Hi,

Not much has changed, this is an experimental release (seems to work) ... Anyway, it has some 2.02 features and can be found at :

http://www.my-plan.org/storage/puppyLinux/

The ISO for burning can be found in this directory

Also included is meanPuppy.tar.gz, a "pack" that builds this "Mean Puppy" if unpacked alongside the "Unleashed" install (as the patches in this version are so extensive I have included the version of "unleashed" used).

At a glance :

Extensive compression using UPX 2.01.
InkScape, GNumeric and XOrg had to go, Mozilla is replaced by Opera.
Euronews RealVideo is viewable through Opera, as well as the BBC News 24 TV link in gxXine TV thanks to a complete set of Real codecs.
Busybox VI replaced with VIM.
RXVT tweaks, background tweaks, etc.
Some test programs

Other changes :

Many of the packages referred to in the latest "Unleashed"
package list haven't been uploaded yet...

Init issues
===========

I had to update "boot/initrd-tree/sbin/init", the PUPSTATE
changes seem to be incomplete so that many of the root-fs
scripts need PUPSTATE but "init" doesn't create it.

Barry's blog documented the process so I added PUPSTATE creation.

I have added running of "makeinitrdgz.sh" to my build script
as it makes things a little more error-proof for me.

Shutdown issues
===============

The latest "rc.shutdown" gave me problems too - it would never
want to save the session, rather than debugging this one I just
patched it from the last puppy Mozilla "r2" ISO. 

TCL issues
==========

xft Tcl stuff ... This basically only works if a install of
the XOrg libraries is present. The missing .so is "libXss".
I got the one for xfree-4.3.0 and I complied it, I found that
although most TCL stuff worked iCal and SockSpy segfaulted.
I got hold of iCal 2.3.2, recompiled and had a look for more
dependencies (strings <file> | grep "\.so"), but I couldn't
get around the segfault when running in "mean" xfree-4.3.0.

The funny thing is that I can use the xfree-4.3.0 libXss as
long as I am running from a Puppy ISO with XOrg.

Anyway, I just reverted to tcl/tk 8.4 and recompiled iCal.
This also gives me a space advantage, so I'd like to stick
with TCL 8.4 if I can ... Everything seems to work now.

Icon for "Connect"
==================

The connect icon has moved, "globicons" still points to the
old file.

The MeanPuppy Wizard (http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=8662), will make an appearance at some point.

You sent me an email about this, I think. I accidentally erased it before reading
it -- my online webmail system doesn't have a trash folder so I couldn't get it
back.

Anyway, I can announce Mean Puppy on my News page. What version number
will I give it in the announcement? Mean Puppy 2.01r2?

Is this behaviour also the same in your Puppy 2.01 Opera version? I prefer the Opera browser but never had the patience (or, truth be told, the ability) to get media to playback in Opera.

If the behavior is different, will this new mean Puppy lead to a Opera version 2.02? Or is it "easy" to burn a bootable ISO from this? Thanks.

Long time fan of Opera. Long time user of mean-puppy.

I seem to missing something. In the past I burned mean-puppy to a business card CD with a nominal 50MG limit. When I try this with mean-puppy 2 (both versions) the business card gets spit out without any burn. Have tried this in XP using Roxio and, of course in Puppy using BurnISOusing CD.

Mean-Puppy burns just fine to 640MG CD and is sincerely cool!!!!

Simple question---

Does the new generation mean puppy fit on a business card CD of nominal 50 MB?

I am sorry, my post wasn't clear enough ... The ISO is also in the directory, I just included all the files required to build it as a courtesy to anyone wanting to build their own version.

See my response to Sage, however ... If you want to tweak the build it is very easy.

It works on the 50Mb CD's that I have, however, I confess that I did burn the final test CD from Nero under XP.

I'll try under Puppy.

Does Roxio have the ability to tell you the size of your CDR ?

Under nero I look at my ISO and it is 52Mb (5:57.33), my CDRs
are 52Mb (5:58.10), so my mean-puppy just about fits.

The current release of MeanPuppy contains some placeholder code
for the Wizard stuff to ensure I don;t run out of space in the
future, so the ISO can be easily shrunk by about 600k if needed.

Checked out my wallet CDs with Nero and they are 51Mb(5.48.01). Must be Canadian wallets are a little smaller

So all I need is a bit bigger wallet or a little trim on the ISO to make things fit.

In the MeanPuppy time, it's working nicely on it's own machine and the rest is a great "excercise for the student" moment or two.

Dumped GAIM, remastered, and the whole thing fits now in a Canadian Wallet.

Hi John

I just thought "WINE" and "Mean Puppy" combined would make a super small wonder. SLAX based "Kill Bill" that comes loaded with WINE is around 200 megs. In the case of Mean Puppy + WINE this would just be around 60 megs.

I had been using "Violetdream's" Wine 2.00_sfs, and now am using krevolutionist's Wine 0.9.17.tar.gz as an alien package installed in Puppy 2.01.

In Mean Puppy (the latest version) however, I am unable to use both the above WINE packages. When "winecfg" is typed in the console the following error appears:

I have another question too.

Is it possible to create a "(Mean) Shuttle Puppy" [MS Puppy] - I mean a Puppy that is specifically designed to carry Wine (like the Space Shuttle) on its back (sorry ... mouth)?

A small Puppy that just has the purpose of remaining the OS platform in which WINE can be run? A super small wonder, which may be less than 50 megs?

Both versions were throwing out the same problem on istallation. Mark's library file tamed both of them - with a single SHOT!

Now WINE 0.9.15 and 0.9.17 are available for Mean Puppy also.

I tried to install Gparted but some libs missing:

These dependencies required by gparted-0.2.4_STATIC_GTKMM package are missing:
File /usr/local/bin/gparted has these missing library files:
 libXau.so.6 libXdmcp.so.6

Would you kindly tell me where can I download'em.
