Problem with AMD video card driver

#1 Post by Truddy90 »

I am trying to use multiple monitors. When I installed the amd fglrx 14.9 no PAE from the quickpet, it installed but when I tried to run aticonfig -- initial it said no supported adapters detected.

I then tried the website.

The first script I run and it gets my 32-bit architecture, but then the next line is:

"X Server: unable to detect"

Then it stops running.

The other to files I found on the website do nothing. Does this mean I am out of luck? Do I need to uninstall the first driver for the others to do anything?

Thank you for any help.

System Details:

Tahrpup 6.0.2
No pae
ATI Radeon 9200

YES remove the amd fglrx 14.9 no PAE you did install by using the Puppy Package Manager uninstall and start over.

I will try to give you some useful information, but I do not use ATI graphics.

From the message you got the amd fglrx 14.9 no PAE driver does not support your hardware.

What you need to do is go to the ATI/AMD web site and do a search for the driver they recommend.

You will need the following to install it.

The ATI/AMD driver package from ATI/AMD

From Quickpet->Useful pets->
SFS devx
Kernel src

Now do the ATI driver package install as they tell you in the release notes for the driver package.

I assume you have a desktop computer.
When I looked it up the ATI web site pointed me to this driver for your Radeon 9200.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

I am trying to use multiple monitors.
Have you tried to use menu->System->Multiple Monitors Settings?

Thank you for your reply.

I am using a full install and do not know how to uninstall the first drivers I installed.

When I go to Multiple monitors it detects both of them and I can turn them off and on. Is there an option for extended desktop?

To uninstall a program package you installed.

Run Puppy Package Manager
Click on the uninstall button.
Click on the package in the uninstall list.
Click on remove package.
Is there an option for extended desktop?
Someone with dual monitors will have to come along and answer this question.

Did you ever try to get the ATI driver package from ATI web site?

I have tried all the drivers from the files from the website.
the "ATI Driver Installer" does this:
The first script I run and it gets my 32-bit architecture, but then the next line is:

"X Server: unable to detect"

Then it stops running.

I tried installing the next 2 files together and independently.

The both have no menu entry after installation. I try and run "aticonfig --initial" as that is what the default one from quickpet says to do, and it does nothing, it doesn't even recognize there is not a compatible device like the one from quickpet does.

I copied and pasted this from ati's website as I am not sure if it is relevant to my issue:

The display driver requires POSIX shared memory to be enabled on the system.
Kernel Source package is no longer required if Kernel Header package is installed.

These two files have to be installed first from Quickpet.

From Quickpet->Useful pets->
SFS devx
Kernel src

The ATI driver package needs them to do the install.

You should only need to download one ATI driver package and install it. The one they say supports your Radeon 9200.

Agaain follow the install directions in the driver package release notes.
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.28.8.html

Try this driver package.

The top one is all you should need. (ati driver installer)

Could be an issue.

I messed up this comment so here is what I meant to say:

I download both of those to get Virtualbox working so unless I need a different version of those, they should be working on my system.

That file from their website still give me the "X Server: unable to detect" message and stops running.

The model number is PVC-RS620g

It is a sony vaio.

Thanks again for your attention in this matter.

hi Truddy90,

i believe the only AMD driver that builds on modern kernels is the latest catalyst 14 driver and even then you need to patch it.

the legacy driver won't build and the driver you need is ancient!! ... if you can find a post where someone has success building on kernel 3.14 i'll give it a go, but a quick google by me didn't turn up anything.

BTW the open source radeon driver in kernel 3.14 and above far out performs the amd driver, for me anyway. although not sure if it supports your card? ... type glxgears in a terminal, do you see spinning cogs? if so, you have 3d acceleration with the open source driver

When I typed glxgears it comes back as a bad request. Let me know anything else I should do. Just trying to get dual monitors worked with extended desktop.

Thanks again.

I am using 2 monitors with an older ati card:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sat 14 Mar 2015 on tahrpup 6.0.2 Linux 3.14.20 i686
0.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV530 [Radeon X1600 PRO]
oem: ATI ATOMBIOS
product: RV530 01.00

X Server: Xorg Driver: radeon
X.Org version: 1.15.1
dimensions: 3208x900 pixels (848x238 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 10.1.3

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Core 0: @2800 1: @2800 MHz

I have arandr from PPM installed to support 2 monitors.

If you have the proprietary ati driver installed you can open the terminal and enter "amdcccle" no quotes to load the catalyst control center and set up 2 monitors using that.

Hope this helps.

try booting without a savefile 'pfix=ram' and see if glxgears is working then

Problem with AMD video card driver

#14 Post by Billtoo »

Here's a new install on a pc with a newer ati card:

root# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: tahrpup, version 6.0.2

Chip description:
VGA compatible controller:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Redwood PRO [Radeon HD 5550/5570/5630/6510/6610/7570]

Requested by /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Resolution (widthxheight, in pixels): 1920x1080
Depth (bits, or planes): 24
Modules requested to be loaded: dbe

Probing Xorg startup log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log):
Driver loaded (and currently in use): ati
Loaded modules: dbe dri2 exa extmod fb glx kbd mouse radeon ramdac

Actual rendering on monitor:
Resolution: 3840x1080 pixels (1013x285 millimeters)
Depth: 24 planes

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
root#

root# glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.317 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.004 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.008 FPS
root#

I installed arandr from PPM and ran it, positioned the monitors and
saved it as 2monitors,then copied the 2monitors.sh from /root/.screenlayout
to /root/startup

You need to click on the eye in rox filer to show hidden directories.

Both report video and glxgears worked when booting from the live cd. How do I install arandr and ppm?

type the name into the find box in the PPM

before you do though, it might be worth trying menu>>system>>multiple monitor settings to see if that works for you

edit: working for me :)
