Savefile encryption - how secure/reliable?

#1 Post by Cirrael »

Well, I'm trying to secure my files with encryption, and I've searched the forum for some clues. But I still have some questions remaining. If anyone could help me, I would be forever in debt.

What I think is simple enough for me is just to have an encrypted puppy savefile and store in it all the files I want encrypted.

But how secure is the puppy encryption?

And about the savefile itself, how prone to corruption is it? And is there a way of not echoing the typed password when I mount it in the system? And about a matching strings checker when the puppy ask me to choose a password while creating the savefile?

My main OS is the Precise 5.7.1 one, concerning my questions, is it time to choose some more updated version of Puppy already?

Truecrypt has been declared almost secure after an audit and I'm still using it. Download last version from:

Truecrypt development has been resumed by the open source veracrypt project:

If I may ask the OP... Are you asking if the save-file at shutdown is secure? I feel reasonably sure the 'heavy encryption' option when 1st making a save file is good. The 'light encryption' option is not too good, but will fend off casual attacks. Of course a determined attack will eventually crack anything.

Hello, watchdog and 8Geee. Thank you very much for your replies. I don't think that someone would spend any time trying to peek at my encrypted files. So the puppy savefile will certainly fit all my needs. There is a added convenience because the system just mount the file and I can use it like a encrypted folder/partition (no need for extra typing).
