overheating"

#404 Post by peebee »

An "overheating" problem with k3.14.11 was reported over at:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 833#799833

I saw the same thing today when I left my laptop on for some period of time.

The culprit seems to be "khubd" which runs at c.100% cpu....see top output screenie and solid red cpu activity monitor

Searching on google seems to suggest that this is (has been?) a known problem but the reports are all pretty ancient.

Cheers

Just a data point, no issues at all running with the 3.15.4 kernel in LxPup 14.09. That's my 'go to' kernel as It has the patches to allow the forcepae kernel parameter for Pentium M CPUs. Cool as the proverbial cucumber with idle CPU use < 3% on my 1.6G Pentium M laptops.

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Are you guys sure that the new kernel is to blame for the overheating?

I thought so for a similar problem with pemasu's raring pup, until I found
out that the power supply unit needed to be changed on a +/- 10-years
old computer.

Simply opening the power supply and cleaning it are hard to do and only
partially solve the problem. I bought a new 450 W one for $45 CDN: three
of its sides are meshed and it has a bigger fan, so it cools the inside of
the box as well. Haven't had an overheating problem since, even on the
newer pups.

Just a thought.

BFN.

@666philb
Regarding http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... &start=300
and beta 3 review

Well, a quick test of rc1 shows:
no change for ntfs-3g, openssl, lxandr etc.
overlooked?

Thanks,

P.S. In next build could you kindly provide a non PAE iso.

hi live,

lxrandr is in there ... shows up as 'monitor settings' in the system menu.
openssl i forgot! i've just uploaded the .pet and it will be in the next tahrpup http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... i-i686.pet
EDIT: will be sticking with the ubuntu version. even though it's version f it's been patched. updated version was showing errors

i'm not going to update ntfs3g as it's not something i want to mess with at this stage when the ubuntu one is working fine.
i will be doing a retro non PAE iso eventually :) ...see post below

concerning the file associations you posted about previously

.m4a & .m4b
.opus
.ogg if audio codec is opus
.flac
.eac3

any that aren't working, could you right click on them and choose 'set run action'
and post the /root/Choices/MIME-types/blahblah ....info (in the drop suitable application here window)

thanks
