This is all getting a bit complex I am afraid but as a matter of interest I frugal installed Tahrpup 6.0.6 this afternoon and it worked perfectly using 1600*900 resolution straight from the go. This was on the same computer with the same monitor on a different partition on the Hard disc.Maybe if I updated the 6.0.5 it may sort the problem. I think as you say that the kill page killed the desired res.
I can transfer my stuff to the 6.0.6 but for some strange reason it wont install Opera developer. I sometimes wonder why I stay with it but any thing is better than Windows but it would be better if I knew what I was doing after using Linux for the last 15 years or so.My excuse is basically my geriatric status.
Regards Dennis.
Further to the above I updated to 6.0.6 (changed VMlinuz initrd.gz puppy_tahr64_6.0.6.sfs and zdrv_tahr64_6.0.6.sfs all worked well but still no access to 1600*900 res and wont install Opera-developer.
What Fun.

I burned the iso to a DVD, the save file is on the hard drive:

What Fun.
This indicates the old save is corrupted, messed up, not correct, etc.....

The easy fix.
I know you have a good backup of the save, when it was working correctly, that can easily replace the bad one! :D :!:

The hard fix.
Try to figure out what is messed up in the save.
Here we go

In Rox file manager
Navigate to the save file/folder.
Left click on it to open it.
Inside the save is etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Delete the xorg.conf file.
Reboot.

Any help??????

Explain will not install Opera-developer?
Details????
You do what?
You see what?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

Thanks again. Right I have sorted the Opera problem on the new 6.0.6 on the different partition. As to the original problem with the resolution I have tried deleting X11/xorg.conf and rebooting after which the mouse was dead. Replaced the xorg.conf with a backup and same story.rebooted in safe mode which produced the dead mouse again. rebooted in ram mode and got a untouched version with no personal content.went back to the original boot with the original save file and got the bad resolution but everything else OK.
Dont know where to go next
THanks again Regards Dennis.

tahrpup 64 can provide Gramps

#845 Post by Pelo »

Happy to feed back that tahrpup 64 can provide Gramps to people whose hobby is genealogy. They are some in the forum intra muros, but many outside.

It is the first Puppy able to do it since Slacko 5.5 and Precise 5.7.1 as far as i know.
Python, libs missing, there was always something to stop the process
Sure i have old puppies at home. I would not have been stopped in my genealogical researches.
But some positive feed-back is to be done, when passengers are satisfied.
What would be a 64 bits OS without applications to run ? A supersonic as Concorde for which USA would be prohibited to land. :!: or

Re: Tahrpup's formatting of Ext4 is OK

#846 Post by WoodLark »

mikeslr wrote:In my previous post I suggested that running gparted on Puppies and formatting a partition as Ext4 would create a 64-bit Linux Ext4 partition from which Puppies couldn't boot. jd7654 corrected me. My comment was based on the problem Woodlark reported, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 862#964862. Woodlark: "I am trying to do a frugal install of Tahrpup 6.0.5 to a Dell Precision 690. I reformatted the partitions (ext4) and wiped the previous boot record (there are no other OS's). I used the Universal Installer and the Grub4Dos wizard (chose all defaults)." From which I assumed Woodlark had done that running Tarhpup from a DVD or USB-Key. Woodlark never responded to my question as to whether the partition had previously been formatted using a different Linux; and I would have assumed that reformatting it and removing the mbr under Tahrpup would have eliminated any problem which could have been caused by a different Linux's formatting.

jd7654 appears to be correct. To find out if I could duplicate the problem Woodlark's experienced, I did the following:

Booted into LinuxMint Sara (64-bit) and formatted a USB-Key to Linux Ext4. Rebooted into Tahrpup 6.0.5. Used its gparted to reformat the Key to Ext4. Copied the following from tahrpup 6.0.5 onto the USB-Key: initrd.gz, vmlinuz, puppy_tahr_6.0.5.sfs and zdrv_tahr_6.0.5.sfs. Installed grub4dos to the USB-Key allowing it to create a menu.lst there.

Rebooted the computer with the key plugged in; USB-ports having boot priority. Tahrpup booted to desktop without incident.

I'm not sure why Woodlark had a problem -- what he didn't do, or didn't do correctly. Note, I didn't think of installing Linux Mint's grub to the Key until I wrote this, and I hadn't "wiped the previous boot record", other than that which might have occurred by gparted's reformatting and grub4dos's over-riding of any prior boot record. But Tahrpup seems to be able to format partitions as Ext4 and use them as its boot partition.

mikesLr
I apologize for not responding earlier. The partition had previously been formatted with a different linux (Mint if I remember correctly). I never did get puppy installed on it. However, I have two identical Precisions, and I did successfully install Tahrpup64 on the second one after using dd to delete the existing MBR and reformatting as EXT4 using GParted from the Tahrpup64 DVD. I probably will end up doing the same with the first Precision.

