Chromebook Pup V2

#31 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

1. Multiple desktops:
Setting that up is a two stage process. In image-1.png follow it through from
left to right. Change the number of desktops from 1 to 3 and tick the box at the top to
"show a notification when switching desktops" box.

The second step is shown in image-2.png. Click on the panel applets tab and use the add button
to select "Desktop Number / Workspace Name". Then use the up arrow to move it up to the place indicated.

The above will give the desktop number as in the shot below. Image-3 shows one method of moving between
desktops. Another is to hold down your Shift + Alt keys then use your right and left arrow keys to move
between them.
The simplest method however is just to click on the "desktop 1/2/3" text on the taskbar to cycle through them.

2. Different Wallpaper backgrounds on each desktop:
Tricky but should be possible. It will require a pet and I will need to know the full exact names of the wallpapers
that you want on each desktop.

The 3 images can be found here:

Thanx ETP 4 your Reply, I Really Hoped that it wouldn't be too much trouble 2 do this, on 1 hand what yoU've done is Great in Achieving the ChromeBook Look & Feel ( The Comfy Old Slippers that Fit! ), But on the Other Hand I Do Need My Own Wallpaper image that I can Switch 2.

Can I Not just Simply ReName My Background image?

Hi Max,

For the purpose of testing I will include 3 wallpapers in the pet but they will be named:

desktop1.jpg
desktop2.jpg
desktop3.jpg

Once you are satisfied that the switching is working as expected the intention is that you substitute
3 wallpapers of your own choice giving them the same names. Simply overwrite the 3 that the pet will
install in /usr/share/backgrounds.

Hi Max,

Assuming that you now have desktop 1 showing on your task bar:

1. Install the pet (per_desktop_wallpaper-MK1.pet) which you will find in the same location as the 3 images.

2. Restart X

3. Test and if happy click on the save icon. If not shut down without saving.

That's Great Thanx ETP, it Works Mostly, eXcept that I Don't get OpenBox in the Menu & there wasn't any save button 2 clic', they're just Details!

Still I'm Surprised that this Feature isn't a Std Puppy Feature, But Thanx 2 Your Skills & Generous Time contribution, Now it's an Option.

Cheers ETP

Question ETP, might / should this Work in Other Puppies / Desktops? eg. Compiz, XFCE, LXDE, eNLightenment, etc

Truth is I'm Tempted 2 eXperimenting w/ Compiz on ChromeBook Pup, altho I'm Mindful that OpenBox isn't Compositing, so could be a HeadAche, But I Never did figure out Howto make Different Wallpaper Backgrounds on Different Desktops happen w/ Compiz...

Of Course the Other Consideration is Resource OverHead on Certain Legacy Hardware, But I just Love Showing Off what Linux Can Do on Hardware that Windows could Never do!

Chromebook Pup

#37 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

As it stands the pet would not work on other Pups as it contains a version of wmctrl which suits
Chromebook Pup. A revised pet with that removed should work on other pups which either already
contain wmctrl or have it available to them via PPM/QPM. (Most do)

Compiz with its special effects is resource hungry and provides only 10 minutes of amusement before
the general performance penalty it results in begins to annoy. Possibly O/K for someone with an i7 and a high end graphics card who values bling above performance.

The Puppy ethos is small and fast even on old kit. I would suggest Linux Mint for anyone wanting to
try out compiz.

Please let me know the outcome if you ever decide to try the V2 USB version of this Pup with your Toshiba Satellite Pro.

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#40 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

A traditional full install with this particular Pup (V2) is neither possible nor desireable. A manual transfer/copy to HDD/SSD
is IMHO, a much better option. The basic idea is described in this post:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 231#763231

The advantage is that the bulk of the Pup loads more quickly from the faster media. Saves and shutdowns
are also faster. In contrast to a full install, the Pup continues to run entirely in RAM whilst still
retaining the ability to save or not at the end of the session which is not possible with a full install.

The first requirement is that you possess a built USB stick which works on the hardware in question.

There are then a number of options, so to best advise you I will need to know what is presently on the hard disc
together with the number and format of all existing partitions plus free space available on each.

The screen-shot shows the layout of the MSDOS 2 partition stick (fat32/f2fs) for possible later reference.

Thanx ETP 4 Responding, Actually there isn't any 1 configuration, since the Plan is 2 install it Locally on a Variety of ( ReFurbished ) Laptops & Desktops, so that in mind I Need the Best Vanilla Process, Also I've Yet 2 Remaster it as I Need 2 Do...

it's assumed that there'll be a Minimum 40GB HDD ( Total ), Minimum 512 MB RAMemory & 1GHz CPU, so Considering those Spex & it's possible age it may not Boot from USB, so I'll Need 2 Remaster Both V1 & V2.

