DebianDog - Jessie (21 June 2017)
Thanks for the interest, William!
I've been working a lot on it..... let's say that it's going in the right direction
Using now playlists in format same as simple-gtk-radio to offer choice of many radio stations to add/play.
I've tried before the way of using .m3u files converted by DoMyFile but they seem to be working with xhippo using .xplist but not all as .m3u with mplayer.
I think it's because of some have e.g: http://path/to/*.m3u inside a .m3u file, then it doesn't play by mplayer.
Anyway I now made already the switch to using playlists like "playlist.Jazz" as format same as simple-gtk-radio and it seems to work well, just now solving some small other problems and I will share new Dog-Radio soon.
PS, Good luck with Mint-pup, I see now where you and Toni are busy with, looks promising!

Could it be that there's a bug in DebianDog-Jessie-openbox_xfce-3.16.0-4-686-pae.iso ? I downloaded it x2 and both resulted in the same error (for all options in menu). I then downloaded the jwm version and it runs without any problems.
The error that continually occurs in the openbox-xfce version occurs after the autologin, when the xorg server is starting. The xorg error messages are something like: no screen is found, the server is not found/failed. Then is falls to the prompt. A few times, when the prompt appeared, I looked for a xorg.conf file in ./etc/X11/, but did not find one. Could you check this out? I'd like to install the openbox version of DebianDog on my USB SSD.

Hi, TJK.
I guess you have the problem described as fix 1 here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 414#847904
and here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 024#850024
It will be fixed in next iso version. Till then just remove the file from console as suggested in the fix:
and type startx

Yes, it was reported as problem with NVidia but it might be a problem with some 'other than Intel' cards also, please tell us if you could fix with: rm -f /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.confTJK wrote:Thanks Toni. I'll give that a try. I had skimmed over the reported problem, but it referred to NVidia as being part of the issue, and therefore, thought that it wouldn't apply to my situation because I have a Radeon card (with AMD chipset) -- and the deleted file is "intel".
Fred
Openbox-Xfce DebianDog is up a running. Deleting 20-intel.conf worked for my Radeon video card.
At first glance I'm loving DebianDog. The theming and default apps are exactly what I like. ... and, most importantly it appears to work well with Python2.7 (it seemed like all other Puppy distros had issues) So far there are no problems with Debian installations and dependencies.
I've run a lot of other Puppy distros -- this one might take some getting used to: E.G. so far haven't found a setting to tweak my touchpad, etc -- but I'll install an app easily if needed -- that's the beauty of this distro. Thanks.

Ether, the examples posted in post below illustrate the general process of getting wireless working for me:

I expect the driver Toni recommends is the one you should fetch and install.

All is going well with the modification of DebianDog... except I have a few questions:
1) I thought that allocating 1gb of room for my installation would be more then enough room, but I"m already using 793mb!! (The default was 100mb) There's no resizer that I can find. How do I go about increasing the size... As it is now, I don't have enough room to install LibreOffice.
2) Synaptics touchpad doesn't work with my Acer Aspire laptop touchpad. Do you know of the alternative to ST? (There is one that works, but I don't remember the name). I'm getting really tired of doing a two finger scroll.
3) I failed in my attempt to install a display managers. I tried LightDM and SLIM. Is it possible to add a DM to DDJ? (And is there an easy way to do it, or a thread that you can refer me to)

Hi TJK
I notice a "Resize Save File" utility in DebianDog-openbox-wheezy, so I imagine the same is in Jessie jwm or openbox versions (try Menu -> Utilities if not in Accessories).
As for login managers, Toni includes xdm in jwm versions, which is tiny the way Toni has packaged it, and works well in practice. I think they had problems with the ones you remember but can't remember the details. Actually, I think it would be great if Fred included xdm in his openbox version too, but he hasn't wanted to so far... ;-)

