Hi Max,

Urxvt will do. See below assuming your chromebook_pup_v2.img.xz file is in the Downloads folder.

To copy the command line including the deliberate spaces highlight it with your mouse (Do not add extra spaces at the start or end)

Paste into the Urxvt terminal by clicking your mouse scroll wheel.

Check and double check again that it is an exact match before pressing enter.

The second command can just be typed in once the first completes (20-30 minutes)

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#48 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

Open a window on the directory that contains the chromebook_pup_v2.img.xz file.

Press your ` key to open up a terminal.

In the window that opens type ls then press enter. (That lists all the files which should include the above)

If you can see the file listed you can then copy and paste the first command highlighted in blue in the last screen-shot.

Triple check it before pressing enter. The cursor will flash for 20- 30 minutes whilst the image is written to the HD.

You can then issue the sync command when the prompt appears again.

Good News & Bad News ETP
The installation Worked, altho there were sum Anxious moments, Mainly a GParted Bug that turned out 2 be a Red Herring & sda2 didn't appear until I ReBooted

But on the other side of the Ledger the Wireless isn't happening, this is on 3 identical Toshiba Tecra M5's, w/ intel Centrino Duos, 2 GHz CPUs, 1 or 2 GB RAMemory, 60 or 80 GB HDD, Same Fawlt on All w/ SNS as in the Attached Screen Captures, of course I've followed the instructions, Retried & Rebooted, & Tried w/ Frisbee & the Network Wizard. ( Hopefully My eXtremely Ltd CLi is Helpful )

I've installed your per_desktop_wallpaper, that Works Great Thanx again, So far I've been using Eth0 to Set this Laptop up, installed the Programs I Want on it Once I get on top of the Wireless issue I Need 2 Create a Vanilla ReMaster.

But Let's Count This eXperimentation as PROGRESS!

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#50 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

That is welcome news. I have uploaded a pet to the same location as previously which hopefully will
sort out your Intel iwl 3945 missing firmware issue. The Intel firmware is in the zdrv.sfs file but I have extracted it
and created a pet to simplify matters.

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing

Install the pet then shutdown making shure that you save the session.

Remove the ethernet lead then power up again and see if it gives you wireless.

Chromebook Pup V2 Released 20th Dec 2014

#52 Post by ETP »

Hi Max,

Can I assume that wireless is now working?

Chromebook was not built from Blue Pup but there are some similarities in that they are both issued
as images. Neither is Chromebook V1 (Hybrid ISO) or V2 (img file) normal in Puppy terms.
You can forget remastering as that is intended only for normal standard Puppy ISOs which do not
possess the features that Chromebook Pup has.

Once you are happy with the build on one hard disc you need to use the CD or USB stick version of Clonezilla Live to
image/backup the working hard disc and then to write that backup/image to another hard disc.
In effect you clone the build you have.

http://clonezilla.org/

http://clonezilla.org/liveusb.php

http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php#make

You will need a USB drive or stick to back up to. A 16GB stick should suffice as there is very little
data and only used blocks are imaged and compressed.
Clonezilla will warn you if that is insufficient.

One thing I would suggest is that you increase the size of the save file which is only 512MB OOTB.
Use the Utility/Resize personal-storage-file menu option to add 1024MB.

G'day there again ETP, Sorry in Me eXCitement of Me Last Post that I wasn't Clear about the Success of Working Wireless.

As it stands, I Think I've got a Mostly Working Build ( eXcepting GCompris Not starting from the Menu, I haven't yet tried Starting it via Command Line, ( I've Done a Dependency Check & that's All Good ), But I'm in the Process of a 2nd Attempt @ Cloning w/ Clonezilla, after the Previous Effort didn't work, this time I'll see if "sync" Helps? ) Maybe My Version of Clonezilla is too Old? ( about 5 years ), This Clonezilla seems rather Slow, Maybe dd or Pudd will be Faster, I Need 2 Do More Testing!

Update 2nd Attempt was in Vain... Ke*nel Panic, Not Syncing

I Did Remember 2 Edit & Add the 3rd Line to the syslinux.cfg File, Altho I'm Unsure if that is Appropriate in this Cloning Process as Opposed 2 Copying / Transferring that yoU Previously Mentioned?

Hi Max,

I do recommend using the latest version of Clonezilla rather than dd or Pudd (A Gui for dd) as it
will give you compression. I have therefore uploaded clonezilla-live-2.5.0-25-amd64.iso plus the
Windows app LinuxLive USB Creator 2.9.4.exe should you wish to place the ISO on a USB stick rather
than burn the ISO.

Ideally an external USB drive should be used for saving the complete hard disc image to and then restoring from to
another hard disc.
Both the backup and the restore must be done using Clonezilla live.

I am guessing from your post that you are doing builds on more than one of the laptops before deciding which
one to clone. A kernel panic is generally caused by an incorrect syslinux.cfg entry. If the first build is
working copy over the good syslinux.cfg from that.

If you clone a working build over to another hard disc it will be an exact copy with no need to edit anything
on the second machine. I am assuming that your 3 identical laptops contain hard discs that are identical in size.

