Re: home page crumbles

#46 Post by jamesbond »

I'm sure there are others who are willing to donate cpu/server space to make a dynamic home page. I know I would.

But the github idea has its appeal too.

We can use puppylinux.info anytime for this - I mean, have the server ready, give me the DNS info and I will direct the domain to that server. (For puppylinux.com or puppylinux.org, you will have to request Barry to do this.)

I have taken the liberty to send this message to Barry K. I know he has said he does not want to be contacted but I don't know any other way to address this issue. If he does not read it on his blog maybe he will read it here. If anyone knows any way to contact Barry K please post it here.

Dear Barry K, I am sorry to bother you because I know you are retired however I have noticed that the Puppy Linux home page has not been updated in a while and this is also true of the Distrowatch page. Would it be acceptable for you to assign a few Puppy Linux members to maintain both pages ? I am afraid if this is not done many people will think that development of Puppy Linux has stopped. My personal suggestion is the Woof-CE team since they are actively developing your system, others could join them as appropriate. Once again I apologize for bothering you. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

A Puppy fan

Fork & rename ?

Puppy has been a community project for quite some time now, but if trademark/access to site is still Barry's and he doesn't take any action on the issue I guess the real solution is to choose another name and logo for puppylinux / woof and continue development with new site / domain too which will be official. Then it could be listed as new project on Distrowatch too, same way as Simplicity linux was.
It might seem drastic but I see it as only real solution for future too.
Development would go on through woof-CE (renamed) releases would still have the same unique puppy enviroment with the change of name and logo.

Sounds like a plan....but, if the community doesn't go with it...stagnation rules.

Someone needs to paint a bulls eye on their back and jut start the ball rolling. I can set up a site/domain, but we need a name.

woof

#53 Post by raffy »

woof4linux sounds good and is available.

woof is the building block, so it should be able to cover all its kid puppies.

non-woof but cousin puppies can still be featured there.

I believe that the content rather than the name is the real issue.
For example http://www.puppy-linux.org redirects to the forum but could be used without affecting the existing sites. http://www.puppy-linux.com links to nowhere but if is also registered with a "friendly" person, it could be used.

Building a new puppy home page could be done right now in the woof-CE git page that currently looks like this  . There is a simple mechanism that you can have this page shown on the address that you have secured.

You do not like woof-CE just build a site on another repo or place and then link it. There is also a Pupppy PR group that is looking for members!

A fresh install of Wordpress is at puppylinuxnews.org. [EDIT - It did not work, so back to the wiki for contributors.]

Barry K is aware......

Raffy is the main guy to make a decision, a very long-established Puppy fan and supporter, who has established his credentials over many years.

Raffy already has control over the content of puppylinux.org (as well as others, as it is a wiki).

If Raffy suggests where puppylinux.com should be redirected to, I will seriously look at that.

I can help if need be. I also have puppylinux.net and a server, plus I have dealt with Hostgater before when I released .org and BK and I co habitated All three at Hostgater for the transfer. Its a Texas based company. Moving DNS records are easy, And Hostgater seemed fine with the smooth and seemless transfers.

Good to know. Thanks.
However, as stated many times, the content is the major obstacle :(

I think lack of time to write content is a bigger obstacle. Texts don't really have to be long, as long as readers can get the information they need. I guess I could set some time to write on a regular basis, at least to get it started. Also, others could proofread to make sure the information is accurate and up-to-date.

I discussed with Raffy about what I should do with puppylinux.com.

Following that, I have created a new front page for puppylinux.com, that should clarify things for newcomers:

http://puppylinux.com/

I see in this thread that other URLs have been suggested, such as puppylinux.net, however, as always, the problem is maintenance.

puppylinux.org is there, has a lot of content, and anyone can contribute to it. It does seem logical to keep that as the main place for all things Puppy.

Regarding confusion over where Puppy is headed and just what is the latest "official" Puppy, I still seem to have a role there, as a channel, making announcements on my blog -- after receiving notification/advice from the Puppy stalwarts such as 01micko, mavrothal, Raffy, etc.

My new front page at puppylinux.com points to my blog for announcements of the "official" puppies, plus to information for developers, regarding woof-CE (the development system for creating official pups).

Puppy Linux Home Page

#63 Post by Sky Aisling »

Hello :)

Is this just me or is something happening with PuppyLinux.org?

When I attempt to access wiki from Puppy Linux Home Page I receive this message:
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /wikka on this server.
When I attempt to access PuppyLinux.org wiki from Google search I get the same message.

I use the wiki a lot.
It was working fine yesterday.
Today is 1/10/15.

The admin page of the host is also unavailable at this time. Will check again later.

UPDATE: The wikka folder was lost (!) and onsite help restored it. No explanation received as to what could have caused the loss...