One interesting comment, I tried several distributions, and Puppy is the only one capable of doing a reboot on that system. All others would simply reach the end of their shutdown sequence and hang. I would then have to power off/on the machine.

So I tried installing tahrpup 6.0.6 (32bit version) using the F2FS installer on slaco 6.9.9.9 (64 bit version).

Sounds silly? Maybe but it seemed to mostly work but during boot it wasn't able to read
"sda2 /tahr_6.0.6/puppy_tahr_6.0.6.sfs"

I was able to mount sda2 using the following command:

Code: Select all

mkdir /mnt/sda2
mount -t n2fs /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2
However, if I try to resume the init script by typing

Code: Select all

/init
then the directory is no longer mounted. I understand there are probably more sensible ways to create a bootable usb but I want to understand what is going on here.

P.S. Here are lines 38 to 41 from extlinux.cfg

Code: Select all

LABEL tahr
MENU LABEL tahr 6.0.6
KERNEL /tahr_6.0.6/vmlinuz
APPEND initrd=/tahr_6.0.6/initrd.gz pmedia=usbhd pdrv=25fe20f5-15e0-40ad-a96f-ead4892a0a72 psubdir=/tahr_6.0.6 psavemark=2

about drive icons (tahrpup64 6.0.6)

#848 Post by thinkpadfreak »

I noticed a drive icon for the extended partition is shown on the desktop of tahr64 606.
I also noticed a drive icon for an optical drive is shown even when it is empty. (The optical drive is an external dvd multi recorder)

I wonder if these behaviors are intended, though they are far from a big problem.

USB 3

#849 Post by James186282 »

Spent the morning reading complaints from people using all sorts of Distros that can't get USB3 to work. And it seems to be version after version so.... The Puppy guys always seem to be the ones who figure these things out so I thought I would ask again if anyone has an idea why the xHCI driver doesn't work. Some time back I got it to semi work but not enough to be useful. Right now its just dead.

I compiled (and got working) an NVIDIA driver for my relics so if there is something of that level thats worth trying I would be glad to actually try to do something. But if the latest xHCI driver is part of Tahrpup64 6.0.5 I don't really want to waste time reinventing the wheel.

*Is there a special PCI card that is known to work?

BTW I've got a couple of machines but the one right now that I really use the most is a dual core AMD Athlon X2 The USB card is a PCI via tech VL80x

I may just try unplugging the card and putting it into an older single core AMD 64 bit machine but it would be most helpful for this to work on the machine I really use.

Please ignore my bug report on USB 3. The particular board I was having problems with has never worked with linux. Its very hard to fix something that has never worked properly. I'm seriously annoyed.

LibreOffice 6.4.3 is not redrawing JWM windows

#857 Post by Viet »

FYI:

Something changed in libreoffice 6.4.3 compared to previous versions. This new version is no longer usable in puppy tahr64 6.0.6 CE. I have not tried other versions of puppy to see if there are similar problems.

When maximizing any window of the program the window is not redrawn, making the software unusable. Previous versions of LO never presented these type of problems. The software was obtained via get libreoffice.

I assume the USB drives are plugged in.

Have you tried a reboot or a restart graphical server?

Check Puppy Event Manager->Rox Icons
Everything needed selected?
If yes.
Try selecting refresh/realign existing icons
Press OK button.

Also check Puppy Event Manager->Activate
Every selection there needs to be checked.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

strange behavior of puppies

#860 Post by martinus »

Thanks Viet,Thanks Fichy [5.4.2020Tharantw]
Since last february you notice strange things in your computer. So do I. I spent a lot of time, to find out the reasons. It concerns all my computers (three 9 to12 jears old, one new) All with full installed puppies on different partitions: (Lupo528, Slacko, Querky Beaver, Bionicpup, Xenialpup, Mint,..).
Many years ago these "play mobiles" were stable. Nothing had changed by itself. Changes only by own manipulations.
(Thanks Barry Kauler).

Since last february I had trouble with all computers:
-Trouble while starting: code trouble> cernel panic (attachment)
-shut off, black screen
-bug: none of the power off-keys working

Sometimes to repair with "restart graphical server" or restart. New installation from CD does not remove all bugs.

In former times I could chose texts in all Partitions of the same computer with LibreOffice directly, which is now prohibited. Save of text can be difficult

Newer Puppies come with LibreOffice6..., which is no good idea. The combination Puppy-LibreOffice5... is better

One of my computers is absolutely buggy: With Grub4dos I can chose Mint or differnt Puppies. Mint starts normal.
After I choose one of the Puppies there is always breakdown with Kernel panic,
smilar to the attached screen photo.

What can I do?

Is the februar 20 trouble only in windowsfree Puppy computers?

Best wishes

Martinus