BTW I've installed V1 on a Dell Latitude C610, 1.2GHz Pentium 3 w/ 512MB RAMemory, Unfortunately because the Main Battery is Dead it Needs 2 be Plugged in2 the AC, But I have Done All the OB-Precise Updates Via Eth0 & installed the Programs I want, But Chrome Won't start, so I'm Guessing that there's a Hardware Limitation, Just Too Old!?

Perhaps I'm a little Unrealistic about How Much otherwise ( ie. Physically ) Working Hardware I can Divert from the Landfill. Please Comment.

Hi Max,

This Pup is specialised in that it is as released, intended to emulate a Chromebook.
To that end OOTB,it includes Google Chrome stable 39.0.2171.95 – pepper flash 16.0.0.235.
That must not be upgraded as later versions became problematic and do not contain the vital
features such as the desktop "search facility" and working "OK Google"
Loss of those features would negate the Pup's primary purpose.
Later versions of Chrome require more modern Pups. The included version of Chrome should work
OOTB even on old hardware.

If I had the task of installing a Pup on old refurbished laptops/desktops I would probably
install one of the current 32-bit "official" Pups.

But ETP w/ All Due Respect I Really Like Your ChromeBook Pup, so I'll take My Chances w/ your Puplet, it's Not 2 say that I Actually like the Real ChromeBook McCoy, 2 the Contrary ( They're Budget Quality & Features No Optical Dr, etc ), rather it's the Familiarity Factor that I'm Banking on.

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#44 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

Puppy is all about experimentation. If you are game and want everything on the hard disc rather than booting
from the stick with a modified syslinux.cfg you could try the following. I stress that I have not validated
this approach but cannot see why it should not work.

Instead of targeting a USB stick with the V2 extracted/decompressed image, target the hard disc sda

The code to do so is as follows: (sda must not be mounted)

Code: Select all

# xz --decompress --stdout chromebook_pup_v2.img.xz > /dev/sda
# sync
(Only issue the sync command when the 1st command has finished)

Everything on the hard disc will be lost and you should finish up with 2 partitions - sda1 and sda2

Mount sda1 and change /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg as follows:

Original OOTB:

Code: Select all

# Boot Chromebook Pup V2 ETP 18th Dec 2014
default /vmlinuz initrd=/initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash psavemark=2

Modified version:

Code: Select all

# Boot Chromebook Pup V2 ETP 18th Dec 2014
# default /vmlinuz initrd=/initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash psavemark=2 # Original single active line
default /vmlinuz initrd=/initrd.gz pmedia=atahd pupsfs=sda2:/obprecise_14.07.26.sfs pdev1=sda2 # Revised active line
If the above works it should better suit your intended purpose.
The 2 partitions will only take up about 4GB of the hard disc and the remainder should show in gparted as unformated.
A third partition may be created in that free space in a Linux format of your choice.

Hi Max,

Urxvt will do. See below assuming your chromebook_pup_v2.img.xz file is in the Downloads folder.

To copy the command line including the deliberate spaces highlight it with your mouse (Do not add extra spaces at the start or end)

Paste into the Urxvt terminal by clicking your mouse scroll wheel.

Check and double check again that it is an exact match before pressing enter.

The second command can just be typed in once the first completes (20-30 minutes)

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

Hi Max,

Open a window on the directory that contains the chromebook_pup_v2.img.xz file.

Press your ` key to open up a terminal.

In the window that opens type ls then press enter. (That lists all the files which should include the above)

If you can see the file listed you can then copy and paste the first command highlighted in blue in the last screen-shot.

Triple check it before pressing enter. The cursor will flash for 20- 30 minutes whilst the image is written to the HD.

You can then issue the sync command when the prompt appears again.

Good News & Bad News ETP
The installation Worked, altho there were sum Anxious moments, Mainly a GParted Bug that turned out 2 be a Red Herring & sda2 didn't appear until I ReBooted

But on the other side of the Ledger the Wireless isn't happening, this is on 3 identical Toshiba Tecra M5's, w/ intel Centrino Duos, 2 GHz CPUs, 1 or 2 GB RAMemory, 60 or 80 GB HDD, Same Fawlt on All w/ SNS as in the Attached Screen Captures, of course I've followed the instructions, Retried & Rebooted, & Tried w/ Frisbee & the Network Wizard. ( Hopefully My eXtremely Ltd CLi is Helpful )

I've installed your per_desktop_wallpaper, that Works Great Thanx again, So far I've been using Eth0 to Set this Laptop up, installed the Programs I Want on it Once I get on top of the Wireless issue I Need 2 Create a Vanilla ReMaster.

But Let's Count This eXperimentation as PROGRESS!

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

Hi Max,

That is welcome news. I have uploaded a pet to the same location as previously which hopefully will
sort out your Intel iwl 3945 missing firmware issue. The Intel firmware is in the zdrv.sfs file but I have extracted it
and created a pet to simplify matters.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

Install the pet then shutdown making shure that you save the session.

Remove the ethernet lead then power up again and see if it gives you wireless.