Thanx ETP 4 Uploading Clonezilla, it's Running from Me USB, But B4 I Do Clone Me Virtually Working Modified KromeBook Pup. I'd Better Fix this GCompris Crash... it Begins 2 start from the Fun Menu, But then Crashes, the Dependency Checker doesn't eXpose Anything missing, So this is the Output from the Console as Attached...

Also so far it's still Running from Me USB Flash Dr, Until I get this GCompris Problem solved.

BTW I think I've run into a Bug, in that the Puppy Package Manager & Dependency Checker Report that TuxMath & TuxType need kmod, But when I install it, it Breaks ( ie. I Lose ) Me Sound & Networks Both Wireless & Eth0 ( & I Dunno Wot eLse ), Yet Both TuxMath & TuxType seem 2 Work Fine without kmod?!

Looks like I'm a Crash Test Dummy!

While I'm @ it ETP, Do yoU have any other Recommendations of Free Educational Software Appropriate 4 Primary School aged Kids? Please

STOP Press ETP, Looks like I'm Digging Meself Deeper, while Attempting 2 Fix a writetype ( A Childrens Educational Program ) Dependencies sip-api-8.1 & kmod, the internet search suggesting the solution was installing python-sip_4.13.2-1_amd64.deb, But now it seems I've Broken Chrome & it either Crashes or just displays Aw Snap! I haven't installed kmod either 4 Reasons mentioned in the Previous Post... Calling WriteType again from Console says IOError: invalid Python installation:... ?

Hi Max,

Some general points:

1. Any package you install must be obtained via PPM within the Pup that you are using (Chromebook Pup in this case) and be installed
via PPM together with all its dependencies using PPM. Any package obtained from another source is unlikely to work.

2. Even doing that correctly is no guarantee of success in every case as the packages are built to be compatible with
Ubuntu rather than Puppy which is very different in its basic structure.

3. Kmod is in every Pup which makes me think that some of the packages were not obtained via PPM in this Pup. The 3 "must have"
packages are available in PPM. (see attached screenies)

4. You have mentioned installing python-sip_4.13.2-1_amd64.deb ..... That will break it as Chromebook Pup is a 32-bit Pup.

Possible way forward:

Stop being a crash test dummy and simply install the latest Ubuntu on the hard discs if the laptops have at least 2GB of memory.
The packages you require are all available in their software center. It contains multiple games and educational software.
Sorry, but I am not familiar with stuff for primary school aged kids so cannot make any specific recommendations.

https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/games/

http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/writetype

5. You can if you wish, still run your modified version of CB Pup if at boot time, you have the stick plugged in and at the top of your boot order.
Boot without it plugged in and you will launch Ubuntu.

Lesson Learned ETP Guru ( = Teacher, Respectfully :-) ), re Not installing from alternative sources, But I Did install All of those Programs ( TuxMath, TuxType, GCompris, ChildsPlay & WriteType ) via PPM ( Clicking on the eXamine Dependencies Button ) & likewise kmod from the PPM, which Broke Me Sound & Network interfaces, But I am Frustrated that According 2 Your 2nd General Point I may have 2 Give Up on ChildsPlay, wRiteType & GCompris Working w/ Your CB Pup that I rather Prefer Over Both Ubuntu & ChromeBook, All because of that Cursed Common IOError: invalid Python installation:... Problem! as per My Previously Attached ScreenShots

Thanx again ETP, But I still Wish there is a Solution...?

Hi Max,

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. One last idea/attempt.

Use PPM to install the following. Start with the bottom item and install it plus all deps.

Use PPM to install seperately anything on the list that it does not pull in.

python2.7_2.7.3|Interactive high-level object-oriented language version 2.7
python2.7-minimal_2.7.3|Minimal subset of the Python language version 2.7
python-cairo_1.8.8|Python bindings for the Cairo vector graphics library
python-gobject-2_2.28.6|deprecated static Python bindings for the GObject library
python-gtk2_2.24.0-3|Python bindings for the GTK+ widget set
python-minimal_2.7.3|minimal subset of the Python language default version

If still no joy go for Ubuntu.

If yoU Think it's Worth eXploring & yoU're Up 4 it, I'm a Great Testes... Please, Wot Do yoU Reckon? Coz I Really don't know, altho I Certainly Wish I Did! & of Course I'm Lacking Your Skills 2 Do it!

Hi Max,

You have to have something that works before you can create a pet or sfs from it.
I therefore stand by my Ubuntu recommendation.

Hi Pelo,

I regret that I have no intention of updating Obedient Pup. (Far too much work involved)
If you want voice control of any recent Pup
please use the latest version (V4) of my Voice Control Pet issued on 10th Sept 2017.

With Chromebook Pup V2 you will need V3 of the Voice Control Pet.

O/K Google is still working fine as of today, just do not attempt to update Chrome as you will lose O/K Google and all the other Chromebook features.
It can be found here:

Nice, really nice puppy, lot of time to spend with. if get final success in voice commands, i will have done progress. Step by step.
I really ope many people join to me to make Vocal Puppies not sinking under top level.. Puppy Linux is good for humans, poor and rich, deaf or dumb, American or Asian, including disabled persons, old and young.
For Linux learners, but for Engish learners too. If voices offered on the OS are not a dream, they allow French puppils to get used to English, Australian, or Texan accents. Lot of seniors come on the Mediterranean sea to take advantage of sunny days. That will help.
