Update: Just tried Mike lovely work actually boots with xorg 7.3 on later machine I have - that 412 doesn't do.
Hmm curious...xorg is pretty much as it came. The only change is in how its launched due to changes made for multiuser... only affect i noticed was not needing exec xwin to avoid a shutdown loop though the relationship between command prompt and X on puppy is a curious one. It may also be related to the part in xwin that throws out an xorg.conf if its not approved... again only guessing.

Hi Mike,

Would the different drivers of the different kernel be the diff???

I am very ignorant about this stuff and appreciate knowledge you impart.

Ah yes no brain today... framebuffer stuff perhaps... yes thats possible. Some cards want it, some cards hate it... slax kernel has it partially built in too...like usb modules.

Ain't dead just yet but been using Racy on my newer hardware but I missed 412 so much that I am back using it as my everyday OS. I can't put my finger on it or what it is that pulls me back to 412, but for me it just works, too well perhaps.

Anyway - 412 Collection, I have moved the hosting to Neocities which came about and was inspired by Yahoo Geocities - remember it? It only provides static hosting which is enough for 412 Collection. As a bonus http://412collection.co.uk has a mirror at http://412collection.neocities.org hopefully no one should have trouble accessing it. I have swapped the guestbook for the more up to date Disqus commenting system which will hopefully be an improvement.

Although I make use of Statcounter for the site webstats so if you have ad blocking in place ('hosts' file located in /etc) this may block access to 412 Collection so you should remove or comment out the Statcounter entry in your 'hosts' file.

mikeb I had problems running Puppy-415 on my hardware, there was no tray and I was unable to get it to appear. I did get it running fine on my Netbook, tray and all but I was unable to access the internal HD from Rox and Pmount never seen it although I did like what I saw and I am uploading it as type this and I am sure it will be of great use to others . There are packages that I would like to include on 412 Collection but I will come back to that soon. In the mean time if you have any packages that you think would be useful for 412 Collection I would love to have them.

darry1966 Many thanks for the compliments, I'm flattered. As with 'mikeb' if there are packages you think are missing or would be useful iI would love to have them. Although I will be scouring your repository for additional packages for 412 Collection.

Your help is always appreciated guys, thanks.

@Tuxtoo Hi been looking at this alsa upgrade for Puppy 4
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=45326

As I have been fiddling with a Compaq Armada e500 which has sound issues with pup 4 for some reason anyway maybe a useful edition.

Used patriots alsa update a few years ago to get a HP netbook working properly...though I doubt if it would help an older machine.
By the way I compiled the same version for 4.15. Alsa is one of those things thats nice to compile if ever an update is needed...just configure...make...make install... and nice and clean.

Hi tuxtoo... yes you mentioned that drive problem before ... not sure on that one without digging into machine details. Xfce4 taskbar?..and won't start from command prompt?... I have sometimes had odd behaviour on qemu..ie a slow machine so I guess start up timing is not quite as it should be.

darry1966, When I bought my new PC (base, no OS, Oct 2012) I could just not get the sound to work. I searched the forum and found this which I thought showed promise for my problem Alsa 1.0.22.1 Driver Updates but the files that I required were no longer available as is the case here.

In the end I bought one of these cheap External 7.1 USB Optical Audio Sound Card Adapter from ebay which gives me sound from Puppy 412.

Old Puppies with no audio : Virtualbox is the solution. Old Puppies please me a lot because they were not fast-food. I use to watch(!) them in Virtual box, sound is better than in normal usage. Shoud be a solution to link Wondows audio pilots... VM succeeds doing it. Perhaps i am a stupid newbie !
