Stuff for Puppy 4.2 with kernel 2.6.21.7

#1 Post by Dominiko »

Hi. First my post on forum and... sorry for my poor english.

I'm using old Puppy because this is ONLY OS that can run on my system (P4, 2GB RAM), every other system just crash, freeze, or reset my computer, even Puppy 4.21. Weird, but, author of Puppy 4.2 save the day, but only one thing are missing here. Graphic driver. I'm blind or stupid (or both), but I can't find any .pet (I'm using full instalation of Puppy) for my version, only for never Puppys that I cant use due to my broken PC. I just only want play Diablo 2 with my friend, but Wine can't work without Direct3D (yup, I installed Direct9c and stuff), so I thing its damn driver fault.
Please, don't tell me "compile yourself", because I'm simple Windows XP user ;-) so I you can tell me with .pet give me actual graphic driver for my GF (6600 on PCI-E, or 8800GT for PCI-E, I'm using 6600 right now because this one don't have fan and I like silent) I will be very grateful!

Next thing is full featured audio player. I always use Winamp, but someday one guy from Russia made awesome player named Aimp and now on Puppy I have Alsa, but this one is no good. Without support for mayor file formats (flac [+cue], m4a, etc.) I can't listen to my music. I tried find myself a good one, maybe Clementine (Foobaar is randomly crashing) but cant find nothing for my Puppy version. Can you help?

Pozdrawiam!

edit:
I got driver, thanks to user version2013.

Hello & Welcome to the forum!

Here are some drivers for kernel 2.6.21.7, good luck!

http://web.archive.org/web/201302261600 ... om/dl.html

I guess that you want the NVIDIA-100.14.19-k2.6.21.7.pet

Code: Select all

For the new kernel (2.6.21.7) of Puppy 3.0 I have put together the set of three driver packages for nvidia cards.

nvidia-7186.pet for ancient nvidia graphics cards (riva TNT to Geforce 1).

nvidia-9643.pet for most nvidia cards (officially Gf2 to Gf4 but have tested on Gf7 OK).

nvidia-100.14.19.pet for latest cards (Gf5 to Gf8).

All available at http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/

The pet packages install modified nvidia pkg1.run files to /tmp.
After this is complete drop out of X [ ctrl alt backspace ] and at the prompt enter install_nvidia and accept the defaults.
Then run xorgwizard and test the required resolution and finally run xwin.
Some info about driver version at this link

Ok, more stuff to try if you still want to get that driver working.

In this thread there was a person (ricesteam) with the exact same problem, same video card, same driver package. He fixed it by installing the xorg-dri packages from the Petget Package Manager.

Good luck![/b]

I was going to recommend the latest 'getnvidia' package. ->

If you do not want to try that, then may I ask where you downloaded your Puppy 4.2 iso?
I may be able to help with a nvidia .pet.

@perdido

I installed xorg.xorg_full_dri-7.3 and xorg.xorg_dri-7.3-1 from Package manager, then installed nvidia driver, window with 3 options pop up and I closed this window, then go to promt, type "nvidia_install" and still command not found. I missing something probably, but - like I said before - I'm Windows user for something like 15 years... Linux is damn hard :-)
NVidia server X works, but with error window about "You do not appear to be using NVIDIA X driver, blablabla"

@version2013
I can't show you window with errors because I don't know how to grab a screen (print screen don't work with Gimp...), but window from getnvidia (from http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/opt ... ia-1.0.pet) looks like this:

Work space - OK (I'm using full instalation, plenty of space, 30GB)
devx package - NG (I don't know what it is)
Kernel source package - NG (same here)
No nouveau - OK (um, ok, but same here)
nvidia-installer - OK (so... its working? I don't know)
Internet connection - OK (well, thanks to Puppy my internet works)
Then is "stop" sign with:
You need devx package.
You have a kerner source package, but it does not match with the running kernel(linux- 2.6.21.7)

I'm lost. Totally.

I get my Puppy Linux from UNetbootin software - http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
WWW says its 4.00, software get you "latest live CD"

Here is hardware info report (if this help). Sorry for wall of text, but spoiler command don't work.

After unnistalling nvidia driver (but still with installed xorg.xorg_full_dri-7.3 and xorg.xorg_dri-7.3-1) xorg don't work... Why? Why this must be so complicated. I don't understand this.

hmm not sure about these puppy wizards but IF the pet is installing correctly and its a set of binary drivers and not the source its normally a case of

exit X to prompt

run
depmod
to be sure of registering the module then
xconfig-nvidia
to modify the xorg.config

then run exec xwin

well thats how its done with 'normal' nvidia drivers

the xorghigh might add glxgears and perhaps libGL ... been a while since I have dont it

the log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log usually tells you exactly what is wrong if it fails to launch.

hmm that pet uninstall probably removed duplicated files needed for X to work... not clever really and now you cannot run X.

