cups-1.4.8 : no «parallel» local printer connection?

#677 Post by charlie6 »

Hi 666philb,
[SOLVED] see below add
cups-1.4.8 on tahr-6.0.2 has no «parallel» local printer connection choice when adding a new printer; i know that these days printer use a usb connection.
Using a usb to parallel converter is reported as not working in some cases.

Is there another cups version supporting parallel printers taht works on tahr?

Thansk for any answer
Charlie

Then run your CUPS setup.
To make this permanent, add the line to the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local

gsoffice version

#678 Post by charlie6 »

Hi 666philb,
Thanks having featured Tahr-6.0.2 with gnumeric-1.10.17 ! :)
...went just to notice that goffice version is still 0.8.16. Seems to work well although.
Would goffice be updated to 0.8.17, wouldn't it?

Greetings, Charlie

Sorry to ask such a noob questions but where are the kernel sources kept now? I'm spinning my wheels in frustration and would like to compile my very old 304 Nvidia stuff for the latest and greatest thar 6.02 with the 3.17 kernals. And I will have some time to ponder why my SO took apart the connection to the TV cable box and smashed it in upside down bending and breaking the pins to this stupid DIN connector. At least the drive to the local Radio Shaft store to replace it with a less easily ruined HDMI cable.

On a side note. I've got to learn a better way to do a proper search. I seem to keep getting results that take me all over creation but never to the right place. Humm.. Maybe better would be to say I get results that appear to have nothing to do with my searches.

There is a thread that has a number of different ways to do puppy search but.... If I was looking for (Example) Puppy AND Linux AND Kernel AND source AND 6.0 AND Thar I find nothing. When I go in the other extreme I find endless results none of which seem to be connected SIGH.... I think I'm having a mental health day.

I wanted to send an update and thank you again for your work on thar.
I really like this distro and I am going to make this my regular. Thanks for doing all this and thanks for helping me out of my mental health day problems!

I got the old nvidia package for my prehistoric 7600 GT card compiled and working fine. Thanks for leading me to the source headers. I had some sound issues and I'm not sure what I did was right but I renamed alsa-base.conf to alsa-base.confXXX so it didn't take over the weirdness I had to do to alsa.conf I think thats what made it work but I was doing a couple things at once so that might not have been everything. *Its that stupid realtek 880 driver and the weird way the sound is connected on this old gateway.

I tried to kernel swap to 3.17.4 but I probably am doing it wrong. I tried to boot from a USB Thumb drive so I could copy the new vmlinz and zdrv_thar_6.0.sfs files *Overwriting the old ones. When I did this my system didn't load any drivers so no mouse, ethernet card, wifi etc. I noticed some boot error message about /lib/modules/3.17.14/modules.dep being a problem (Zero Bytes long) As an experiment I copied a working modules.dep file from a working raring 3.9.9.0 frugal. It did make it work (mice, ethernet etc) but I thought that was going to be a disaster so I went back to the 3.14

I've tried a couple programs (Not used extensively) but audacity loaded and works out of the box without any fiddling. I like alsa and alsamixergui (and terminal version) works fine. Dual monitors and Virtual screen works fine. All in all a very nifty neat-o system.

I don't know if stuff like this is of any help?

Well, getting Xfce running properly breaks some stuff in jwm. I did make a wm switcher for slacko so Xfce and jwm can co-exist, it should work with tahr as well. Control panel will have to be dropped and the stock puppy menu used or it will be a mess.

I'll have a look this week and see if I can get xfce running as an sfs addon, no promises though.

Forgot to ask if it's possible for you to make delta's from 6.0 to 6.0.1 and to 6.0.2 so people don't have to download the complete ISO's everytime.

fix to get preview working using gnumeric

#695 Post by charlie6 »

Hi,
on Tahr-6.02-PAE (might be others ...)
missing a symlink /usr/bin/evince-previewer pointing to /usr/bin/evince

just do in terminal

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/bin/evince /usr/bin/evince-previewer
This allows Gnumeric previewing to work.

Cheers, Charlie :)
