So Far the Wine Taste Okay

#16 Post by rc2o2w »

BigPup,

Thank you for the Menu Link....Works fine and with many more selections .... It even took my couple icons and included them in its list. I since deleted them....Smiles...

On the buggerhand, sometimes the Wine Menu Bar sticks to the desktop and the only way I can rid it is to Kill it...by selecting the left X and then Kill. Also the 'Wine Iexplore' does not seem to respond well. I clicked on it and Wine Internet Explorer opens and :

""
Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.
Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please.

Hint: https://www.winehq.org/
""

is what came back. And clicking on the "https://www.winehq.org/" doesn't help either....Nor if I just put in a arbitrary URL like www.google.com...

Not like I need the browser in Wine....But It sort of remind me of the "File -> Create Directory" that returns "Not Yet Developed". Because they are there lead you to want to try them ....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Version,

Thank you for pointing out the ">>" things. I saw them at first and figured it your way of bulleting your list of downloads....Laughs...

But...yes I clicked them now the see the mirror sites and download list and I also found the legend at the very top that explains the > and # signs.....

I will also take a look at your idea to symlink things ....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems...I am missing signs and running lights as I navigate these streets and I really appreciate everyone's patience...

Wine is not perfect. It does still have problems.

Very actively being developed.

They are basically reverse engineering a replacement operating system, working like Windows, but using Linux.

Be happy for what does work and keep checking the Wine topic for updates.

There was a time when most of this stuff did not work.

The Wine Explorer
I entered www.google.com and it worked for me.

It is a very basic internet browser.
I think it is basically there so you can go to the Winehg.org web site while in Wine.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected

I am a robotic encyclopedia. I don't have to eat or sleep. Or laugh.

Or, some think, shut up.

A lot was "cut and paste" of previously written. Just trying to get everything in one place.
rc2o2w wrote: But, I question the 'portable wine' that you suggest is exactly the same Wine Engine as the "wine-1.6.2-486_v2.2.pet" that I installed? But with the added features that as an SFS will not fill up my Pup Save File and that it also has all the Menus and Winetricks once installed?
IIRC, both the wine-1.6.2.pet and the wine-portable-1.6.2-2-p4.tar.gz were the work of version2013. I can't think of any reason why he would have changed a "winning procedure", except as perhaps necessary to modify it to make it portable. My experience using both the pet and the portable is that they function exactly the same, with the exception of having to substitute wine.sh for wine in the latter if I wanted to write BASH scripts.
Registration --see below-- automatically creates the following menu listings:
On System, Wine Windows Program Loader. This will load any program you installed to wine's false C:Drive.
On Utility, Wine clock, config, console, and control panel.
On Fun, wine mine.

"Installation" of the portable is straight forward and only take a couple of minutes primarily because it has to download wine.
Installation:
1. Download a portable wine tgz.
2. Left-Click it. Answer the dialog. It will download wine and create a folder. You can move the folder anywhere.
3. Right-click the folder, Select Register Wine portable on Menu.

Although I used wine-portable-1.6.2-2-p4, that was primarily because it included Winetricks, while the other versions available at the time of my download didn't. Since then, shinobar has provided on his thread a newer version, Wine_MyPortable_1.7.27.tar.gz by Akkie2, a member of the Japanese Team. It apparently includes winetricks as well as Claunch, GPad and some other applications pre-installed. I wouldn't hesitate trying it if I had any reason to rebuilt my setup. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 297#755297

Browsers - Setting my glass on the Platter

#19 Post by rc2o2w »

Thank you....MikesLr....

You've got my laughs....you are now dubbed the "sleep Lacking robot" "encyclopedia", of course...smiles...

And to answer your last post...I will get to your suggestions....but at the moment I wish to turn my attention to other areas on the computer....but on the subject of Wine I see an entry for Internet Explorer and when I click on it it goes no where... I get a

""Bad Request"" and more verbage...

The Wine browser has no Internet Tools/Preferences option. And I do not see it
listed in Add/Remove Programs on the menu entry and so I wonder how to rid it so that maybe I can install an official version of IE....

Okay,

Maybe I do want Internet Explorer but a more recent Version because there are those websites that I have come across that seem to work best/only with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Personally I prefer Firefox and use it 99% of the time while I am hacking on my Windows 7 machine. But again there are those websites that only accept Microsoft's Internet Explorer...

