Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#1 Post by ETP »

Overview:(V1) - Released 17th Dec

This Pup attempts to mirror a Google Chromebook.
The concept is similar to Blue Pup in that it is intended to be simple & familiar in order to attract new users to PUPPY with all its benefits.
It does however have a dual personality in that it can just be used in the cloud centric fashion of a Chromebook or as a normal Pup. Pretty much anything can be installed via PPM & QUICKPET.
EDIT: 05 Nov 2015
Please note that this Pup is not intended to run on a real Chromebook.
It is meant to transform any other PC or laptop so that it looks like and behaves in a similar manner to a real Chromebook.
**** V2 of Chromebook Pup issued 20th Dec can be found futher down this page. ****

Slideshow:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/ ... sp=sharing

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=94954

actually, chronic fatigue, sleeps way too much

just taken her out for a spin, forgot how lovely ob was - had a play with videostream, works great for one file then I have to restart the browser to play another, it selects a new file ok but then shows the old film just played

videostream is a great concept, I have a few Tb's of films and shows and casting to the tv is fantastic, shame that the android app does not allow you to select different media

the google search from apps bar is awesome!!

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#6 Post by ETP »

Main Changes:(V2) Released 20th Dec

Revised slideshow:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/ ... sp=sharing

Rather than a hybrid ISO, V2 is available as a compressed image (267 MB) with the intended target being an 8GB or larger USB2 or USB3 stick.

The image contains a small fat32 partition hosting the kernel with the main sfs on the faster second f2fs partition. The brand new and novel feature is that also on the second partition is a ready made 512 MB savefile.

The intention of this arrangement is to simplify set up so that anyone new to Puppy Linux is not immediately bothered with having to setup such a file and are spared having to decide what format to use and where to place it.

A side benefit of this arrangement is that it has allowed pupsaveconfig to be pre-configured to “always ask

Just for once its nice for Puppy to be ahead of Google.

(Available only in Chrome within Chromebook Pup since 17th Dec!)

Shouldn't your thread title mention Intel chip, since there are Chromebooks
with the arm processor?

Chromebook Pup appears to offer OOTB boot device options

#10 Post by gcmartin »

Hello @ETP. Was about to jump into ChromePUP when I noticed V2 availability.

In review, I notice
  1. V1 is an ISO allowing Live use.
  2. V2 appears as a USB/HDD image running as a FULL install with session capability.
Questions
  • Is this an accurate view?
  • And, is there any package differences between V1 to V2 beyond the boot device intents? (I am curious if I would get the same functionality no matter which version I would use at this stage in time?)
Looking forward to this, as, I intend to test this on my HP Touch Laptop.

Hi gc,

Your view is accurate. There is no change to the included packages or functionality other than V2 is simpler to setup and quicker to boot up and shutdown.

V2 is if you like, a cross between an ISO and a full install. Both V1 & V2 run entirely in RAM once loaded but V2 gains the speed advantage of a full install running off f2fs.

In contrast to a full install however V2 retains the option to save or not save at the end of the session. This makes it an ideal test bed.

I installed the xz image to a USB drive (Windows method) and booted a Dell ~2011 desktop with an NVIDIA quadro video card and external monitor. All went well, except that the first boot didn't pick up the mouse (connected through a KVM switch). Second boot fond the mouse ok. Video/audio/ethernet ok. Samba client OK. I like this Pup, very simple to setup and use, yet a full pup with goodies. Fresh, elegant and slick, 10/10. Thanks!

Installed successfully to usb stick - booted to working desktop on my desktop pc with Nvidia graphics.

A few comments:

Had to copy rt2780.bin wifi firmware manually to /lib/firmware before wifi could be used

The Save button was hidden behind the sda1 drive icon on the desktop

You would get better Chrome sandboxing with a later kernel:
Sandbox Status

SUID Sandbox No
PID namespaces No
Network namespaces No
Seccomp-BPF sandbox Yes
Yama LSM enforcing No
You are not adequately sandboxed!
Cheers

Me too after I had booted to an external monitor, decreased monitor resolution and restarted X. Nvidia graphics card too.

@ peebee & step,

Thanks for your feedback. The hidden "save" icon is entirely my fault as I failed to consider resolutions less than my own and left it placed about one inch above the sda icon.
At resolutions less than 1920x1080 it would get squished down and finish up beneath the first drive icon. I should have placed it one inch below the QuickSetup icon. At least thanks to you both we now know where to find it. (If missing drag first drive icon aside to reveal it and then move it.)

Sandboxing was deliberately sacrificed as when running as root it was the only way to get "Ok Google" and Videostream working. There is a warning about Security in the OP.

Chromebook Pup

I wanted to post a quick note of appreciation for your chromebook Puppy iso's.

I tried out your chromebook_pup_v1.iso and was amazed
at the wonderful blend of Chromebook with Puppy Linux
that you crafted.

(I had previously spent a few hours sampling a real Samsung Chromebook,
so I had some idea of how Chromebooks act.)

I tried out your chromebook_pup_v1.iso on my old IBM Thinkpad R52
laptop with no hard disk but with a tiny SanDisk Cruzer Fit 8 GB USB Flash drive.
(The Cruzer Fit Flash drive only projects about 1/8 inch
out of the side of my Thinkpad R52.)

I had a little problem getting my built-in Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
to work, but it finally did!

I did just a few quick tests with the Chrome browser and
installed a FBreader pet and its "fix" script and they worked fine.

Thank you again.

Well done,we miss Puppies like that, nowadays !

SFS OBprecise 131MB to 211MB
I am retired far from my box ADSL, and i only use wireless with dongle or not. Chromebook well booted but only eth ethernet offered.
The zdrive was not enough provided with kernel modules.
To-morrow i shall check that :
"It is based on forum member vicmz’s OpenBox Precise built by him with Woof-CE 0.3 and the 3.9.11 PAE kernel. That in turn was based on Precise 5.7.1. "

Our technicians of the forum work since their garage, their attic, their cellar sometimes, but they are leached with the ADSL on their desktop computer.

Standard obprecise see both wireless networks (wlan0 plus wlan1 dongle CSL)
Zdrive chromebook miss something. Modules and firmware under 'lib', Module under 'etc' are needed at boot.
Necessary done, i can surf the web now.
And Use this Puppy and its menu.
Adjust settings for installing a new Puppy is not my cup of tea.
Chromebook is to get easy life :) to brand new users from Windows, as you say.
About laptop and surfing, it's quite an evidence for me that these computers are to move inside house, and outside.

Wlan0 outside became quickly out of connexion. That is the reason why i bought a CSL dongle and installed the realtek RTL8192CU.
I can make my portable really portable wlan1 connected (Frisbee)
Language & country availability:
Korean, Portuguese (Brazil)
Russian ,
Spanish (Mexico and Spain)

Furthermore, ethernet connexion still remains impossible in many villages in France, but in mexico, peru, argentina, asian countries too , Tumbuctu, Dakar, algiers, and a lot more.. And they don't speak a word of english, excepted if they are in a commonwealth country.
 Merci de populariser Puppy

When I look a name "Chromebook Pup", I had a thought same as don570:
don570 wrote:Shouldn't your thread title mention Intel chip, since there are Chromebooks

I feel that this name produces the misunderstanding of the installation PC.
(x86 PC or Chrome OS machine(Chromebook etc...))
In addition, a thing using "Chromebook" which is a trademark of Google has a problem.

Can you reexamine the public name?
I think "Chromixium OS" to be a good example.
