New MeanPuppy 2.02 and matching Wine 0.9.18

Hi,

It was uploaded yesterday to :

http://www.my-plan.org/storage/puppyLinux/

Unfortunately I got all this done just before I was due to catch a flight, so it was a little rushed.

So far 2.02 has proved to be a nice platform although harder to slim down to the right size.

This release cotains a couple of hidden features I am hoping to document in the next couple of days, hopefully people will like it.

Cheers
JohnM

PS : As of yesterday I am no longer based in the US (FYI)

welcome to Europe, John :-)

If you come to Hamburg by chance, send me a message, then I may show you the city :)

I am in the UK this week, and move on to Brussels on Sunday, I'll be there for a few weeks so it might fun to visit Hamburg and have a beer ;-)

After Brussels I'll be in France for a few days, then Barcelona for a couple of weeks ... And then China for a month. After that I might go down to OZ for a couple of weeks before I return to Europe for good.

Wine 0.9.18

John,

Downloaded and burned your ISO, and it automatically upgraded my pup_save.3fs from version 2.00 to 2.02 - great! The only hiccup I stumbled upon is that it short circuited my IceWM menu - minor inconvenience as I reinstalled via DotPup and things were back to normal.. FYI - I still can't shut down or reboot the system via IceWM. To do that I must be at the command prompt - not a major issue for me though!

I then used ROX filer to install the Wine 0.9.18 module. Although the software installed, it won't run the Windows executable. Do I need to install as user other than root? Would be convenient to have an ISO edition with Wine pre-installed in the future.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hope you're enjoying your European/Asian tour!

wine 0.9.18 crashes on my system (Puppy 2.01 and 2.02), tried 2 different versions, also the one from John.

0.9.17 works fine.

Wine 0.9.17 errors

Installed the Wine 0.9.17 Dotpup. Attached is a screen capture of the errors generated when attempting to execute a Windows executable. I've had similar errors in the past. I'm able to successfully install this app using another distro, so I know it's not specific to the Windows program

I'm going to try an experiment...ignore my upgraded pup_save.3fs and do a clean install with 2.02 and Wine 0.9.17 only to see if that remedies to problem. I can always customize later.

ah yes, in Murgas wine these files are provided, but I think he made a packaging-error.
His files should be in
/puppyWine-0.9.18/usr/...
but they are in
/usr/...
so Pupget cannot install them, or did John add his own installer?

However, you only need this dotpup in addition for Johns Puppy:

Wine Error - Solved!

Mark,

That was the solution - thank you! I applied that last Dotpup you posted and it solved the problem. Wine works fantastic now on Puppy and I did not have to start from the beginning. The execution speed of the Windows program running in Wine is nothing short of dramatic when you run it under Puppy.

I really think that Puppy could fill a void for all the Win95/98/ME users Microsoft is dropping support for this summer. Projections are anywhere between 35 to 50 million. Most of these users are probably running using older hardware. Can you imagine that many Puppy users worldwide?

Attached is a snapshot of my default destktop, and another with Puppy impersonating a Mac (Puppintosh!). I've got VNC server running so when I deploy the image I can remotely access the workstations.

Thanks again for your help Mark!

Puppy & Wine

Mark,

One more snapshot that should bring you some satisfaction. This is Netterm, a Windows terminal emulation program running under Wine 0.9.17. I've had problems running this using other distros, but it works superbly under Puppy. :D

hey great :-)
Thanks for the nice screenshots :P

But I would suggest to host them at http://imageshack.us/ , that saves webspace in the forum, and you get smaller thumbnails, what is important as we have many dialup-users.
I usually scale them down to max. 640 pixel width, and upload them on my webspace.

Sorry Mark...I'll remove them to save space per your instructions. At least you had a glimpse of the final outcome.

OK...images removed.

Hope your enjoying Europe John.

I have just moved to Vienna from England. It's very nice here. Loads of beer wine, beautiful women, computers and music! Let me know if you want to come over!

Cheers
