Look at my inxi readout in my post above yours. It is the 2 gig ram stick I used to have in my eeepc 701SD. Because I put my 1gig stick back in it when I sold it. With Windows of course.

It is 533hz. All I can say is that it worked with no problemo. You can try 667,

As far as distro. In my inxi readout. You'll notice I am running Latest Carolina_Vangaurd with XFCE.

But. I see nothing wrong with trying out

This is the stable version of slack57-ff27e. All updates/patches to bash, wget, and openssl are finished and running smooth. NOTE that only the i915/945 chipsets are supported, limiting usage to 700, 900, and some 100x series of the EEE netbook.
I guess read the thread and decide for yourself. When I had mine.
It ran puppeee and looked like this.

I kept it updated by hand myself, my way. Just the applications though. Not the kernel as the kernel working was just fine.

Generally, as long as the pinout and voltages are compatible, it will clock down if the bus isn't that fast.

ok Gurus, this lill machine is now running fine with compiz-pup. And compiz is working great. This means all of our problems were now solved with your benign and timely assistance.

My friend now ordered 64gb sd card and upgrade RAM@ 667MHz. I will update after a few days.

final verdict on Asus eee-pc-701 SD

Hi Gurus!

We successfully upgraded the machine. Details:

1. RAM upgraded to 2GB. Details: PC5300 667MHz SODIMM http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019W1LNS/ [just in case anyone wants to upgrade]

2. We are now using a class 10 32gb SD card [90MB/sec] as HDD (cost USD 16.00). Why? For us, the PCIe mini SATA HDD is very expensive. So, we just leave this cheaper SD card in its card reader slot permanently.

Now the machine is working fine
Distro: Compizpup - all graphics, bells and whistles work great!. We have chosen 'frugal install' and will trim this distro down as per our requirements.
Office: Kingsoft - works great.
Email: Thunderbird. [my friend has 5 accounts, all configured well].

The machine is expected to last another 4 or 5 years now. Thanks to all of you for valuable suggestions.

Congrats. If I may... don't forget to get a spare battery, and a wall-wart, and a spare CMOS battery... your machine is already 6-7 years old.

Cool! That's one of the things I like about lightweight distributions like Puppy and Lubuntu (and others,) they keep perfectly good and usable systems in use for a little while longer. :)

Also, if you would, please mark this thread as "SOLVED" by editing the subject line of your initial post. Thanks!

Regards...
