installing on serial console hardware now more difficult

#1 Post by stanosborne »

Installing 1.0.3 on was a bit more difficult to achieve than 0.9.7.
It is definately neither automatic nor something for a UNIX/Linux novice.

When I installed puppy 0.9.7 on a 1GB flash device for use with
embedded hardware that has only ttyS0 and no graphics interface,
PS/2 or USB (keyboard/mouse), it went fairly smoothly using
variations of the embedded hardware with USB and a graphics
added on.

With puppy 1.0.3 copied onto a 1GB flash IDE disk I am finding
the following to be true.

1) assumes PS2 keyboard & mouse
2) assumes graphics display
3) assumes you want to autologin root and run X11

To get the flash IDE disk working, I must first put the drive in a
system with PS2 devices. Then boot puppy from cdrom (option 2)
using it to customize the system on the flash IDE device. Then boot
from flash IDE and test. If customization does not work right, the
process must be repeated. (hint: to save changes, study what
/usr/sbin/save2image is coded to do, then adapt for your needs.)

In short, older 'standard' hardware must be used to customize
puppy 1.0.3 on the flash IDE drive, before you can use puppy 1.0.3
with newer hardware such as USB keyboard/mouse, or an
embedded application that has only a serial port and neither
PS2 nor USB devices.

After a little work, 1.0.3 is booting up on the unusuall hardware
configuration.

Does anyone else find it a little odd that old hardware must be
used to get new sofware installed and running on new hardware?

Please advise on what I can do, besides reporting my experiences,
to help puppy evolve so it does an even better job of achieving
its mission statement.
