Stream youtube video when you have an old browser

Youtube use an html5 player to play their videos. Older browsers will not be capable. However you can still view/stream the videos using your distribution's default media player.

Method 1: For VLC player download attached zip file and extract to /usr/lib/vlc/lua/playlist. Copy your video url to clipboard > open vlc > right-click in video window and choose Open Media and then Open Network > paste the youtube video url (if it's not there altready) and click play OR after copying the video url to clipboard just do ctrl+v and enter in VLC. You only need the standard video url for this method so you don't even need a big browser (html only browser to get the url sufficient).

Method 2: Any default player should work > Go to a youtube download site eg. https://youtubemultidownloader.net, https://y2mate.com/, https://getvideo.at/en/ > Copy and paste the youtube video url into the url box > right-click on the mp4 download link of your choice and select one of the "open in" options. Your default media player should play the video in your browser via its browser plugin. You can also copy this download url to clipboard and play with VLC. This method 2 is more likely to work because it's the original google download link. If the google link does not work for you try this site: https://www.savethevideo.com/ and use the alternative download link provided.

I'm using Slacko 5.6 and Opera 11.64. So let's see how this works.

No VLC here.
None of the VLC pets I downloaded worked. The one that comes closest is https://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/p ... slacko.pet, a 25.9MB package. Interface opens but it's unable to play any videos in any format. MP3 audio works. I give up on VLC.

That's not possible with an old Opera: "Unable to complete secure transaction".

I tried some other download sites. First a site that worked very well for me until recently (http://youtubemultidownloader.xyz). No HTTPS and not even javascript. Now I'm greeted with "Services for this domain have been discontinued". These sites come and go. Hard to believe that they are built on solid legal grounds. And the other sites I tried may be more accessible than https://youtubemultidownloader.net but in the end all use the same back services, which again require a working HTTPS connection. End of the line for Opera

[Edit] As of today this works for me:
1) Copy youtube URL to clipboard
2)Make sure that JavaScript is turned off
3) Go to site https://keepvid.works, paste URL into field and press Download button
4) The page will refresh with a screenshot of the video and additional download buttons. The button next to the screenshot ("Download HD Video") works, the additional MP3 options don't.

Keeping JavaScript on will result in annoying popups and will make this site unusable.
Since your topic is "stream" and not download I also tried to feed the long URL leading to the video (https://r1---sn-un57en7l.googlevideo.com/videoplayback....) to my browser. The media player interface appears but streaming does not start.

Yes, a very old browser which can't open https sites will be a problem. The savethevideo.com site as mentioned will give an alternative link on their own servers so that will always almost work but the process is a bit slower. This should work with VLC.

Opera can access the site but the download button does nothing. No links. I suspect incompatible JS

https://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter works with my old Opera 12 and also https://y2mate.com/ which is actually better.

Worked for me too. Exactly once. To convert a video to mp3. For consecutive URLs the "Your video is being processed!" overlay stays at 0%.

and also https://y2mate.com/ which is actually better.

The links *seem* not to work. I can see "Downloading from..." in the status bar but nothing happens. It's faster to copy the addresses from the buttons and paste the links into Opera's "Quick download" field.

Bottomline: There are online download services that work with old browsers but streaming with old browsers (or - to be correct - with their plugins) remains a challenge.

Open VLC, right-click downoad link and copy to clipboard, back at VLC crtl+V and enter, easy. Sites that offer alternative link (other than google) always work for me this way (unless there's something wrong with the video which happens). Opening the link in your standalone mediaplayer (not its browser plugin) has its advantages, eg. You can change different sizes, apply effects, etc.

Did you download the lua file I posted (you may need it for download from googles servers)? I use Tahr's VLC, no problems.

Yes, I downloaded and installed the lua file but of course this has no effect when VLC itself is not functional. I like VLC and your approach - if it works - sounds interesting but first I need a functional VLC.

My VLC is version 2.1.6, the Tahr6.0.5 default. Method 2 always works for me, method 1 sometimes not (the google link that is). Method 2 should work with any mediaplayer especially if you stream an alternative download link

Unfortunately it does not. You already mentioned that in your initial post: "you can still view/stream the videos using your distribution's default media player."

My distribution's default media player is gnome-mplayer. Refuses to stream.

Does it refuse to stream an alternative download link (not google playback). If not, it's crap, get something else. Just checked Mplayer with old Seamonkey. The browser plugin worked but pasting into the standalone player doesn't. VLC is a better option.

Hi Mochi, I almost never use VLC but I did make a VLC-210 "NoDeps" pet some time ago which i occasionally use on my banksy3 "non-persistence" version of Slacko 5.6
I don't remember the source of the original pet or any mods I may have done to it, but if it is of any use for testing purposes it is here:

Using method 1 I was able to view a YT video in VLC but had copious certificate errors that I had to push through ("accept for 24 hours"). Something to do with my ssl or CA certs I guess.

I did not try streaming the output from VLC to somewhere else.

Sounds scary but works great OOTB. I had to click away 3 of those "Insecure site" dialogs but then VLC streamed the YT URL.

As an additional bonus I expect that videos streamed this way are free of nagging commercials. I still have to see but if so then this method would be an interesting option even for users of a modern browser.

I get none of these dialog errors you are talking about. Just works. Why would you get commercials, these are direct download links for the video on the server? Doesn't make sense to me.

Think youtube changed some code.....so could no longer stream youtube vids with Vlc .
What works for me is the newest Version of Smplayer/Smtube .

If you install an Addon for Palemoon or Firefox called "Open with" configure it to play Youtube ( and some other sites ) Video/Links directly with a right click Mouse-Menu on the (appropriate ) Youtube site to play with Smplayer instead of Flash-Player .
For Palemoon 27.x.x you have to install Open with Version 5.6.3.1
cause newer Versions maybe do not install .....but not sure for Palemoon 28.1.

Thanks backi, I've set it to open with mpv and works fine.
(needs python though, to complete installation, needs to run a python script)
Open with vlc sort of works also , but video play is stuttering for me.

(sorry, a bit off-topic, I'm not using old browser, new firefox here)

This Procedure does not work (for me) any longer with Vlc Player .
Neither in Bionic Dog (Vlc3.01) nor in Xenial Dog (Vlc 2.8 ) nor in Deb Dog Stretch(Vlc 3.0.1).A Few weeks ago Vlc worked flawless til youtube changed the code again. So i am wondering why Vlc-Player still works for you .
But it is not important for me as long Smplayer does work this way ........it is quite handy to stream Youtube Videos (mostly Music) in Background with Smplayer while surfing the Web......and less resource hungry so i think .Prefer Smplayer over Mpv-Player because integrated Equalizer and Extra-Stereo Effect
(in Audio >Filter>Extrastereo ) in Smplayer gives quite a good Soundquality with Headphones .
