MP4 & flv files don't play on Windows apps (Solved)

#1 Post by megapix »

Video clip downloads play initially in GNONE player when online with Precise, but the saved files won't then play in Windows.

Any ideas please how to fix it, or work around this

Thanks

I think you mean Gnome Mplayer.

Can you describe you problem better?

Thanks Linus - This is the error msg

Windows Media Player error C00D11B1

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/c00d11b1

indows Media Player can't play the file.

Things to try:

Use Windows Update, or go to the sound device manufacturer's website to see if an updated driver is available.

Use Device Manager to check the status of your sound device.
To check the status of your sound device

If you don't have a sound device installed on your computer, install a sound device, and then try to play the file again. For details, go to your computer manufacturer's or sound device manufacturer's website.

If you're trying to play a file on the Internet, try again later. The server might be temporarily unavailable or there might be a network problem.

If you're trying to play an MP3 file that contains compressed ID3 headers, make a copy of the file, and then use a non-Microsoft ID3 tag-editing program to remove or reset the file's ID3 headers.

The ID3 header is a portion of the file that stores the song's album information (for example, the song name, artist name, album name, and genre). This information is sometimes called a tag. After you remove the ID3 headers, Windows Media Player should be able to play the MP3 file.

The way you put it in your op, it looks like Windows will play the file unless you play it with Gnome first. Is that correct? Or do you mean Windows won't play the file even if you haven't played it in Puppy first?

Why do you report this as a Puppy bug?

If your Media Player (version?) of your Windows (version?) can't play the file, then it probably doesn't support it. That's also what the error message says. For supported formats see File types supported by Windows Media Player . According to the list mp4 is only supported by the (newest) Media Player 12.
Flv isn't supported at all.

Workaround? Use a decent player. I never bothered to install the MS Media Player. Try VLC media player.

As mochimoppel said, installing VLC will fix your problem.

Otherwise on windows you will probably have to install the appropriate codecs to make WMP work with your video files.

I haven't played with windows video for a very long time, but I remember it was very important to be careful with codec packs, as they often had malware.

See how you go.

Thanks for advice

Sadly VLC didn't fix it - and according the error msg it can't!

" No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. "

This error problem happened from one day to the next.

If nobody else has had it then it may just be my usb OS and not a 'bug'. So I will reload Precise, see what happens and post result

That extension's an U-ndefined format. Short discussion..

How about a couple of links.. One for a video clip and one w/perhaps a sample.

You can upload here.

Because they sound broken, how about their names.. similar, as in part1, part2, etc..

It's been reported that SMPlayer can handle the format..

http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/en/info

found this works the best since xp.. havent tried it for win8 but I should. Perfer the ms player since the linux version drivers overhead my laptop. That is the only reason I kept it. otherwise its slow as a snail

undf means you are trying to play the videos from you tube downloaded to say /tmp when using the flash player...the codec info is deliberately hidden to prevent you doing this.

If you get a nice browser addon which gets you a 'proper' mp4 then it will play just fine...at least in VLC.... avoid windows media player if you can...it would fail anyway with undf movies.

Ps I do this all the time on windows using vlc 0.8.6 which is donkeys years old.

I use tubemate on my droid.
It gives many screensize and file format options while downloading.
Then I just transfer them to my machine.
Tubemate has never failed me yet.

Any way to recover this hidden codec info.
Or may be a way to try with some common codec infos, kind of mix n match style.
Is it possible or too much work.

Completely crazy! !

After reinstalling 5.7.1 on the USB now downloaded files play OK on Win 7

As I deleted the 'defective' files there's no way to find out what was behind the error messages.

For now all's well that ends well - until (if) it screws up again.

Thanks for all the advice.
