Colors in new Puppy Versions do SUCK! Subject description: Unreadable Text in Splash Messages |
|
Hi.
I've rarely seen anything more stupid than the information in newer Puppy systems presented in the so-called Splash Messages.
Who is the guy, that has "invented" splash messages for the users to be presented in white colored text on yellow or gray colored backgrounds?
Shoot him! Or even better: send him to the ISIS!
Really: this SUCKS, this SUCKS, this SUCKS, this SUCKS, this SUCKS, this SUCKS !!!

No need to be diplomatic, tell us how you really feel.
I'm currently trying out Slacko 5.9.3 non-PAE. I have to say, I was disappointed that someone had changed urxvt to white characters on a black background. That's the way it is in most of the latest Puppy derivatives. About the only combination I find harder to read is red characters on a blue background.

I don't think newer versions of Puppy are worse - I like 5.6+ better than any other Puppy.
While I dislike all kinds of popup messages, I can't say they're the reason why Puppy sucks. It's a minor annoyance, compared to stuff like PPM.
IMHO, this title slaps developers in their face.

Rerwin made a little thing that can help some of the way maybe.
If you make a blank file and call it
personal_settings_popup_disabled and throw it in the etc department, then all that stuff won't be appearing.
Not keen on any popups too, I just like it on the rocks. I'm sending you a virtual anger management pill RSH, open wide.

RSH is talking about colour choices and readability only.. and I have to say I agree on those points.
He's not questioning the use of popups at all, just the chosen colours.
Anyway, that's how I read his post.
But the aggressive title and writing style will solve little.
@ Flash: this is easily changed in /root/.Xdefaults. (hidden file).
Just change these colours to:
Code: | urxvt.foreground:#000000000000
urxvt.background:#ffffffffffff |

RSH as being an artist, sees everything with that look.
In my daily life, I feel beauty subordinated to functionality, if it's beauty, better but not the most important.
One thing that I most like about Puppy, are the way those (ugly ) pop ups are written. The colloquial way to explain is easy to understand, and is educative, too.
Saludos.

I had never thought about it but it makes a lot of sense.
But for terminals I like black on white best, just like good ol' paper. And even for popups, I like black on white, I find it more elegant.

Thanks, I knew there was a way to change the colors but it's been so long since I had to fiddle with it that I forgot how.

You can change the background color of Xdialog windows simply
with a configuration file as explained in their manual. That is what I do to
make a yellow background.

Flash, remind me to never show you a picture of the display for my XT box... it's green-on-black! (Look up "Monochrome Display Adapter" on Wiki if you want to learn about the technology driving the screen...)

Hi Bert
Thank you so much for the terminal
Color tip. My tired old eyes can now read the terminal a lot
easier.
Best Regards
John

I use a shade of black for background, which is supposed to be less stressful on the eye than pure black.
Here's my urxvt colors:
Code: | urxvt.foreground:Yellow
urxvt.background:#494949
urxvt.underlineColor:#ffff00000000 |

@RSH
The language may not have been diplomatic but it was certainly more effective than when I raised the issue here before you did. I hardly got a whisper.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=794716#794716
Check out my analysis and fix of Pmount opacity (applicable to PartView too) here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=796320#796320
Changing the COLOR_TEXT variable, and selecting a larger font solved that.
I haven't got around to changing the COLOR_USED='#006793'
COLOR_TOTAL='#444444'