As its a full install i would suggest redoing the install to get it working again.

I know that reinstall is a option but I already have latest "good" Opera (12.XX) installed with working flash (and youtube), polish language, finally mplayer with proper polish symbols in subtitles, working skype, etc. I even don't know where to finds .pets with software I need. I lost.

You can do an "upgrade" install, that will keep all your programs and settings.

1. Boot from USB or CD
2. Choose mouse
3. In Puppy Video Wizard choose Xorg
4. Choose monitor
5. Choose video mode

That gets you to puppy linux.
To do an "upgrade" install
1. Menu > Setup > Puppy Universal Installer
2. Choose where to install to (your hard drive)
3. Choose where to install to again (which hard drive)
4. Click OK to install puppy
5. Tell Installer where are the puppy files
6. After inserting media (already inserted) click OK
7. Choose "FULL" install
8. Choose "UPGRADE"

Then it says "Please wait, copying files"

Just close the next window when done, you do not need to install grub, it is already installed.

Shut down puppy, choose "Do Not Save"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now start computer and puppy boots and everything is like you had it. No need to re-do Opera or anything else.

Once again I recommend you get help from version2013 to get the Nvidia driver installed

Good Luck!

Wow, you saved my Puppy! Thanks you very, very much. Now we back to drivers topic...

edit:
But something is wrong. I can't get polish fonts to works. I can type normal polish words, even after setting everything for my country in Puppy Setup. Well...

You will have to setup for your country.

Setup > Setup Puppy > Wizard Wizard

1. Configure Puppy for your country
2. Choose your locale(font-set/money/date-format)

Window opens but is missing Poland, click "Fetch" to get more locales

Then puppy will download more locales including Poland

"Downloading locale files from ibiblio.org, please wait..."

After the download completes a new window opens with a lot of countries. Choose your country and click "OK"

Then "Choose locale: Success" window opens

Click "OKAY"

Xserver will restart so screen goes blank. You may need to reboot if it does not re-start.

If reboot then you will have to start Xwindows at prompt
type xwin and hit <enter>

After that it should be your Polish fonts, etc.

Good Luck!

Puppy full installs are a bit fragile plus mistakes can trash the system as you have discovered.

When I last used a full install I used to run the remaster script occasionally ... for me this made a backup of the current system which could be used to restore a working setup. Just one to consider.

Yes Mike, yes, but I don't have any option, I must use Puppy as my "normal OS" due to my broken PC. I tried almost 20 distros including few Puppy version, bot only this one is working on my broken PC.

Perdido, thanks, I reebot PC and now everything is working. I mean everything, but not Nvidia drivers. Damn! Running Diablo 2 (D2SE exactly) is hard like - nonen omen - hell ;-)

Option?...I was just telling you a way to backup your working 4.20 install since I realise its the only way it works for you.

Ok perhaps try the nvidia pet again and the commands... if its a no go that pet must be of the wrong type... I have puppy 4.12 and a 6200 card so very similar and its 3d works just fine. In fact it even works with the 93 series older driver from nvidia.

So, before installing .pet with nvidia drivers I should install something from package manager or not? Those xorg.xorg dri or xorg.xorg dri full, or maybe both? Because last time when I installed those xorg dri my xorg dies and xwin don't work.

edit:
Still, depmod and then xconfig-nvidia give me "command not found", exactly -sh: xconfig-nvidia "command not found".

So far, a Puppy 4.2 with kernel 2.6.21.7 that I found, is the following:
puppy-4.2retro-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso
devx_420.sfs
kernel-src-2.6.21.7-patched-puppy4.1retro.sfs

I used getnvidia with the following:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-304.123.run
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverRe ... 7033/en-us

[EDIT: I deleted the nvidia .pet files as they did not work correctly]

Possibly create an sfs file if that is your preference.
I like to use this script for that purpose (download link in first post):
pets2sfs [post] [post]

EDIT: Alas, after more testing, I am having difficulty. When 'getnvidia' compiled and installed the nvidia driver, direct rendering was working. When I tried installing 'nvidia-glx-304.123-k2.6.21.7.pet' on a fresh frugal install, it would not work. It complained about a missing dependency. More testing needed.
