Installed perl-base_5.18.2-2ubuntu1_i386.deb of the UBUNTU, then the PPLOG works.

FYI

A new 'huge' style kernel is posted at http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/huge_kernels/

These can be used in woof with the new 3builddistro-Z from the 'testing' branch.

The one for tahr (built in tahr) is huge-3.12.22-tahr-PAE-i686.tar.bz2.

For more info read woof-CE/kernel-kit/README and woof-CE/README-FIRST.

hi 01micko,

what are the advantages of a huge kernel build?

hi shinobar,
i had some huge permissions problems on my precise install, caused by doing something silly and i think it has affected the entire partition.... and possibly affected the woof build.

the new build is done on a newly formatted partition and from a freshly downloaded slacko so i'll be interested to see if those permission oddities are still there

Many thanks 666philb, very nice indeed!

Epson Stylus DX5050 wouldn't work after CUPS at first, so I rebooted (with no save), installed gstoraster_s533-9.05.pet (thanks rcrsn51) and ran CUPS again, and the printer worked just fine.

''Loading Drivers needed to access disks'' on boot-up is very fast indeed - faster than any other Puppy I've tried!

For some reason my drives are labeled as ''sdb1, sdb5, sdb7 and sdc1,'' instead of ''sda1, sda5, sda7 and sdb1.''

I did a frugal install to the hard drive, and while selecting Tahr from the Grub4Dos boot menu boots into Tahr, it doesn't seem to be finding the savefile - that's the main issue I am having so far with my installation.

Tahrpup 5.8.1.5
built with woof c.e. testing
includes all fixes from thread so far
save to folder
swapped pidgin for xchat
links in first post

This is a completely fresh build with freshly compiled kernel, hopefully fixing the permission oddities of the last build.

cups grrrr, i tried this fix here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153924 and it worked for me straight away on my old tahr install. so i included it in this build and the printer still wasn't seen!!. A combination of rebooting and replugging in the printer got it recognized eventually. Frustrating but some progress.

things to do...
the next release will probably have the 3.14 kernel, as my test build is running noticeably faster on my net book. and also any new woof developments.

I deleted the save file and created a new one, and it's loading this one without any problem. Very Happy

PostPosted: Wed 18 Jun 2014, 17:56    Post subject: Tahr Puppy boots extremely fast in a QEMU guest

It took me all of 4 minutes, total, to both download TahrPUP5815, and boot TahrPUP in a VM guest (setup instructions here). Namely, 90seconds download to my folder and 75seconds to boot TahrPUP; all while my main PUP distro continues to run on the same PC.

After resolving a X desktop problem, I rebooted first, defining video for use with the VM guest and arriving at desktop and "FirstRUN". Set localization and redefinded the desktop to 1028X768,

Problem
After JWM setup this system is NOT showing its IP address when I hover over (mouse-over) the taskbar icon. Slacko has this built-in, but, for some reason it is missing in this distro.

System is stable.

Printer working and drives now labeled correctly in 5.8.1.5.

Frugal install, same issue with the save file first time I shut down. I select the option to create the save file in a folder, then the computer creates it in /mnt/home.

Whereas after a reboot and creating a save file again (and deleting the first one), it creates it in /mnt/home/tahr5.8.1.5frugal.

(I didn't think of copying the original save file into the folder to see if that would work, at the time)

My IP address is also not showing in mouse-over.

I seem to have created a ''save folder'' when I thought I was creating a save file. This seems like a neat feature that I haven't come across before in Puppy.

Hello @Al1000

A "save-folder" means you will NEVER hit the space problem that has plagued users of save-files for years in Puppyland. (Unless, of course, you fill the partition that the directory resides....unlikely for most Linux users).

Hope this helps

PostPosted: Wed 18 Jun 2014, 20:01    Post subject: CUPS problem

Good job, 666philb!
Thar Pup 5.8.1.5:
The permssion of /var/tmp is 755, which should be 777 or 1777.

BTW, the CUPS has the same problem as i posted on the slacko alpha topic:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=784132#784132
1. Installed epson_inkjet_printer_escpr-1.4.0.pet (my printer is Epson EP-704A)
2. Ran CUPS. Under Add Printer, select AppSocket/JetDirect.
3. On the next screen, delete "socket" and type "parallel:/dev/usb/lp0"
4. Tried printing test page from the web interface. Nothing the printer do.
5. The Web interface says "Unable to open device file "/dev/usb/lp0": Permission denied"

Same problem with the Tahr Pup 5.8.0.8, 5.8.1.5, and the Slacko-5.9.1.
No problem with the Slacko 5.7, nor the Precise Puppy 571JP.

Another Japanese Forum member reported no problem with USB connected printer but problem with the network printer.
Somewhat depends on the hardware?
