Change it manually, restart X and see if the key now works.
If it does say screeny, I would recommend to try it in a fresh install or boot with pfix=ram, and repeat 1-4, as something else appear to be messing up things

There is a package in quirky/pet_packages_quirky named cups-pdf-0.8-1.pet that looks like it.
Maybe.
But I can also see it in puppylinux/pet_packages-noarch/cups_pdf-0.8-1.pet.
There is also a puppylinux/pet_packages-noarch/cups_pdf-0.8-2.pet that actually has a fix by you!
Apparently TahrPup opted for 0.8-1...
i think tahrpup got this version from barrys quirky repo. tahrpup 6.0 uses ubuntu packages frozen at the tahrpup 5.8.3rc1 level (this was before tahrpup was pulled to woof) as i found builds using the very latest were performing worse for some reason. i had to do a lot of manual updating and somethings were inevitably missed.
if i had built straight forwardly with woof it would have grabbed the latest cups-pdf.

Regarding the Bootflash issue: It also appeared in Lupu 525 here and was fixed by downgrading some Syslinux components.

I don't know how it has been fixed since then.

i think you had a typo on

Code: Select all

cat /use/local/bin/defaultscreenshot
it must to be

Code: Select all

cat /us[b]r[/b]/local/bin/defaultscreenshot
the result of the command is:

exec screeny "$@"

so.. i will try it on a new fresh save to see if it work or not..

NOTE: i have installed the LXDE enviropment... it dosen't change anything?

Yes it does!
I do not know how your LXDE bindings are configured probably mtpant is hardcoded instead of defaultscreenshot.
Look for keybindings in some .xml file in /root/.config/openbox folder (I believe - not on LXDE currently)

Processor: Intel Celeron 1.8 ghz, cache 128k, bus 400 mhz

So it is a pretty slow machine as you can guess...

/etc/init.d/10alsa

issues=otherwise

Precise Puppy 5.7.1 with Kernel 3.2.48: OK
Precise Puppy 5.7.1 with Kernel 3.9.11: OK

tahrpup 6.0 with Kernel 3.4.103: OK
tahrpup 6.0 with Kernel 3.14.20: issues *

------

/etc/init.d/10alsa gives some time for sound detection to be successful
and then sets initial sound levels (otherwise it will start muted and that is
the case with Kernel 3.14.20)

It seems that Kernel 3.14.20 needs a little more time, because the sound card
is detected but retrovol shows muted sound in this slow machine (you can adjust levels
manually but that is not the point...).

So the waiting time must be increased, or you can create a script to make
sure that when a desktop is ready... the sound also is.

To avoid modifying /etc/init.d/10alsa , create /root/Startup/alsa
And paste this code:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
sh /etc/init.d/10alsa start
rm -f ${0}
If /etc/init.d/10alsa fails to set default sound levels at bootup, then it will happen
this time around hehe (most likely)...

Then the issues with muted sound at startup will be gone forever (most likely)...

Abiword 3.0.0 is buggy

#149 Post by Advnaser »

Abiword version 3.0.0 in Tahrpup 6.0 CE has an annoying bug. Sometimes when I click the save button, the program crashed with the error "could not save....". IMO, the best version of Abiword is 2.8.6.

Re: problem with Browse on new install

Slight disappointment though when I click Browse. At first it can't find the default Palemoon so I manually had to download Firefox from the desktop 'Quickpet'.

I also downloaded (well tried to!) Calibre from the Puppy Package Manager and whilst it is listed in the programs, clicking on it (single click) does not work. I had thought of unintalling Calibre and then re-installing it to see if that cured it but it's a project for next weekend.

Apart from the above, a very very nice little distro, well done!
hi dancingdog777,
palemoon may not be working because it needs a processor with sse2 support.
you're beter off grabbing calibre from their website.... i will probably add it to quickpet though at some point as it's a nice program.
I did use the same disc (non PAE) in a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop which runs Win 7 and Mint 17 normally last night and can report that Pale moon does work. It must have been the sse2 support thing after all.

Thanks for your help!

tint2 panel in tahr 6.0

#151 Post by rek769 »

I've just been using tahr for a few days now but I cannot seem to figure out how to fix this little annoyance...

After having installed fluxbox and tint2 in favor of JWM the only tray icons that show up in the tint2 panel are the firewall icon and the retrovol icon.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get all the standard tray icons to show up in the tint2 tray and/or a suggestion on how to change the color of the retrovol icon (which can't be seen in my case because it is black and I use a black background in tint2).

Thanks in advance.

hi rek769,

some puppy apps now start from .desktop files in /root/.config/autostart it would seem that tint2 doesn't like this for some reason.

you'll need to look in /usr/bin for freemapplet_tray, network_tray, powerapplet & parcellite then drag and drop them in /root/Startup and choose 'link' then 'relative' when prompted to create symlinks for them.

Thanks for help 666philb.

Your suggestion did the trick. Good to know that puppy is now starting to use .desktop files.

Any thoughts on where that retrovol icon might be?

As happens from time to time I find my own answer....

the retrovol icons are in /usr/share/retrovol/images

They are SVG files and as such can be edited in a text editor. Color names and color hex values can be changed to get the desired color icon.

Not a bug but what's the difference between the PAE and non PAE versions, can I use the non PAE version in a newer machine?

Basically the PAE version will give access to all of the memory if you have more than 4GB.

No PAE will only see up to about 4GB of memory. If you have more than 4GB it will not get used.

No PAE version should work on anything.

Some older computers sometimes have problems using the PAE version.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Superb answer, clear and precise, exactly what I needed. Very many thanks Bigpup.

Hope you'll all be pleased to know that today I will be installing Tahrpup on my main machine in place of Mint 13. Mint seems to have lost it's direction and fun.

Puppy is fun and has got serious, a worthy replacement.

Thanks for all your advise!

hi jlst,

this sound bug, is this only on the first boot or does it occur after creating a save?

and concerning the dvd bug, if you open .. menu>>>system>>>puppy event manager then 'desktop icons' tab then 'icon handler' tab and untick 'auto-play video dvd' and restart x. does the problem still occur?

Re: BootFlash USB installer issue

if I run BootFlash USB installer (via Menu > Settings > Puppy installer), it results that the whole (FAT32) partition disappears from the pendrive thus the installation fails.
Sometimes the corrupted pendrive cannot even be repartitioned / reformatted by GParted in Tahrpup 6.0 CE. Fortunately, GParted in Upup Precise 3.8.3.1 succeeds even in these cases. Then, tahrpup can be installed on the same pendrive using bootflash within Upup Precise 3.8.3.1.

I reproduced the behavior using different types of (new and used) pendrives on different types of machines. No exception.

The above resembles an old Ubuntu bug

Any idea?
