I thought I would mention a CUPS problem I ran into that took a bit of head-scratching to solve....at least for this newbie.
Recently CUPS stopped working for me when trying to print to a remote printer. I wasn't aware of any changes I had made, and, to make things even more interesting, while I couldn't print documents I could STILL print a test page, and lpr worked. The error logfile wasn't very helpful, either.
I got suspicious when I saw that my /tmp file was apparently full, even when I had deleted just about everything in it. Thinking that CUPS was bombing out because it couldn't create a temporary print file (queue???), I started investigating.
The 'fuser' utility came in very handy & showed that there was a copy of 'vobcopy' using /tmp, which survived multiple reboots. I'd tried to rip a DVD but gave up on my old & wimpy laptop. Vobcopy didn't shut down properly and kept locking /tmp so CUPS couldn't use it!

Thanks for the 'heads up' about how the tmp filled up and squeezed out CUPS.
Every little clue helps.
