How to connect wifi with only the name and shared key?

#1 Post by kispest »

Hello,
I'm sorry but I just could not find any safe method to connect with a wifi in a store or cultural center where they give me the name and the shared key but not the ESSID or the type of enryption. Meanwhile my not too new cellular phone asks for the name and the key and that's it. Is there a quick way of connecting like that under Puppy Linux?
(If there is no enryption, like at a McDonald's, this is not a problem.)

Thanks a lot in advance.

ESSID (Extended service set identification) = name

If you don't know the encryption-type, use trial and error. Start with WPA2, if that fails try WPA, if that fails try WEP.

Thanks, tempestuous. Of course I tried all enryption types, one after the other, and I also filled the ESSID field as name but it still did not work.

Since my desktop is connected with the router via cable, the connection is automatic. The problem arises only when I want to use the laptop in the other room. And when I have foreign guests, they usually want to use their own machines with the wifi.

From your response I figure that there is no special program that could connect the easy way (like mobile phones do). It's a pity.

Use Frisbee for wire;ess.

If you are using your phone then it is the same deal.

Frisbee shows up all networks....in 10 >> 15 seconds.

Select your network...type in your key.

Exactly the same as the phone.
Cannot be simpler.

Most telcos put the keys etc underneath the modem...
at least here in OZ.

Thanks a lot, cthisbear. I downloaded slacko 5.7 (non-PAE), and it included Frisbie. Using that everything was fast and easy.

A question now: is this latest version enough or, for safety's sake, shall I keep the older Puppy Linux CDs as well? In general, I feel getting lost in the jungle of versions. Which one do you really suggest for a used laptop, with
not a huge HDD?

Mate I run all sorts of old puppies.
From cds...usbs etc.

I don't worry too much about it.

I always run the firewall...very easy in Puppy.

If you have an installed pup....
clear the browser history and cache before shutting down.

Some old Pups have been refreshed...aka Puppy Lucid.

I do internet banking first...then email, news etc.
I always close each bank site and clear history etc as above.
Then do other browsing.

Some Pups have browser addons for extra safety.

Now that you are on air, can you please modify your post so others
may benefit if they have the same problem..

How to connect wifi with only the name and shared key?- Solved

Cheers .... Chris.