So my questions are :

1. Is there a clean way to delete The Wine Internet Explorer??? I do not see it
listed under Wine Add/Remove Programs.
2. And further... Can an official version of Microsoft Internet Explorer be
installed under Wine??

On a plus note I have been able to install a Windows31/95/98 app and use it in cursory form and is all I really expect from the Wine right now and so I want to turn my attention to other areas particularly with the hardware...for a bit... But I will come back for more Wine...

More wine anyone?

#20 Post by mikeslr »

Hi again rc2o2w,

The initial record resulting from the search of my databases was "Wine is fine, but liquor is quicker." Pursuing this line of research did not reveal anything pertinent to your inquiry.

Perhaps more probative was the advice that a little wine may make your happy, while a lot can be deleterious to your health.

Except when I attempted to run Dragon Naturally Speaking [some posts on the Wine Forum suggested IE was necessary to register DNS, which turned out not to be true] I've never used it. And while some security experts may know better, my thinking is that using Internet Explorer may result in some exposure to windows malware, My reasoning:
A: "Wine doesn't support most Windows security constructs, and instead relies on the underlying operating system for security. Unless you run Wine as root, for instance, it's hard for malicious software in Wine to modify files belonging to other users. But Wine doesn't protect you against malware you run yourself.
End of story.
Except... there are a few weak things you can do to slightly protect yourself..." http://wiki.winehq.org/SecuringWine

B. Puppies run as root.
C. The version of Internet Explorer often included with Wine is IE6. Without simultaneously running anti-malware, I wouldn't recommend running any version of IE under the "real" Windows. I think internet Explorer is now at 11. Upgrades have been in part to keep up with competitors, make things pretty, but mostly to patch discovered security holes.

That said, and trying to recall what I did to get IE running when, as mentioned above, I thought I needed it, try either of the following or both in this order:
Configure wine -- I've a vague recollection that configuring wine on one occasion resulted int IE being downloaded. But my memory may be playing tricks.

Open a terminal and type the following command:
If installed version of wine:
wine winetricks ie8
if using portable wine:
wine.sh winetricks ie8

It should dlownload and install Wine's version of Ie8. 6 and 7 are also available.
See http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks for more info regarding the use of winetricks. The command "wine(.sh) winetricks list-all" lists every application which can be downloaded merely by adding its name to the command.
There used to be a nice winetricks GUI. But for Puppy, and other distros not using KDE, zenity was required and AFAIK zenity is broken in all.
The above link says you can download the latest version of winetricks and make it executable. I've never gotten winetricks to run that way. Which is why I stuck with version2013's 1.6.2.
See https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... ion&iId=25 regarding the essentially useless attempts to get the "real" IE to function.
But note, as I said above, IE isn't really needed: certainly not needed for surfing, and any Linux browser can download programs except from microsoft, whose programs probably won't run under Wine.

J don't know of any way to entirely get rid of IE. My Portable's Utilities>Wine Control Panel>Add/Remove doesn't see it, although System>Wine Window's Program Loader does. You can browse to and delete desktop files --which will only eliminate their being displayed on the Menu-- or the Drive_C/Program Files/Internet Explorer folder. The latter won't remove registry entries.

The Pup I'm currently running uses portable. I'll continue this post after booting into Lupu which, I think, still uses the installed version.

Now posting from Lupu. It does have a registry editor, but it's Wine-1.4.

Deeply buried in my memory banks is a note that sometimes wine's gecko did not install. I know it's needed for wine's versions of firefox/opera. Maybe its also needed for wine's ie.

Try typing in a terminal:
wine(,sh) winetricks list-all

and decide on which of the 3 versions of gecko you want. It should also show if any are already installed.
Try installing it along with Ie. you can do both with one command:

wine(,sh) winetricks gecko ie8.

Edit: After parking my CPU at idle awhile [an airport servicing NYC* :P ], I wondered if winetricks had some for removing stuff. Googling indicated it doesn't. But, the following link was generated regarding how to remove IE from the Registry. http://engineering.zowers.net/2008/12/h ... -6-on.html. As Puppy runs as root, you can probably edit wine's registry in any text editor. Geany has search capabilities for quickly locating text. Combined with deleting the IE folder in wine Drive_C, and any IE.desktop, that should completely get rid of IE.
Of course, making guesses about what to delete form the Registry can also get rid of the utility of other programs.
