5.8.8: 3.13.1
6.0 alpha: 3.12.22
So Why...?

When I recommend to remove a old Graphics (useless):

apm,ark,ast,chips,Cirrus,Mach64,MGA,Neomagic,S3,Savage,Tdfx,Trident,SiS,v4l,Voodoo - Because that's is only at 32bit. (not 64bit. - Main at 64bit Graphics is: Intel,AMD,Nvidia)

And Add to a Wacom drivers (Some users haves a Tablet Graphics) or a Replace to Midori from Firefox. [Lightest web Browser]

So any way I can be removing about a ePDFview... (Firefox/Chromium haves a HTML5 PDF Reader...) or Whatever no one at a Minimalist can be use a Sylpheed (All web browsers can be read at a E-Mail...) or a Transmission (I prefer from URL/FTP)

And a Second Question about a .sfs Lite make:

PostPosted: Tue 01 Jul 2014, 09:06    Post subject: Fatdog kernel

Hello 01micko

I noticed that fatdog had built a new kernel. So I thought,"why not stick it in slacko64 and see what happens?"

It actually works. That's amazing!

Code:
-Version-
Kernel      : Linux 3.15.2 (x86_64)
Version      : #1 SMP Mon Jun 30 16:56:22 EDT 2014
C Library      : Unknown
Distribution      : Slacko64 Puppy - 5.9.1
-Current Session-
Computer Name      : puppypc15445
User Name      : root (root)
Home Directory      : /root
Desktop Environment      : Unknown (Window Manager: JWM)
-Misc-
Uptime      : 2 minutes
Load Average      : 0.61, 0.22, 0.08

Thanks 01micko jamesbond kirk for all this interesting stuff to play with.

Testing on Pentium D machine.

Following a pfix=ram boot, the Quick Setup option to launch the Xorg Wizard isn't working properly. On clicking the button for restarting X Server after making the settings Puppy briefly drops to the prompt as you'd expect but rather than starting the wizard it goes back to the desktop. Neither the keyboard or mouse will work however the machine is still running as the clock is working. Only way out is a hardware reset.

As with the other version of Slacko, I can't see the DeskJet 720C printer connected via parallel port in CUPS. On this version, typing modprobe ppdev in the task window returns this message:-

Code:
modprobe: FATAL: Module ppdev not found.

When loading Firefox it pops up a new tab and tries to visit http://www.%u.com/ which errors.

I think it's actually a problem with the Wizard itself - I dropped to the command line and tried to run it manually and all I got was the probing hardware message and it stopped at the prompt. The Wizard itself didn't come up.

Firewall setup wizard isn't working properly either, complains about an invalid grep option and also the absence of the Local Loopback interface - even though it's listed in Frisbee.

So did a quick test on Acer AO 722.

1. It takes a looong time until the X is reached.

Same problem on my Acer Aspire 5740G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics.

Uses the "radeon" driver.
In /var/log/messages I get an error message:
"kern.err: smc: error loading firmware "radeon/REDWOOD_smc.bin"
This firmware file is present in slacko64 5.8.8, but not in 5.9.1.
Problem does not occur in slacko64 5.8.8.

Thanks gyro,

I'll do a review of all fw and include anything that I have missed.

I am also upgrading to 3.14x kernel as this has recently gone LTS. It is supposed to increase the open source radeon driver's performance substantially negating the need for the fglrx proprietary driver. I hope that's true because that is a real PITA to compile and the legacy version simply does not build with any xorg_server >= to 1.12.4 (and I've done an extensive search for patches).

Tested on my old EEE notebook.
Works out of the box, but no noticeable speed improvements compared to 32 bit.

Understanding, you wrote:

With the KVM additions in 3.15, might you consider it? For those who may not have tried KVM I'm seeing phenomenal speed in the distros that I am booting in the VM guests.

If your processor(s) have the virtualization feature (most 64bit Intel or AMDs do), you should expect the same speedy operations in boot and running. In tests, the distros are booting and running faster in the guest than in native, bare-metal runs. With additional kernel attention it should take advantage, no matter old/new 64bit PCs/Laptops/tablets, we should expect the increased ability to service running guests. Simple writeup steps (with processor compatibility tests of your PCs) can be viewed here.

On another note ...
Am hoping that I get enough time to report on use of Slacko64-591 on the touch laptops, tonight.

HP Touch Laptop
Testing on the same touch laptop used for demos and presentations: Runs LightHouse64 most of the time.

Slacko64 exhibits the Same problem as last year. The touch on screen is not tracking with at finger's location; generally pointer is off to the left of the finger. Makes it difficult to tap accurately and to navigate pull-downs.

I may be able to test a HP Touch All-in-One desktop PC over the weekend if this will boot on an UEFI system.

Hope this helps

Mick, the slacko64-5.9.1.iso on aarnet is d/l in bytes (<391bps), I wonder if it's corrupted, may be worth blowing away and let it be re-d/l from ibiblio overnight. the devx is ok.

@gcm

In the Desktop menu did you try 'Calibrate Touchscreen'? I have no idea if it works. Also try the Puppy Theme Manager and choose one of the Stardust touch themes and in the menu section choose 'huge'. Hth.

@scsijon

Not much I can do about it. The size looks ok. Maybe aarnet is experiencing difficulties? Try internode .. physically closer to you anyway. Oh, but you're on satellite right?

yep, which is why I use aarnet as it has a direct link from the Broken Hill hub. I'll try from nluug overnight tonight while up and see what happens.

ok, it came down from nluug, but slow.

?didn't I see some package build instruction somewhere for slacko64?

I have a few for you like qt5(, a sfs if ever there was one at nearly 1gig of source), my favorite jpeg editor called mangaed(, it's really a vector editor with translation and cleanup abilities for redoing doc's with pictures) and a few other esoterics.

regards

I tested on my HP Touch Laptop (and the Theme suggestion as well to no avail) and get the following error message.