Unlike Puppy, DD saves all the old install files. Delete them with "apt-get clean" "apt-get autoremove" will clean up a stuff too.TJK wrote:All is going well with the modification of DebianDog... except I have a few questions:

Code: Select all
From the apt-get man page:
clean: clean clears out the local repository of retrieved package files. It removes everything but the lock file from /var/cache/apt/archives/ and /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/. When APT is used as a dselect(1) method, clean is run automatically. Those who do not use dselect will likely want to run apt-get clean from time to time to free up disk space.
autoclean: Like clean, autoclean clears out the local repository of retrieved package files. The difference is that it only removes package files that can no longer be downloaded, and are largely useless. This allows a cache to be maintained over a long period without it growing out of control. The configuration option APT::Clean-Installed will prevent installed packages from being erased if it is set to off.
autoremove: is used to remove packages that were automatically installed to satisfy dependencies for some package and that are no more needed.
Thank you for that link. I have a question about iwconfig.mcewanw wrote:Ether, the examples posted in post below illustrate the general process of getting wireless working for me:

You are right, it was hiding (off-screen) in my veeery long Accessories list. However... I ran this utility, increased to 4gb, rebooted -- but I keep getting warnings that there's only 30mb left (and conky shows only 1gb). Then I opened a filemanager and checked the size of changes.dat, it was 4gb. So, I just repeated the process again... increased it to 6gb this time... rebooted... same problem. Is there a problem increasing it to this large? Or is there something else keeping it from updating?mcewanw wrote:I notice a "Resize Save File" utility in DebianDog-openbox-wheezy, so I imagine the same is in Jessie jwm or openbox versions (try Menu -> Utilities if not in Accessories).

Actually I have been cleaning with apt-get, I've turned off caching in FF (deleted history, cookies, etc), I've made sure there aren't /tmp files.dancytron wrote:Unlike Puppy, DD saves all the old install files. Delete them with "apt-get clean" "apt-get autoremove" will clean up a stuff too.
I've checked the folder sizes and /usr/lib and /usr/share are taking up about 500mb, the rest is split evenly between /opt, /lib, and /var. The folder /root (or home) doesn't even factor into the total size used. It appears that python2.7 w/ dev files takes up a lot of space... (and I've notice a lot of python3 files installed as dependent files).

Hi, Tim.
Try booting with no-persistent and run in terminal:
If you see errors use the same command again till all is fixed.
Then reboot and see if the size is correct. The program uses simple resize2fs command and should work well with unmounted save file.
And as Dan suggested use "apt-get clean" often to remove the downloaded debs in /var/cache/apt/archives

It is recommended to resize the safe file unmounted (not in use booting with no persistent code).TJK wrote:You are right, it was hiding (off-screen) in my veeery long Accessories list. However... Try first typing in terminal tapbutton. If it works link /opt/bin/tapbutton in ~/Startup to autostart it on boot. If it doesn't work see if you can find some solution here:TJK wrote:2) Synaptics touchpad doesn't work with my Acer Aspire laptop touchpad. Do you know of the alternative to ST? Don't use slim. It doesn't work well. LightDM and xdm should work. Write if you have a problem to make DM work and I will test to see what could be the problem.3) I failed in my attempt to install a display managers. I tried LightDM and SLIM. Hi Ether,Ether wrote: Your post said I should see eth1, but it shows wlan0 instead. Is that normal?
.
My post was a bit inaccurate. iwconfig showing wlan0 that is fine - on the system I was using before it was indicating eth1, but I can't remember why - I've only recently been working with wireless issues (because I had problems getting my own wireless to work) so nothing I say can be taken as final (I just summarise what I found and what worked for me). My current system just shows the wifi interface as wlan0 too.
Cheers, William

By the way, Ether,
Once you have the appropriate wireless driver found and installed, it is actually pretty easy to connect manually (though frisbee works well for me anyway). If you are interested I gave a couple of links that show the commands used to connect manually here:
